To This Call: Since writing
last I have visited many places in

childhood daye. I stayed one night
with the family of ray aunt, who
wan mv first teacher and learned me
the A B ("a. I went to the old
Hickory Flat grave yard and saw
graven of grand father and grand
mother. The following inscriptions
were on the respective tombstones,
viz:
“Maj John McConnell, born Dec.
12, 1780; died July 28,1866; agi d 84
years, 7 months and 11 days.”
“Sacred to the memory of Anne
McConnell, died M ty I, 18.7o, aged
05 years, 1 month and .1 days.”
My mind at once reverted to the
times long ago when my grandf.tih-

child amt told me of many things
I now lememlier well.
I visited the Cherokee gold mine
now owned und worked by Gen.
Warner, chairman ot the national
liiniet iHit* club. I saw the ore being
slumped and sepurated by a since
of water. One of the employes, who
w s a school.mate ol none when we
were little boys, selected three piec

examined it, fifty cents in gold iu
each piece.
The people here ceitainly Imve

DEAR MONEY.

XV III, in, 4,.,.r«*i«lii(lua Il'-Unr,
The discussion of the m.ill.‘V question
in the pusl few years Ijas made eleur to
rvliiKly the ilureasiKl purchasing
power of the dollar. Nobody questions
any long, r tlmi on the average a dollar
will purchase about twice as much of
ommodities as it would 26 years ago
Tile only question in dispute is whether
the dollar has appreciated in value or
rvthilig else vn the average has de
preciated. But Ihe diseussioll lias also
drawn attention closely to two things
and has had an effect on them that was
not anticipated. One is that the dollar
paid to the workingman buys about
twice as much as it did 26 years ago.
and therefore the same amount <>f mon
ey paid for wages means about twice as
much in what xt will buy The other is
that the dollar paid for interest will buy
twice as much, and therefore a rate of
:i per cent now gives a- much returns
to the lender as (I per cent did then
Until propositions have been freely
urged, and the effect of the lirst has
been to destroy very largely sympathy
w ith wage earner*
It is remarkable Imxv wide- proud has
become the claim that xv:i;fos arc too
high in Ibis country and must come
down. In fact the advance in wages
measured by purchasing power lias been
less iu tin* last, quarter of a century
than in the one preceding ami has not
kept puce with the increase of prodne
ing power, tmt these facts are not urged
by the employer. The effect of the sec
iiid proposition is seen iu tie* r.-itera
(ion of bankers that "low intercut rates
have coin.' to slay." Asa fset they
have come to go lower unless industrial
revival calls for tho use of money in
legitimate business. And there can Is?
no perumiioiil industrial revival if

MOST VIOLENT GASES HAVE
