tbe utility of gargling in diseases
throat has been questioned by
several physictnns of prominence in
Europe, a series of experiments were
recently made Dr. Hanger and are de
scribed lu a Munich medical journal
The therupeutic utility of gargling de
pends ou whether the fluid employed
reaches the mucous tueuibraue of the
pharynx aud tbe tonsils or not.
To determine this fset the tomtits of
a patient were painted with methyleue
Line, and he then was told to gargle
with plain wafer. The water ejected
from the mouth was found to be quite
colorless, snd the tonsilH still retained
their blue appearance In other experi
ments the velum, a portion of the
tongue sud the tonsils were dusted
with wheat Hour aud a gurgle given
tbe patieut in which iodine was mixed
with glycerin. It was found that the
velum and the tongue showed tbe blue
color of tbe reaction ou tbe starch, hut
the flour ou tbe tonsilu was neither col
ored uor washed away. Dr. Hunger be
lieves that gargling is useless, and
when a local treatment is desired u
swab of cottou wool should he eui
ployed — Exchange.

ice how extremely onerous are the con
ditions Hbder which the central light
ing atatlon engineer has to do his work
In almost every other branch of engi

slant factor, whereas tbe neutral light
station engineer has to provide the
plant for supplying a very large putput
fur a very few hours of the 24, while
tbe plant which ia to provide tbie out

day, practically idle and quite unre-
munerative. Theiefore a eompurutively
small proportion of tbe plant has to
earn a dividend ou an a mount of capi

ed by a few data of tha work porter mad
by These parts when the locomotive le
worked at high speed. Thus, in tba
case of a passenger engine at 60 miles
an hour, a driving wheel of Sj4 feat
diameter revolves five time* every sec
ond. and, this being so, the reciprocat
ing parts of each cylinder, including
one piston rod, crosshead and connect
ing rod, weighing about 000 pounds,
must move back and forth a distance
equal to the stroke, -say two feet, every
time the wheel revolves, or in tbe fifth
of a second. Tbis weight starts from a
state of rest at tbe end of each stroke
of tbe piston and must acquire a vel
ocity of 88 feet per second in one-twen
tieth of a second and must be brought
to a slate of rest in the same period of
time. A piston 18 inches in diameter
bus mu area of 254j| square inches;
steam of ISO'poumls pressure per square
inch would therefore exert a force ou
tbe piston equal to 88,176 pounds,
which force is applied alternately-on
each side of tbe piston teu times in a
eecoud.— New York Hnn.
