ZINC COMES HIGH.
The
lies l>,,nl,led Within Ihl
I’nst I ear.
Tlie recent rise in (lie price of zinc
ore. which ha* been greater then tb<
advance ii. iuirot copper. Iihh brought
AiueriCHii zinc properties liefore (lie
public as never before.
Lately, aavs the liostoii news bureau
bulletin, zinc ores sold at $52 per ton
tor lit) per cent ore. which is the stand
ard tlie price paid by the smelters'
agents at the mines varying above m
below this price according to the in
crease or decrease of the percentage of
zinc in the ore The previous highest
price was $48.50 per ton A year ago the
price was I'Jti per tun. or one-half the
prtsent extreme price, and a few years
ago the price was well below $20,
The advance in zinc has been due to
the exhaustion of iiupoitant mines
abroad especially in Belgium, where
they have been worked below the aeu
level and flooded; also to the increased
consumption of brass, vvlib Ii is made
of zinc and copper, and the expansion
of the electric field and the develop
ment of the e> alible proeess for gold
extraction. Mouth Africa alone is said
to consume -III,mill tons of zinc in the
extraction of gold through the evauide
process.
There Is no such thing as zinc scrap
Zinc is eaten up or vaporized, and is
more distinctly consumed than any
other li.etal It Is estimated that lu
the production of fill, noil in gold hy
the cyanide process two tons of zinc
are eaten op. In the electric field it is
the only negative metal, and there it
yet no substitute for it It is very
volatile, and in the ore smelting proc
ess it is flrst vaporized and then con-
densed. It letjuires three tons of coal
to so.sit one ton of zinc, ami therefore
zinc ores uie carried to the coalfields or
to the natural gas wells
The world's production of zinc is said
to he about 400,000 tons of zinc ore, of
which the United States is now pro
diii ing 205,000 tons per annum Lust
year the United States produced 235,-
000 tons of zinc ore. an increase over
1807 of 38.000 tons As three-quarters
of tho American supply comes from the
Missouri Kansas district, which will
run above 30 per cent of metallic zinc
in tin, ore. the American production of
zinc can la- safely set down as now
about OiO,000,000 pc on ds. which was
the American production of copper hut
a very lew years ago
As in copper, tho (Hisitive metal in
the electric Held, so in zinc America
now controls the markets of the. world.
It would appear that America hud not
only the telegraph and telephone de
velopment of Hit, world, but the elec
tric raiI wuy development .

Xuver Cut Alone,
The eolitaiy cater is always tempted
to take tut. large mouthfuls and swal

only one part of feeding, aud without
