Railroad Oonaolidatlon.
The report that was pretty gen
erally cirotlluUd a (lay or two ago,
namely, that a oomhinutinn ha<l
I men made lietween the two great-
enl railway syatema in the country
—the Now York Central and the i
l'emmylvaiiia—baa been denied, hut
there seems io lie a Iwliof that some i
aort of an arrangement tins been
entered into by those corporations.
II iiin.v he that wlial has been done
is Hint they have agreed not to out
rates.
They have hurt each other great*
ly within the Inst few years in theii
effort to got business in the terri
tory in which they are competitors.
It is not improbable that they have
com hided that in future they will
work in harmony. Hut even if
they have made no arrangement for
their mutual benefit the chances are
that they will do so in the very near
future. If they continue to o. in
pete with each other, they will, in
their effort to get business, throw
away their profile to such an extent
that they will not la* able to pay
dividends to their siisskholders, it,
in fact, they will be able to pay
their llxed charges The demand
from the public is for lower traffic
rates. The lowering of the rates
has kept pace with the improve
ments which lessen the actual cost
of transportation. The chances are
that the cost of transportation oan-
uot lie redact'd very much further.
It is not advisable to cut wages.
The thing that will be done then
will be to further consolidate rail
toad systems in nrdei to reduce
operating expenses.
There is no doubt lh it the oust t.f
operating the New York Central
and the lYumylvania railways
could lie cut down hundreds of
thousands nl dollars annually by
placing them under one manage,
nieiit. And if they should la; put
into one system theie are other
roads which would bo absorlied by
them. Indeed the work of oormoli.
dalinn might go on until there
woidd lie but two or three railway
systems in the country. The work
of building rdlroads i« pieuy i early
over. Only a thousand or so miles
of road a year are now being built
The period of tuilrosd building is
being succeeded by a p a riml of rail
road C( nsolidfttioli. No one cm
foretell with any degree of certainty
where consolidation will stop.
'I'lie public of course will tight
consolidation because of the diffi
culty of resisting consolidated pow
er. It it the public is really forcing
consolidation by insisting upoh
lower rates It may la- said that the
demand for lower rates is justified
hfeauto the railroads are over-capi
talized. No doubt some (I them
are. Most i.iilroads can tie built
for much less than the amount of
securities lor which they are liable.
Hut In considering the quest ion of
over-capitalization the fact must 1
taken into coesic.eration that the
loads have built up Hie business
which enables them to meet their
obligations. Hut if the water weie
taken out (if the shares of railways
af.il traffic rates slill further low.

THK ATLANTA CONSTITUTION'S Nt. W
*5,000.00 OK I KK.
The Atlanta Constitution announ
ces the result of its “Missing Word”
Contest that covered the months of
February and March, J/any of our
j subscribeis, perhaps, took part in
! that contest, and will lie glad to
know that Iho missing wotd was se-
; lected from a story by Thomas Nel-
1 son l’age. of Virginia, one of the
| most charming of our living South
ern orators. The story, “Pulaski's
Tuuamenl” contains the sentence,
“I was immediately conscious of the
effect which his endorsement pro
duced upon his companions.”
The pronoun “his" refers to Uncle
Hanover, the old negro who called
“to pay his respecks to degetu’ntan
front (to ole country.”
The total amount paid to the con
testants was ♦l,l. r »0 but there were
so many correct answers to the
word,the majority of them received,
as we understand, during the lust
week of the aontest, that the prize
I for each one was a vety Htnall sum,
I though some agents sent in sever-1
i correct answers each, and were ac
cordingly handsomely rewarded.
bast year the Constitution paid
j *2,5(10 to 1). P. Mcbuntln, of Clio,
j S C , for his estimate on the cotton
crop, and several other pri/.ss were
i paid ranging from t.'iTh 00 to t-Hi-i 00
j to other contestants. One feature of
j the cotton crop contest, that is not
iceable in its favor over the missing
word contest that has been so popu
lar is that the prize money is very
seldom divided to any considerable
extent and these estimates as a rule
pay very handsomely.
We wiah to state plainly for the
lienellt of all our subset liters lliut
