A Great Step Forward
It is predicted that results of far-reaching
significance will follow the action taken at the
meeting of Class No. 5 of the First Baptist
Church of Canton, held at the Hotel Canton, on
Tuesday evening, Jan. 31st. Visitors freely ex
pressed the opinion that this action is the first
step in a great march toward law-enforcement
in North Georgia in the near future.
This meeting was announced as a reward
meeting, invitations being issued to those who

and short talks were made by the officers, and
teachers of the class, followed by Mr. R.
T. Jones, who in a few well chosen remarks
introduced the speaker of the evening, Rev. A.
Chamlee, of HawkinsviHe, Ga., a brother of J.
W. Chamlee, the teacher of the class. The
title of Rev. Chamlee’s address was “The work
of our denomination and our duty as citizens
in the enforcement of laws and to society.” In
inspiring words, the speaker pictured to each
man personally, his duty to his God and his
fellows, and stirred the hearts of his listeners.
The wave of enthusiasm which followed this
address brought forth from the audience sev
eral'short talks; and as a climax the following
resolutions were introduced by the Rev. W.
H. Moody, which, after short discussion, were
adopted in their entirety by a standing unani
mous vote of all those present. These resolu
tions present in an unmistakable manner, the
desire and thought of every good citizen of our
community, and without doubt this meetring
marks the dawn of a better day for our Com
munity, our State and our Country.
We feel that this dkss of our Baptist
? i Sunday School deserves the thanks and appre
ciation of our people, for this frank, open,
straightforward and manly stand taken on this
subject, so important and vital to the mental,
moral spiritual and political life of our land.
RESOLUTIONS
WHEREAS;-
We, as citizens of this community, are
realizing more fully each day. the influence
for evil and the corruption of character which
is being exerted by the continual and open

The prevalence of crime which is being de
veloped and fostered as a result of the break
ing down of morals among our people by the
condoning of this criminal instinct, and

oHmized public opinion and expression can

authority be stemmed, and
WHEREAS;-
Class Number “Five” of the Baptist Sun
day School, and it’s officers is an organized
body, standing for high ideals in Religion,
Ethics, Morality and Law; is such a force in
this Community as should stand out courage
ously for the best interest of our citizens and
their ideals of law enforcement, and

WHEREAS
This class should and must go on record
in a strong and emphatic way.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, That class
number “Five” of the Baptist Sunday School
of Canton, Georgia, does hereby condemn in
the strongest possible terms the flagrant viola
tion of the Constitutional Law of our Land,
known as the Prohibition Law, and denounces
the mental, and moral attitude of our citizens
who use, purchase, sell or manufacture intoxi
cating liquor, or allow the same to be done with
their knowledge in any manner or way, in
violation of said Prohibiton Law. We assort
the duty of every good citizen of this county is
to stand four-square for the enforcement of
this law, and to exert every effort in his poWer
to secure that result. We maintain urgently
that the onlyway to secure the proper enforce-
ment of this law is the united sentiment and
backing of every good citizen. We urge upon
our people the use of their uptmost efforts
along this line. Supporting our moral ideals
by concrete endeavor,
WE RECOMMEND TO OUR -
City officials the following or similar procla
mation be made by them, and that whatever
action is necessary to put into effect these pro
clamations at once, be taken assuring them of
our assistance and support to make actively ef
fective their action.
SUGGSETED REWARDS.
1st; A reward of $10.00 for the evidence
necessary to arrest and CONVICT any person
having in their possession alcoholic liquor or
beverages, in violation of law.
2nd. A reward of $25.00 for evidence neces
sary to arrest and CONVICT any officer of the
law having in possession alcoholic liquor or
beverage for sale or use, in violation of law.
3rd. A reward of $25.00 for the arrest and
conviction of any person or persons selling,
deaing in alcoholic liquor or beverage within
three miles of the City limits of Canton, Geor
gia. in violation of the Prohibition law.
4th. A reward of $100.00 for the arrest and
conviction of any officer of the law selling or
dealing in alcholic liquor or beverage within
the County of Cherokee^ in fteialki a4 law.
5th. A reward of $100.00 for the arrest and
conviction of any officer of the law who per
mits the manufacture and dealing in whisky,
for sale or other purposes by any persons after
having been notified in writing of said manu
facturing or dealing in whisky by any person
and requested to perform his sworn duty under
the law against such person dealing in o(
manufacturing whisky and failing therein to
act accordng to his sworn duty. This reward
also to be paid for the arrest and evidence to
convict any such officer of the law, who allows,
for money or other considerations, any person,
with his knowledge, to transport, carry or
otherwise move such alcoholic liquor within or
through the territory or bounds of Cherokee
County, in violation of the law, and upon prop
er proof of said evidence having been furnished
or given.
The above rewards are to be paid in all
cases, for the evidence necessary to arrest and
successfully prosecute to conviction, any person
af the crime named in the paragraph above, to
tne person or persons furnishing the proper
officers such evidence.
Resolved further that a copy of these reso
lutions be furnished to the Mayor and Council
of Canton, Georgia, to the town and county ar
resting officer, Judge of the Superior Court of
the Bhfis Ridge Circuit. To the Solicitor Gen
eral of said Circuit, to the Recorder of the City
of Canton. To the Cherokee Advance and a
request made they be given prominence in pub
lication, and also a copy to the Christian Index.
That a committee of three be appointed to
carry out the provisions contained herein.
Resolved further that this is no wise a
