Atlanta Hank.
We publish, this morning, the majority and mi
nority reports of the committee appointed to ex
■imine ml" the affairs of the Atlanta Hank. Our
readers can judge for themselves, after examining
the reports, of the policy or necessity for the inves

State of Georgia, are involved in the solvency of
her Banking Institution.'. The Hank of Atlanta,
from the peculiar circumstances attending its
ovvnreship, its organization, and the Illinois locali

its affairs. If it can stand the ordeal—if it has a

The Desperate Attempt to Break Down the

tbowing the party complexion of that body, which
has been carefully prepared, and which we are

The Case of Mrs. ftaines.
A writer iu the New Orleans Delta contends that
Mrs. G aines is bvjio means certain of obtaining a
fortune bv the late decision in her favor. He
quotes the opinion of the court to fortify his opin
ion, and adds:
The probate of a will is a mere er jxtrte proceed
ing, mid is always granted if the applicant can
make out a prime-facte case; but if has no binding
effect on any one. Should Mrs. Gaines attempt to
claim any property sold by the executors under
the former, the parties sued could still, in addition
to their other defenses such as prescription, attack
the validity of the will, or nsjthe court observes,
“show that no such will was executed.”
The probability is that Mrs Gaines would not
be able to recover anything from Daniel Clark's
estate, even if there were a v alid will in her favor,
except what she might obtain by compromises
from parties who do not wish to be annoved by
litigation, for the simple reason that Daniel
Clark’s estate always was, and still is, insolvent.
The Romance of real Life.— The New York 1
Inbun* gives the following sketch of a personage
atone time widely known in the newspaper world :
“It is strange to watch how those whoat different
titties occupy a large space for the moment, either
in public tame or public scandal, disappear sud
denly from the scene and are forgotton, as the
wave of time passes over, until again they rise at
some distant spot, where one least expects to find
them. This thought is brought to our mind on
reading the last news from Asia of the death in
Arabia of laidy Ellenborougli, one who at one time I
was the star of London fashion, and whose beauty I
and wit, champagne of conversation, full of spar
kle and vivacity, gathered around her all that was
distinguished in English society. Among her
special admirers were George Canning and the
Duke of Wellington ; but to the discovery of her
amours with Prince Schwartzenberg, which led to
a trial that some years since created an intense
sensation among the aristocratic circles of Europe,
was owing tier separation and divorce from her
haughty and arrogant lord, who became so memor
able by the pomp and majesty of his short rule in
India. For years she had not been heard of, when
now we find her an Eastern Zuleika and the vic
tim °f a harem’s revenge. It is said she lias been
assassinated in Arabia bv “ Le Harem d'un cktik
Arab*.’’ How beyond all fiction would be the ro
mance of such a life if faithfully told !”
100 I rue.- —Somebody East, we know not who,
lias itnmoralized himself in the following insight
into human nature, which we indorse and liberal
ly commend to all cross-loving wives. lie says:
Whether a man leads a sober life or not depends
together upon the temper of his wife. No
man \i ill listen all night to a scold, who knows
where “a good warm sling” can be had for six
pence. At Cocktail’s, the other nigh, we found no
less than thirteen married men who spent six eve
nings’ a week squirting tobacco juice on a coal
stove. We thought we could find out who thev
were. On inquiring, we learned that eleven of
them were blessed with wives who “jaw,” while
he other two wedded a couple of “ the philanthro
pist” ladies, so constantly engaged iu the “wel
fare of Central Africa” that thev have no time to
keep their husbands’ shirts whole.
Moue of the Post Office Robbery. —We learn
that the following developments were made vester
day, which appear to be connected with the abstrac
tion of letters from the Post Office of this city. Mr.
Chisolm, the father of the young man charged with
theft, states that on the 20th December last, whiie
his family were at breakfast, one of his negro wo
men brought in a piece of newspaper tilled with
notes of the Bank of Charleston, which Mr. C.
found, on examination, to amount to $3,095. The
woman stated that she had picked it up in the
horse lot of the premises. Mr. C. made,a special
deposit of tins money in Bank, mentioning the cir
cumstance to only two persons, and awaited some
further development of the matter. Now, it ap
pears that on the 13th of December, Mr. Murdock,
agent of the Bank of Charleston, had placed
3 ,000 in the bills of that Bank iu the Post Office
here, in several different packages, to be mailed
west, and it has been ascertained" t hat none of those
packages reached their address. The inference is
irresistible that the money thus found is a pan ot
the money placed by Mr. M in the Post Office.
We learn that voting Chisolmn, has succeeded in
finding bail to the amount required sk,*hki.
