DAILY CINSTITITIONALIST BY JAMES OAR DNER. ; TUESDAY XORITIIfG, MARCH i. Contract Advertisers Must remember that five o’clock, P. 51., every i day, is tbe latest hour for receiving their adver- \ Using favors, for publication the ensuing morning, j River News. Dancing Academy. The admirers of this beautiful and graceful ac complishment will be pleased to learn that Mr. R. J. Powell proposes to open a Dancing Academy in this city. Mr. P. brings many letters, of a high ly favorable character, not only to bis private worth, but to his professional capacity. See ad vertisement in special notice column. Gordon Fargo at the City Hotel. We understood last evening, that this gentleman had made arrangements to take charge of the City Hotel. We cordially welcome back to our city the former “landlord of the United States.” Medical College ol Georgia. The twenty-fifth annual commencement of this Institution came off yesterday, at the Masonic Hall. Ex-Gov. Wm. Schlkt, President of the Board of Trustees presided, and delivered the Diplomas to the Graduates. Henry F. Campbell, M. D. Sec retarv. After an appropriate prayer by the Rev. Mr. Biouam, a very chaste, eloquent and effective ad dress was delivered to the Graduating Class, by the Rev. Mr. Rykrsox. The Valedictory Address was delivered by Dr. W. L. M. Ha rris, oneof the Graduating Class. It was a very satisfactory effort, cogent in reason ing and beautifully delivered, and afforded much pleasure to his highly intelligent audience. The present class, we learn, evidenced great pro fessional proficiency at their examination, and our community bear testimony to their gentlemanly bearing in social intercourse. The Graduating Class at the present term, great ly exceeds in number that of any previous year, and indicates a very flourishing state of the In stitution in this city, notwithstanding the multi plication of Medical Colleges throughout the country. Sales at the Lower Market. Quite a large amount of valuable property is to he offered for sale to-day at the lower market house. See our advertising columns. Sales To-day. We invite the attention of capitalists to the sales to-day, at the lower market house, of the real estate, negroes, Bonds and Stock of the Georgia Railroad and Banking Company, Bonds of the State of Georgia, Bank of Augusta Stock, Bank State of Georgia Stock, Ac., belonging to the estate of Isaac Tuttle, deceased. As the Augusta Orphan Asylum is tyc residuary legatee of the estate, we trust that some lively competition in bidding will be indulged in. The Atlanta Intelligencer. We thank our friends of the Atlanta intdikja. cer, for calling our attention to a matter which eu tirely escaped our attention. The repetition of the mistake would seem to exhibit us to the InteUi gti->r in an unfavorable light.. We can assure the editor that the error was not intentional, and v.e regret its occurrence. The Soil of the South. The March number of this very deservedly popular agricultural journal, is <m our tuble. It is published in Columbus, Ga., b\ Loitvx and Ei.us, at $1 per year. Edited by Jam;.; M. and Vw. 11. Chambers, in the Agricultural, and Cu um.es A. I’e.abodt in the Horticultural department. Death of Hon. George W. Owens. The Savannah RtpuHlean of yesterday morn ing announces the death in that city on Sunday morning last, of thn Hon. Gkorue W. Owens, in the Totli year of his age. Mit. Owens represented this State in Congress from Is;},-, to Is.'V.t. £S?"Ckaklbs J. .Jenkins, Esq., was elected yes terday, .Senator to the State Legislature, to supple the vaenney occasioned by the death of Hon. A. J. Miller. There was no opposition, and the vote was not large. 2-4?” The Wilkes Republican, heretofore a deci ded Know Nothing paper, in its issue of the 29th February, does not favorably appreciate the change made in the platform of its party in Philadelphia, and takes the position “of an outsider.’’ Until the nomination of a candidate for President, by the na tional Democratic party in Cincinnati, the editor says “we stand neutral and if Mr. Fillmore sanctions the insane conduct of his party at the North, tin- Wilkes Republican will not sustain him. Wo understand that the I. gislature of this State adjourned late on Saturday night last. 2-ff We understand that when the trains left Atlanta on Sunday morning, snow was falling rap idly, and the storm reached as low down as Stone Mountain. 2-4?" By the steamer Illinois, at New York, wc liave accounts of a severe Indian battle in Wash ington Territory, in which the crew of the U. S. ship Decatur wore engaged. About thirty-five Indians were killed and thirty-six wounded, and two whites only killed. Gov. Stevens has issued a proclamation calling for six companies of volun teers to serve for six months. In Oregon, the weather lias been so intensely cold as to suspend all operations in Hie Indian war. i-tTT he mother of Governor Andrew Johnson, of Tennessee, died at Greenville in that State, on the 13th February last. ihe latest news of the whereabouts of Hon. Millard Hllvork, located him in Rome, whither lie had gone, to obtain a bust of himself, iu marble, from the celebrated Amerieau sculptor, Bartholemew. Z-W~ The report that the President has determin ed to dismiss Mr. Cramptox, is not true. Spbixo is \t Hand.—From Alabama papers we learn that immense flocks of wild pigeons are swarming in the woods, attracted by the abundant crop of acorns, not vet fallen from the oak trees. 1 n the neighborhood of Ely ton they have a roost which, our journal says, is dangerous to approach, from the number of branches broken off and fall ing from the weight of the birds. Fr ancis, the inventor of the Patent Metallic Life Boat*, is in 1 aris, basking in the sunshine of Im perial favor. Under the auspices of the Emperor himself, an establishment for the manufacture of Francis’ Life Boats is being built in Baris. H is to be entirely a Government affair. M r . Francis has also been the recipient of a gold snuffbox, in laid with diamonds. The Galveston JieiM says, it appears to be pretiv well ascertained now, that the late severe co'd weather has killed the lemon trees down to the roots, and also many of the orange trees, though some of the latter do not appear to be much in jured. The Lynchburg Va. Republican savs the vote ot \ irginia will be cast iu the Cincinnati Conven tion, either for Uccbanan or Hcxtib Veto of the Iliwassee and Blue Ridge Railroad Bill. We are informed that Gov. Johnson has vetoed the above bill recently passed through both branch es of the General Assembly by decisive majorities. The veto is accompanied by an elaborate argument : in support of it. Until we see the message, we ! shall forbear comments upon this responsible step ol his Excellency, and on the arguments by which he undertakes to sustain it. We will nowonlv re-ex press our convictions in behalf of the strong equity on which the application for the charter is based. We sincerely regret the disappointment the appli cants have met with (a temporary one we appre hend) and hope that they are not forever to be de nied the privilege of getting to market by the near- j est route, by means of a railroad, when they asked j no pecuniary aid from the State to accomplish that ! result. Appointments by the I‘resident— By and with the adviee and consent of the Senate. —John B. Nor max, surveyor of the customs at New Albany, In diana, vice Jas. M. Morrison", declined. RE-APPOINTMENTS. Woodford Mabry, collector of the customs for i the district of Brunswick, Georgia. Henry D. Norton’, surveyor of the customs at Copano, Texas. John A. Cavkdo, surveyor of the customs at Fer nandina, Florida. N. M. Blrford, Democrat, has been elected Judge of the Sixteenth District of Texas, by a large majority. Judge Bl rford is said to be one ; oi the ablest Democratic speakers in the State. i Heirs Wanted. —We notice in the Washington I Union an inquiry for John Steel, living in George town, S. C'., some twenty years since as heir to prop erty in England. The Gonzales Inquirer states that a runaway ne j gro, arrested in Mexico, was taken through that ' place recently, after having been five years in Mex : ico. He was from the Brazos, and had been ar rested and sent to San Antonio by a Mexican. Products of North Carolina. —The popular i idea that North Carolina produces nothing but | “tor, pitch, and turpentine,” is fast being dispelled by the railroads, with which the energy of her citizens are covering her territory. Last year the county of Hyde exported corn and wheat to the amount of #360,000; and the county of Edgecombe raised and sold |400,000 worth of cotton. The exports from Washington, N. C., for last year, amounted to $] ,020,613 12; of which $37,045 was ju> foreign countries. Since the opening of the i' rntral railroad to Greensborougli, there have been live hundred and thirty-nine barrels of Hour sent from that town, of which three hundred and twen ty went to Norfolk; fifteen thousand barrels of dried fruit were among the first receipts in Norfolk, which resulted from the opening of the Central railroad. The New 1 ork Ecening Pont, of Wednesday, outains a despatch from Washington, stating that or. Marcy’s final despatch'to Mr Buchanan, of 1 lecember 2Sth, which was included in the docu ments sent to the Senate on Wednesday, demand ed explicitly the recall of Mr. Cn ami-ton. Mr. Marcy wrote: “Ilis connection with that affair, ie enlistment, Ims rendered him an unacceptable representative of her Britaunie Majesty to this gov mment, and you are directed by the President to ;sk her Majesty’s government to recall him.” Mr. Mai:i v also asks the recall of Consuls Bar. i lav. "at New York, Roaveurovt, at Cincinnati, and Mathew, at Philadelphia. The Hong Kong Peg inter, of December 4th, thinks that the treaty with Japan, recently conclu ded by Sir James Stirli.no, is of about as much real value as that between Japan and the United states. 31’lle. Teresa Parodi. We understand that this accomplished vocalist, ind Signor Leonard], the eminent Bariton, assist ■d by Mine. Amai.ia Patti Strakosch, the distin guished contralto, under the direction of the great Pianist, M. Strakosch, will give a grand Concert a this city early next week. All lovers of the ‘concord of sweet sounds” will go to see and bear iiis celebrated Italian birdling, of whose merits ve may judge by the following notice in the New Orleans Delta: “ Much as has been said of Parodi, and high as public expectation had been raised with regard to ser abilities, we are sure no one could be dtsap minted. The perfect melody, the evenness, the . olmne of her voice, are very striking. We have never heard any other voice in Avhich all these pialities were united in so high a degree. Her singing is characterized by the greatest purity of style. It is truly classic. She avoids all meretri •i’ous ornament; she disdains the tinkling caden zas and roulades with which it has become fash ionable to overload the melody and astonish the hearer. Her power lies in higher qualifications Mian these. It is felt in her rich tone, her warm expression, her finished execution. Whenever she -mploys an embellishment, its simplicity, novelty, amt propriety, render it peculiarly pleasing.” [communicated, j Annual Meeting of th- Board of Trustees of the Medical College of Georgia, An gusta, March 3, 1850. The Trustees, Faculty, and Students, assembled at the College, at 10 o’clock, A. M., and went in procession to the Masonic Hull. The following report of the Dean of the Faculty was then read: REPORT. Auovsta, March 3, 1856. The Faculty report to the Trustees of the Medi cal College of Georgia, that there were one hun dred and seventy Students in attendance upon the Course of Lectures just concluded; of whom 119 were from Georgia, 22 from Alabama, 18 from South Carolina, 5 from Mississippi, 2 from North Carolina, 2 from Florida, 1 from Texas, and 1 from Nova Scotia. The very agreeable report of a splendid dinner, 5 numerously attended, and all sort of thing, given in honor of the lion. Henry M. Fuller, bv his con stituents, at Wilkesbarre, Pa., and which has been so freely circulated about, turns out to be a fancy sketch—nothing of the sort having occurred. A correspondent of the N. Y. Tribune, writing from | Wilkesbarre, Feb. 21st, says : The news of a public dinuer to the Hon. Henry M. Fuller was received here, via the citv papers, with perfect astonishment. How any gentleman could manufacture such a fabrication, is astonish ing. The truth of the matter is very easily stated : Mr. McGilchrist of the Phcenix Hotel had circulars printed, and a few personal and private friends in vited to a supper. Mr. Fuller was among the in vited, and as you will perceive bv the following ex tract from the Wilkesbarre Record of the'Times, himself one of the invited guests: “ A party of Mr. McGilchrist’s friends, by invita tion, met him at the Phoenix Hotel, on Monday night, and enjoyed a sumptuous supper, in ac knowledgement of a beautiful silver pitcher and waiter that his friends had presented him a few weeks since. Speeches were made by H. M. Ful ler, Harrison Wright, E. B. Harvey, Washington Lee, jr., and S. S. Winchester.” Tliis is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. A Gymnastic Senator.— The Boston Post , refer ring to Senator Hale’s attack on the President’s message, savs: “Jack Hale turned a sumerset, stood on his head, walked on his hands, and cut up other antics to amuse the Senate, when the mes sage was read to that body, and finally resumed his seat without injuring 'any one or tearing his clothes.” MARRIED, On the 26th ult., by Judge W. It seldom occurs that we notice, under any circum stances, patent medicines, restoratives, or any thing of the kind, for we have a prejudice against most of them. But candor compels us to invite atten tion to the advertisement of Prof. Wood’s Ilair \ Restorative, in the last column at the bottom of ] the third page of this paper. We are too juvenile ! to require any thing of the kind, but some instances | of its use have come to our knowledge which al most assure us that it is a sovereign reined vagainst • the hair becoming prematurely gray. It is not a i “ Hair Dyebut upon its application, as directed, ; the effect is produced on the skin, which brings out the original native colored hair, without stiff ness, and gives it a glossy and natural appearance.
