Dkath of Matt Peel.— A dispatch from Buf
j falo, published in the New York Herald, of the
; 6th inst., announces the death of Matt Peel, the
celebrated negro delineator, and proprietor of the
: Campbell Minstrels.
XW We find the following telegraphic items in
I our Nashville exchanges:
PITTBBUBG, May 7.— A tire caught to-day, at noon,
! on board the steamer llenry Graff, and "destroyed
icn steamboats, as follows : llenry Graff. James
| Gray, Council Bluff, James Wood," J. H. Curren,
I Potomac, Belmont, Cremona, Commerce, and Pa
uola. The heat was great and the flames terrific.
The Pennsylvania railroad freight for the West,
i was on board the Economy and South America,
which escaped. The latter having steam up tow
ied away and saved thirty other boats. The loss of
freight is small, the boats destroyed having little
j or none aboard. Great damage to the warehouses
! on the wharf was threatened, but was averted.
Pittsburg, May 7.— The loss by the steamboat
fire is one hundred and fifty-five thousand dollars.
1 Freights insured at ten thousand dollars.
New York, May 7.—Port Au Platte advices say
I that the Dominican government has negotiated
I with au American company to work their gold
I mines.
Watertown, N. Y., May 7.— The Black river
woolen mills are burned, aud two operativas, and
thirteen others are seriously injured. Loss forty
thousand dollars, partly insured.
St. Louis, May 7. — The Santa Fe mail, of the
18th ult., has arrived at Independence.
The Navajoes are quiet aud peaceful.
Accident. —We regret to announce that ou yes
terday evening, as the gun squad of the Montgom
ery Blues were preparing to charge their cannon
the cartridge was accidently ignited, prior to being
jmt in the gun, and several ot the company were
slighily wounded; among whom were Lieutenant
Andrews, Sergeaut Hughes, and private Marks,
formerly captain of the company.
We greatly regret the unfortunate denouement to
the encampment, which has otherwise passed off
j most pleasantly. —Macon .State Frees, B th inst.
Another Fire. Yesterday, about half-past one
j o’clock, the stable of Mr. H. C. Bronson, in Laurel
street, was discovered to be on fire. The alarm
was immediately given, but owing to the distance
and the deficiency of water, the fire engines were
unable to render assistance. By connecting their
hose they were enabled to druiv from one of the
hydrants on Main street. The Council should pro
j ceed promptly to lay down adequate pipes on the
■ streets contemplated simultaneously. There is no
knowing when aud where they may be needed.
Bv the active exertions of individuals using buck
ets, and with the co-operation of the Hook and
Ladder Company, the fire was confined to the
stable. It could uot have been of accidental ori
gin. The building was a new one.
Columbia >South Carolinian, May 7.
Hidden Death. —We learn that one of the work
men upon the railroad dropped dead last Wednes
day, while going from breakfast to work. Disease
ot the heart is said to have been the cause.
