Speeders’ Katifieation Meeting.
The seceders’ ratification meeting, on the public
square in this citv, night before last, was a very
grand and magnificent failure. We expected to
see gathered together the largest crowd of the
season, especially as there was considerable curi
osity to hear Mr. Vaneev, the big gun of the se -
cession and disunion Democracy. But the au
dience was small, and the speaking dull. There
was no life in the meeting whatever; and cer
tainly the ball does not open very brightly for
Breckinridge in Virginia.
Although it was professedly a Breckinridge and
I.ane ratification meeting, one of the speakers, ;
Beverly B. Douglas, Esq , of King William, made 1
an earnest and effective appeal to the Democracy
of Richmond not to ratity the nomination of the
seceders’ ticket, at least lor the present. We pre
sume that some of the leaders ot the party desire j
the assembling of a State convention, and leave it j
to that body to decide between Breckinridge and j
Douglas. But the friends of Douglas in Virginia j
are scarcely green enough to be caught in such a j
trap as that.
’ihose delegates to Baltimore, who remained in j
the Convention, are bound in honor and good
taith, to support Douglas at all hazards. They 1
are bound, in honor and good faith, to get up an j
electoral ticket for him in Virginia, and do all in
their power to secure ihe Democratic vote of (he
State tor him. This is their duty, as honest and j
honorable men, and they must discharge it zeal- !
ouslv- and firmly. A large majority, perhaps, of |
the Democratic voters of Virginia, prefer Douglas j
to Breckinridge, as will be demonstrated at the
polls, in November. Besides, Douglas will obtain
a large vote in eotry Slate in the Union, North aud j
South, while Breckinridge will obtain no vote at
alt 111 all . north -i a Htate, tli the exeoj-ti.>o, par
haps, ot California and Oregon. Indeed, Breck- j
inridge is as much a sectional candidate as Lin- j
coin, an.l is the nominee of a thoroughly sectional j
party. Ihat is looking anxiously lo an early disso- :
iution of the Union. The national and conserva
tive Democrats of Virginia, therefore, cannot vote
for Breckinridge.
John Heart, Esq.— We regret to learn from the
correspondents of the different northern papers,
thai Mr. John Heart, formerly of this paper, and
lately superintendent of public printing at Wash
ington, has beeu removed. We presume the cause
may be found in Mr. Heart’s honest and straight
forward testimony before the Covode committee, j
The correspondent of the Philadelphia Press j
says: 40>
President Buchanan, on Sunday, removed Mr.
John Heart, superintendent of public printing,
and appointed Adam J. Glossbrenner, of York,
Pennsylvania, in his place, llis public excuse lor 1
this act was that if Heart were retained he would
assist the joint committee of the two Houses to j
purchase the Wendell office, under the bill lately |
passed by Congress to establish a National print- ‘
lug institution.”
The Bohemian correspondent of the Philadel
phia En 11 ui rer, says :
Brigadier General Bowman lias found his print
ing plunder curtailed by liie honest and upright
conduct of Johu Heart, superintendent ot public
printing. So he has persuaded his patron. J. 8..
to remove Mr. Heart and to appoint Mr. Gloss
brenner, iate sergeant at—arms ot the House.
1 his malicious act of revenge has caused deep in
dignation, and st-veial southern Senators have not
hesitated to express their opinion, in no very
complimentary terms, ot Bowman, Buchanan,
Bigler and Black -the juarlHt-j in li minor.
C’o rkstun Here ary, Jane‘l'3.
W ashinbton, June 27. The National Executive
coiumittee of tiie Breckinridge and I.ane ticket is
its follows :
Isaac J. Stevens, of Oregon ; George W. Hughes,
of Maryland; John \V. Stevenson, of Kentucky;
\V T ut. Fiinn, James G. Berret, Walter larnuox, Geo.
W. Higgs, ol VV.i hmglon, li. C.; Jefferson Davis,
of Mississippi; Thomas li. Florence, of Pennsyl
vania; J. R. Thomson, of New Jersey; Augustus
Schell, of New York; A, li. Meek, of Alabama;
J. D. Bright, of Indiana, and Robert Johnson, of
Arkansas. Mr. W Dusky has been appointed
Secretary.
Washington, June 27.—The astronomical party
have completed their arrangements for leaving
New York on the ‘2Bih lust., to proceed to Gape
Chadleigb, Salvador, lor tbe purpose of observ
ing the total eclipse of tbe sun which will occur
ou the 18th of July. The astronomers of the
party are J’rof. Stephen Alexander, of Princeton,
N. ,).; President F. A. P. Barnard, of Oxford,
Miss ; Prof. C. S. Venable, of North Carolina ; I
Prof. A. \V. Smith, of the Naval Academy, at Au
napolis, Md.; and Lieut. F. I*. Ashe, R. N-, ot the
Quebec Observatory.
The United States steamer Bible, Lieut. Com
manding Alexander Murray, has been selected tor

nerimeut on many of the worst eases to be found of the fol
lowing complaint* :

tive Diseases, Ulcers, Fimplt.x. Blotches, Tumors, Salt
Rheum, SeaJtl Heads. Syphilis aud Syphilitic Affections-. Mer
curial Disease, Dropsy. Neuralgia, or Tic Dolourcux, Debil
ity, Dyspepsia, and Indigestion; Erysipelas, Rose, or Saint
Antony's Fire, aad Indeed the whole class of complaints aris
ing from Impurity of the Blood.
This compound will be found a great promoter of health,
when taken in Hie spring, to expel the foul humors which fes
ter in the blood at that season of the year. By the tin.el) ex
pulsion of them, many rankling disorders are nipped in the
bud. Multitudes can, by the aid of this remedy, spare then
selves from the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous
sores, through which the system will strive to rid itself of cor
ruptions, if not assisted to do this through the natural chan*
pels of the body by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the
vitiated blood whenever yon find its impurities bursting
through the skin in pimples, eruptions, or sores; cleanse it
when you find it is obstruct* <1 and sluggish ir. the veins: cleanse
it whenever it is foul, and ypur feelings will tell you w hen.
Even where no naiuculai disorder is felt, people enjoy better
health, and live longer, for cleansing the blood. Keep the
blood healthy, and all is well; but with thi* pabulum of life
disordered, there can be no lasting health. Sooner or later
something must go wrong, and the great machinery of life is
disordered oroverthrown.
Sarsaparilla has. and deserves much, ihe reputation of ac
complishing these, euds. But the world has been egregionsly
deceived by preparations of lt, parti y because the drug alone
ha* not ail the virtue that is claimed for it. but more because
uai,y preparations, pretending to be concentrated extracts of
ii,contain but little of the virtue of .Sarsaparilla or anything
else.
During late years, the public have lawn misled hy large
bottles, pretending to give a quart of Extract of .Sarsaparilla
t.-r one dollar. Most of these have been frauds upon the sick,
fur tl.ey not only contain little, if any. Sarsaparilla, but often
no curative proper-tie- whatever. Hence, bitter and painful
disappointment j-a* followed the use . f the various extracts of
Sarsaparilla which fiood the market, until the name itself is
;-.,stiy despised, and has become synonymous with imposition
and cheat. Still we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and
intend to supply such a remedy aa shall rescue the name from
the load of obliquy which reatsupon lt. Ann we ihink we
