BRECKINRIDGE STOCK IN PIERCE COUNTY.
The editor of the Brunswick (Ga.) Advocate, a
Brkckixeiidgx paper, says in a letter written at
jilacksliear, in Pierce couuty, on the first of .Sep
tember :
“I cannot sav that we are (the Breckinridge
party) gaining strength in this section, because at
the opening of the campaign, all were for Breckin
ridge ; of course if any take place at all, they must
be against us.’!
The editor says of a discussion which took
place there between a Bull man and a Bbeckix
KiWißinan:
“Judging bv the applause and other demon
strations made, there were more Bell and Everett
men at the meeting than I thought could be found
in the county. There is no use to try to deceive
the people by false statements or concealment,
and l frankly acknowledge that there is consid
erable enthusiasm among the Bell and Everett men,
and they are constantly gaining strength.”
CORRESPONDENCE.
Milwacki*, Wis., Sep. 7, 1860.
Mr, Editor: 1 learned through the public press
that on the4th lust, the Breckinridge Democracy
of Wisconsin were to hold a convention at the St.
Charles Hotel, in this city, for the purpose of
nominating Presidential electors. Anxious to at
tend, and being nnabie to find anyone going to
the convention, I was compelled to make search
alone for the wonderful affair. On my arrival at
the appointed place, and still unable to obtain auv
definite information regarding it, I entered the
hotel, aud after ascending several flights of steps,
and performing various windings, 1 discovered
(without the aid of a telescope, too,) the object of
my search, in a room about thirty by forty feet,
where there were just lifty-three men—twenty of
whom had been mustered up from Ih*s city, (a
beautiful city too, by the way, and containing
about titty thousand inhabitants). The greatest
confusion and excitement prevailed among them
as to the fact whether they should nominate a
straight out Breckinridge ticket, or fuse with the
National Democracy, who had already nominated
their electors, (and as they asserted, Lad refused
any compromise with them). After an excited
and protracted debate, it was decided, by a small
majority, in favor of nominating anew ticket, for
the reason that the Douglas Democracy wtre too
independent, and had not treated them with
sufficient notice, and the meantime openly declar
ing that their ticket could not possibly get over
three thousand votes in the Statejand their speakers
denouncing Douglas in the most bitter terms, and
boldly proclaiming that they preferred the election
of Lincoln to that of Douglas. And that is the
true feeling here among the Breckinridge men,
and that is the real object of getting up Breckin
ridge tickets at the North. I have talked with
their men, and have not yet found a man that ever
pretends that Breckinridge can carry a northern
fvtate. A Breckinridge man at this convention
told me that most of the delegates present were
holding, at this time, some oilicc under the Gen
eral Government, and when I crowded him to the
sticking point, admitted that Breckinridge had
little or no strength at the North, except Govern
ment officials and their “hangers on.” They sent
to Illinois for Col. Campbell to address the con
vention, hoping to arouse the masses, but all to
no purpose—there were not more than one bun
dred persons present to bear him. His speech,
consisting in falsehoods and slanders, fell as cold
as a snow storm. The Douglas Democracy here
take the position that slaves are property, and
stand upon the same footing with other property;
and while they believe in the doctrine of popular
sovereignty, they openly declare that if tbe Su
preme Court shall declare that the people of the
Territory cannot decide the slavery question, un
til thev go to form their State Constitution, that
they will cheerluly abide bv, aud faithfully carry it
out. What more can the South ask ?
And why will the Breckinridge Democracy
further persist in their ruinous course of dividing
and distracting the Democratic party, thereby en
dangering the perpetuity of the Union ? Such a
course is suicidal in the extreme, and can result
oalv in evil. Madness has gained control over
them, and if they cannot rule the party aud the
country, they prefer ruin—l fear. The Democra
cy are thoroughly aroused, and if united on Doug
las would carry the enure North-west. His friends
are strong in the faith that he will carry this State.

DOUGLAS AND JOHNSON PAPER,
TO BE PUBLISHED PAILT AND WKEKLT,
IN THE CITY OF COLUMBUS, GA.
FIMIE undersigned proposes to publish In the city of Colum.
.1 bus, G&., a daily and weekly paper, to be called the STAR.
This paper will be devoted to the support of Stephen A.
DoroLAM, of Illinois, for President, and llkrsohrl V. John
son, of Georgia, for Vice President of the United States, as the
regular nominees of the National Democratic party of the
U i.ion. It will advocate and maintain the great time honored
principles of that party, as laid down at Cincinnati in 1856,
and re affirmed in Baltimore In June, 1860. We shall stand
upon the doctrines of non-intervention by Congress with sla
very in the States and Territories, leaving the people thereof
perfectly free to form and regulate their domestic institutions
m their own wav, subject only to the Constitution of the
United States. The times are sadly “out of joint,” and we
think that the period has arrived when patriots everywhere
should make common cause and a common effort to maintain
the rights, the honor, the liberty, and the union of the States
of tliis great Republic.
The first number of the STAR will be Issued on the 10th dav
of September, upon the following terms, invariably in ad
vance :
Dally paper, for one year $6 00.
Weekly paper, for oi>e year 2 60.
We appeal to our friends—we Invoke the friends ot the Con
st it ut ion and of a Constitutional Union, everywhere, to aid
and encourage our effort and enterprise. The'paper will cer
tainly be issued on the 10th day of September next, and will
be continued for one year at least. Send us your subscriptions,
and urge your neighbors to subscribe, and we pledge ourselvts
to send forth a paper worthy the noble ana sacred cause in
which we have engaged. THUS. DeWOLF.
