Phe Watchful Sentinel.— ln copying
a paragraph from the Constttuionalist,
yesterday morning, relative to the reported
endorsement of Bullock’s administration by
•Judge Garnett Andrews, our neighbor
across the street grow r s exceedingly face
tious over the fact that the Chronicle <fc Sen
tim called attention to said report as early
a the 30th ult. It professes a fear that we
have been "taking a Rip Van Winkle nap
recently,” and in our "dreams had visions
only ofthe beautiful blondes in stockinet
dallying before the footlights,” liecause we
announced that we had not "been ad
vised that Judge Andrews has been
hobnobbing with the destructives in their
love feasts.” We scarcely know whicli
to admire most in .our neighbor’s squib,
the delicate disguise of self-commenda
tion apparent or the sublimity of pro
sumption manifested that we should con
sider onrselvjes and the public advised ofthe
certainty of an event Chronicled before it was
at least nine days old, bis vaunted watch
fulness and prophetic ken to the contrary
notwithstanding.
Os the blondes, if of them we have had
visions, we dream as with open eyes we see
a certain quantity of 'prints manufactured
-as something intended for illusion, and
only to be sold by the continued com
mendation of the peddler, who doubly sells
all who are beguiled by his oily gammon.
But the most refreshing picture drawn
hy our friend is the role assumed of arro
gating an argus eyed vigilance of trans
piring events, nudging us to awake, with
the somewhat paradoxical proclamation :
the world is mooing arouud you still."
Whoever beard ol anything in motion
hetng still? We generally manage to
“sleep with one eye open,” however, and
with that eye, yesterday morning, beheld
in the columns.of our cotemporary a pal
pable violation of the injunction he ad
dressed so earnestly to us. “ Be just, neigh
bor, if you do dream." It consisted of the
appropriation of at least two-thirds of the
body and the entire soul of our "firemen’s |
prize” local, without acknowledging pa- \
ternlty. Knights who arc only clad in !
vitreous armour, should be very careful j
how they tight.
Gikardey’s Opera House. —Othello is
perhaps the most passionate of all the
plays of Shakspeare. In the title part an
actor of robust intensity has a splendid
field for the exhibition of his peculiar pow
ers; for while OlheUo is at times tender,
loving indignant and at last mad with
jealousy, he does nothing by halves and is,
iu every emotion, the most impetuous of
men. Though Mr. Warner still suffered
from hoarseness, and though his vivid in
tellect evidently wrestled with vocal de
rangement, the absolute grace of his atti
tudes and gesticulation, the striking origi
nality of tiis conceptions and the magnetic
charm of his elocution broke betimes
through all trammels and won the hearty
and fervid plaudits ofthe very large and
appreciative audience.
Mi. Fannin’s lago was a sketch full of
power and subtlety. His cold blooded con
trast to Warner’s whirlwind of passion
was highly artistic, and a worthy compan
ion piece to the rival character of Othello.
We congratulate Mr. Fannin upon his
wibrt. It was indeed masterly.
Mr. Wood’s Cassio , though lacking per
haps some of the bluntness of the devoted
follower of Othello, was a clever perform
ance. There are few actors more conscien
tious than Mr. Wood, or more perfectly
aufait in all the details of his profession.
Mr. Parker was a good Brabantio, and
Sam Ryan made of Roderigo all that was
possible to be made of it.
Miss Lillie Eldrldge surpassed herself as
Detdemna. We think this the best part,
rhe has yet enacted, and when It is remem
bered how admirable she was as Ophelia
and Parthenia, we mean this to be the
highest praise.
Mrs. Eldridge as Emilia displayed her
usual correctness and spirit.
We accord much praise to Mr. Gardner,
Hie efficient stage manager, for the good
Uste and elegant manner in which the dis
■ rent dramas have been put upon the
sta ge. The meed of praise is likewise to
be given to the skill of Mr. Parker for the
vapidity and “kill he has manifested in
originating and painting a number of new
scenes.

Runaway. —Yesterday afternoon, about
2 oclock, a mule attached to a cart, the
property of Mr. Pat. Primrose, while cart
ing a numlier of swine from the City
Pound, became frightened at the grunting
and squealing of liis load, and made a suc
cessful effort to get rid of the rooters by
running away. Dashing up Telfair street,
the bandaged hogs were spilled upon the
pavement, the cart upset opposite the resi
dence of Judge Gibson, and the negro
driver fell under it, sustaining severe in
juries on his head, face and back. He was
sent to the hospital for treatment.
Impecunious.—lt is said that the City
Council are to be petitioned, to-night, tor
the grant of the privilege of the Bell
Tower, overlooking the lot from which the
balloon ascension is to be made on Monday.
The signers of the petition are wry desirous
of seeing the “ Hyperion ” navigate, but

section of the city, since the balloon pic

Brought Out and Returned.—Yester

Mary Benjamin on the 12th of January,

for a hearing. They waived examination,
and, in default of bail, were recommitted
to jail. A small portion of the stolen
money has been recovered.
Recorder’s Court —A couple of our
leading business men were arraigned, yes
terday morning, charged with infracting
the 18t'n commandment. The assailant
plead guilty, and was fined $lO and cost,
and the assaulted discharged.
Robert McWhorter, a heavy speaker, and
yet not of Bullock’s construction, was ar
raigned for violation of the 18th section.
Plead guilty, and fined $5 and cost.
Military Mayor of Rome, —The Cou
rier says it is rumored that two or three
men have been appointed Military Mayor
of Rome, and that all have declined. A
very sensible course for them to take, as the
position would inevitably entail odium
upon any man. We hope to hear nothing
more of this Military Mayoralty.

been formed at Valhermosa Springs by
Messrs. Guoi, Gaven and Egger, and their

for quite a number of Western New York

A Horrible and Atrocious Murder—
A Mother Shot with her Baby at the
Breast.— By a gentleman from up the
Seaboard Hoad we have just, heard the de
tails of a most horrible crime committed
by some fiend incarnate in Mecklenburg
County, Va., near Gaston, N C.' on Tues
day night last.
It appears that a lady by the name of
Mrs. Rollins, who lives in that neighbor
hood, was sitting in her house With a bab}'
at her breast nursing, and two or three of
her small children playing round about her
in the room, when the murderer approached
the vyindow and discharged a double-bar
relled gun, loaded with buckshot and
several large slugs, into her right side,
Wiiich passed through her body and came
out on her left side, near the region of her
heart, killing her instantly. The infant at
her breast was not hurt, nor were any of
the other children. There were no grown
persons in the room at the time.
Our informant tells us that suspicion
rests on a negro man whose wife Mr. Rol
lins had discharged from service a day or
two before this horrible deed was perpe
trated, as he had been heard to make some
threats about having' veugeance. It is be
lieved he went there with the design of
taking Mr. Rollins’ life, but, finding him
absent, the fiend murdered his wife in place
of him. Our informant could not recollect,
the negro’s name, and was not informed
whether he had yet been arrested.

NERVOUS HEADACHE, LIVER COM
PLAINT, &c., efec.—Tho braiu being the most
delicate and sensitive of all our organs, is ne
cessarily more or less affected by all our bodily
ailments. A headache Is often the first symp- 1
tom of a serious disease. If the nervous sys
tem is affected, thpre is always trouble at its
source in the pericranium. And it may be
here remarked that as the nervous fibre per
vades the entire frame, no part of the physical
structure can be affected without the nerves
suffering sympathetically. Liver complaint of
every typo affects the brain. Sometimes the
effect is stupor, confusion of ideas, hypochon
driasis ; sometimes persistent or periodical
headache. Iu shy case, the beat remedy that
can be taken is Plantation Bitters. In
headache proceeding from indigestion or bil
iousness, or both, the stomachic aud anti-bil
ious properties of the preparation will soon
relieve the torture, hy removing its cause. If
the complaint is purely nervous—in other
words, if it has originated in the nervous sys
tem, and is not the result of sympathy, the
Bitters will be eqoally efficacious.

B. A. FAHNESTOCK’S
VERMIFUGE,
Whc is it that so many children die under
the age ol five years ? That a large proportion
of children die under that age has loug been a
subject of remark, and without a satisfactory
cause ascertained, it is certain.
Also, it is known that worms exist iu the
human system from its earliest infancy ; there
fore parents, especially mothers, who are more
constantly with their children, cannot be too
observing qf the first symptoms of worms ; for
so sorely aa they exist, can they be

removed from the most delicate infant, by the
timely use of
B. A. Fahnettoek'i Vermifuge.
It is perfectly harmless, contains no Mercury,
being a
Purely Vegetable Composition,
And may be administered with the UTMOST

Worm Confections, made more tor the pur
