Cooking and Courting.
TOM TO NKI>.
Dear Ned, no doubt you’ll besapriscd
Wheu you receive and read this letter;
I’ve railed against the marriage state,
But then, you see, I know no better.
I‘ve mot a lovely girl out here,
Her manner is—well—very winning ;
Wo’re soon to be —well, Ned, my dear.
I’ll tell you all from the beginning.
I went to ask her out to ride,
Last Wednesday—it was perfect weathei ,
She said she couldn't, possibly,
The servants had gone off together.
< Hibernians always rush away,
At eonsius’ funerals to be looking.)
Vies must be made, and she must stay,
She said, to do that branch of cooking
“ Oh, let me help you,” then I cried ;
“ I’ll be a cooker too—how jolly !
She laughed, and answered, with a smile,
“ All right! but you’ll repent your folly,
Tor I shall be a tyrant, sir,
And good hard work you’ll have to grapple ;
80 sit down there, and don’t you stir,
But take that knife aud pare that apple."
She rolled her sleeves above her arm—
That lovely arm so plump and rouuded ;
Outside, the raorniug sun shone bright;
Inside, the dough she deftly pounded,
Her little fingers sprinkled flour,
Aud rolled the pio-crust up in masses ;
I passed the most delightful bonrj
’Mid butter, sugar and molasses.
With deep reflection, her sweet eyes
Gazed on each pot and pan and kettle ;
She sliced her apples, filled her pies,
And then the upper crust did settle.
Iler rippling waves of golden hair.
11 one great coil were tightly twisted ;
But locks would break it, here and there,
And curl about where’er they fisted.
And then her sleeve came down, and I
Fastened it up—her hands ware doughy—
Oh it did take the longest lime,
Her arm, Ned, was so fair and snowy !
She blushed, and trembled, and looked shy;
Somehow, that made me ail the bolder ;
Her arch lips looked so red that I
Well-found be; head upon my shoulder.
We’re to be married, Ned, next month ;
Come and attend the wedding revels,
1 really thiuk that bachelors
Are the most miserable devils !
You’d better go for some girl s hand ;
And if you are uncertain whether
You dare to make a due demand.
Why, just try cooking pies together.
Relapsing Fever.— An epidemic thus
classed by the medical profession, a disease
heretofore unknown in the United States,
has, within the last two or three months,
made its appearance in the city of New
York, occurring among the most destitute
classes. A special to the Louisville Cou
rier-Journal gives the following account of
Its nativity, with a diagnosis of the dis
ease;
A number of the patients have been taken
to Believue Hospital, and there the fever,
in one or two instances, has been commu
nicated to the young physicians in attend
ance. Though unknown here, epidemics
of the disease have occurred frequently
abroad, in Germany, Russia, and the Brit
ish Isles. Like typhus, it is a famine fever,
occurring in times of general distress, aud
attacking in the first place the poorest
classes of the community. Those who
keep ap with the medical iiterature oT the
day have noted several months back that
this disease had made its appearance in
London, and that numerous cases had been
there received into the hospitals. Thence
it has doubtless been brought, in spite of
quarantine regulations, to our own coun
try. The complaint ordinarily begins with
a severe chill, followed by the usual phe
nomena of fever. These continue to in
crease, until after three, four, five, or some
times six days’ copious perspiration ter
minates the attack. The pat’eut remains
free of the fever, though often feeble aud
alliug. About the fourteenth day from the
commencement of the attack a second chill
supervenes, followed by phenomena similar
to those of the first attack. Sometimes a
HF, ttt.v ul-h" rn hitiChucu
with comparatively little danger, the mor
tality commonly not exceeding four or five
per cent. It . spreads by contagion like
other pestilences. When it once becomes
epidemic the casfs are by no means con
fined to the poor and needy.
Wonderful Physical Phenomena
lhat celebrated physicist, Dr. Priestly
while experimenting with electricity casii
al y illuminated one of his fingers so as to
make it penectly transparent. The curious
phenomenon was noted in his journal,
though it does not appear to have'exeited
any further inquiry. About two years a»o
under similar circumstances, the no less
celebrated philosopher, I)r. W. B. Richard
son, of London, illuminated nearly the
whole of his hand. This strange fact was
published in the London lAincei. and copied
generally in all the scientific journals
throughout the world.
Recently, Dr. Thomas Nicholson, of this
city, has pursued this wonderful fact still
further, and with considerable success By
the aid of the powerful incandescent light
of an oxy-hydrogen blow-pipe, or calcium
light, aud large magnifying lenses, he has
succeeded in completely illuminating the
whole hand, the body of* a frog, and other
substances. From the successful experi
meots already made, it would appear that
ior the illumination of the entire body it is
only necessary that the lights be sufficiently
vivid and the lenses sufficiently powerful.
It the whole mteral machinery of the human
system could thus be brought directly
under the inspection of medical practition
ers, the advantage to science and to humani
y would oe incalculable. Every person
will remember the semi-transparent appear
ance ot the hand when held between the eve
powerful light, and if the' vision be
* c ‘ e<l b y artificial appliances there is no
difficulty in imagining an immense increase
of our clairvoyant powers. We may thus
be enabled to discover structural and func
tional ailments which are now whollv hid
den from human sight, and apply remedies
h au exact knowledge of what we desire
to accomplish.

An Assassin Killed.— The Mariana

attempting to break arrest was killed by the

When the pure medicinal restorative, now bo wide
ly known a« WOLFE’S SCHIEDAM BCNAPPB,
was Introduced into the world under the indorsement
of 4,000 leading members of the medical profession,
some twenty year* ago, its proprietor was well aware
that he could not wholly escape the penalty attached
to all new and useful preparations. He therefore en
deavored to invest it with strongest possible safe
guards agaln-t counterfeiters, and to render all at
tempts to pirate it difficult aud dangerous. It was
submitted to distinguished chemists for anal} sis, and
pvonounced by them the purest spirits ever manufac
tured. Its purity and properties having beeu thus
ascertained, samples of the article were sent to ten
thousand physicians, Including all the leading prac
titioners in the United States, for puiposes ot ex
periment. A circular, reaues ing a trial of the prepa
paration and report of the result, accompanied each
specimen. Pour thousand of the most eminent med
ical men in tho Union promptly responded. Their
opinions of the article were unanimously favorable.
Such a preparation, they said, had long been wanted
by the profession, as no reliance could be placed on
the ordinary liquors of commerce, ail of which were
more or less adulterated, and therefore unfit for medi
cal purposes. The peculiar excellence and strength
of the oil of Juniper, which formed one of the principal
ingiedicnts of the Schnapps, together with an un
alloyed character of the alcoholic element, give it, in
the estimation of the faculty, a marked .superiority
over every other diffusive stimulant as a diuretic,
tonic and restorative.
The following are a few of the testimonials in favor
of the Schnapps:
Mr. Vdolpho Wolfe, 22 Beaver street, New York :
Dr a r Sir : I feel bound to say that I regard your
Schnapps as being in every respect pre-eminently
pure, and deserving of medical patronage. At all
events, it is the purest possible article of Holland
Gin, heretofore unobtainable, and as such may be
safely prescribed by physicians.

The examination has resulted in the conclusion that

the deleterious substances which are employed in the
adulteration of liquors.. I would not hesitate to use
myself, or to recommend to others, for medicinal pur

unobjectionable variety of Gin.
