The Fate of a Fighting Dog.
by Bin PELTOU.
A man, he owned a t<*rier florgr* ° ’
—bob-tailed, onery russ, , .„
And that there purp fft* that there fnan
In many an ugly musa;
For the man he was on Bts muscle,
And the dorg was on his bite,
So to kick that dorg-goned antmiie
Was snre to raise a fight.
A woman owned a Thomas cat,
That fit at fifteen pound;
And other cats got up and slid
When that there cat was round.
The man and his dorg came along one day,
Where the woman shb did dwell,
And the purp he growled ferociously,
Then went for the cat like hell.
He tried to chaw the neck ot the cat,
But the cat, he wouldn’t be chawed,
So he lit on the back of that taere dorg
And bit! and clawed! and clawed!
Oh ! the hair it flew ! and the purp he youled!
As the flaws weut into his hide,
And chunks of flesh were peeled from bis back ;
Then he flummuxed, and kicked, and died !
The man he ripped, and cussed, and swore,
And he gathered a big brickbat,
That he would be durned essentially
If he didn’t kill that cat!
But the woman allowed she’d be blessed If he
did!
And snatched up an old shot-gun,
Which she fired, and peppered his diaphragm
With bird-shot number one.
They toted him home ou a window blind,
And the doctor cured him up ;
But he never was known to fight again,
Or to own another purp.
Folks may turn up their snoots at this ryhrae,
I don’t care a enss for that!
All I wanted to show is, that fighting dorgs
May tackle the wrong Tom cat.
A Burtesgue Duel.
The New York Sun pokes fun at Mc-
Lean and Halstead:
There was a great wrangle on the grounds
about measuring off the distance. J. B.
McCullough was determined that he would
“ step off, but it was unanimously object
ed to by all the seconds of both principals
. that his legs were too short. The Fat
Contributor and his honorable friend had
made one pretty wide straddle, from Radi
cal correspondent to Democratic editor,
and ne thought he would do.
“D—.nit! Don’t point that pistol this
way in that careless manner, or I shall
withdraw from the case!” roared one of
the seconds, as Halstead flourished his pis
tol. McLean was practicing on the cock
and half-cock, so that when the time came
h%would be sure to make no mistake. I
just expected that somebody would get
hurt, and 1 began to feel certain it would
not be one of the principals either:
Finally, the seconds declared that every
thing was ready, and the principals took
their places. Asa compliment to McCul
lough, who felt rather sore over the short
feg busiuess, he was allowed to give the
word, which he did as follows:
“ Arre ye rkldy? Wan, two, three—
shoot! and be d—d to yez!
Simultaneously one pistol went off and
the other didn’t.
McLean struck the ground about half
way between the two, and a yard or so to
the right.
Halstead’s pistol did not “ go off.”
“ Who loaded that pistol ?” demanded •
he fiercely.
“ I did,” said one of the seconds, falter
ingly. And on investigation it turned out
that he had put in the cartridge (fixed am
munition) wrong end up.
“You d—cl fool! Don’t you know any
more about loading a pistol than that ?”
roared Halstead.
The poor man protested he thought that
was the right way, and wanted to know
why the devil they whittled the upper end
of the bullet to get a point, unless for the
convenience of loading, that it might be
got in easily? Nobody seemed able to an
swer this question.
McLean declared his honor was satisfied,
but Halstead swore like a pirate or Horace
Greeley at this, and demanded another shot
—or, at least, one shot. Said he felt it in
his bones that if he could only get a shot
he could knock the d—d daylights out of
eotnebody. The seconds by this time be
gan to feel as if they were veterans, and
they unanimously dooidod that the gentle
men should have one more shot. Had
eteitd’s seconds at first claimed that he
was one shot behind, and that McLean
should not fire until Halstead caught up;
but Halstead settled the business by shout
ing : “ If he will only shoot at me, so as to
make It a safe thing for me, he can shoot
away all day if he likes.” So the pistols
were carefully loaded and everything got
right this time. Each grasped his pistol
firmly, like a watchman's club, and waited
for the word. The explosion of both pis
tols was the signal for a yell from a wound
ed second on each side. One of Halstead’*
seconds had a bad flesh wound on the low
er end of the spine; and one of McLean’s
seconds was shot through the commissary
department.
This ended the fight.
Lemons for Fever. —When persons are
feverish and thirsty beyond what is natural,
indicated in some cases by a metallic taste
in the mouth, especially after drinking
water, or by a whitish appearance of the
_greater part of the surface of the tongue,
one of the best ** coolers,” Internal or ex
ternal, Is to take a lemon, ent off the top,
sprinkle over it some loaf sugar, working
it downward into the lemon with a spoon,
and then snek it slowly, squeezing the
lemon and adding more sugar as the acidity
increases from being brought up from a
lower point. Invalids with feverishness
may take two or three lemous a day In thus
manner, with the most marked benefit,
manifested by a sense of coolness, comfort
and invigoration. A lemon or two thus
taken at “ tea-time,” as an entire substitute
for the ordinary “supper” of Summer,
would give many a comfortable night’s
sleep, and ou awakening after rest, an in
vigoration, with an appetite for breakfast
to which they are strangers who will have
their cup of tea for supper, or “ relish” ami
cake and berries, or peaches and cream.

The Rf.tirkd Conductor —“ Gris,” of
the Cincinnati Times, relates of an old con
ductor promoted to train dispatcher as fol
lows : Habit was exceedingly strong with
the ex-condactor. As he sat in the office
he would start every time he heard a bell
ring and yell: “All aboard.” Then he
would go about the office at intervals and
try to collect fare from his assistants. We
dropped in casually one afternoon and Billy
wanted to know if we had a pass. He
couldn’t get accustomed to his new' posi
tion at all. He pined to lie again on the
road. One day he begged the boys to put
him through a collision, which they did to
hi* entire gratification. They tore his
clotiies nearly off, blacked his eyes, broke a
kerosene lamp over his head, and piled a
red-hot stove on top of him. Billy was In
an ecstaey of delight, and declared h 6
hadn’t enjoyed himself so much since he
had a bile.
The St. Louis Republican devotes four
columns to the great bridge across the
Mississippi at that point. It will be 2,230
feet in length, and will cost $4,496,953 —
three millions of which will be furnished by
St. Louis, and the remainder of the capital
comes from New York. The river part of
ihe bridge will rest on four Immense piers
constructed of granite, the top of which
will be fifty ffeefc above high watermark,
add the piers will be 145 to 174 in height
front their foundations up. The span of
the principal arch will be 515 feet, afid the
arches will be constructed of cast-steel.
The bridge will be a highway for eight rail
roads. It will be completed by the last of
next year.
A Sure Negro Shooter.— The Coryell
(Texas) Frontiersman, says that before Law
less, the desperado, was killed, and while
his captors were taking him to Waco, he
remarked that he had a six-shooter he
wished to sell. He said it had one v6fy re
markable trait—hold it which way you
would, and pull the trigger,, and down
would come a nigger. It had killed nig
gers enough to elect any carpet-bagger of
moderate “ managing* talent to Cbngress.
It fe said the reason why Lawless so ; {litter- j
ly hated negroes was that, in Missouri,
iome of his female relatives had been out
raged by them. Then and there he took
an oath never to let an opportunity pas*
When a negro could be killed.

Smith’s Tonic Syrup!
FOR THE CURB OF
AGUE AND FEVER
CR
CHILLS AND FEVER*
The proprietor of this celebrated medicine just
ly claims for it a superiority over all ever offered to
the public for the tafe, certain, lpee4y and permanent
cure of Ague audl Fever, or Chills and Fever, whether
of short or loug standing. He refers to the entire
Western and Southwestern country to hear him test!
mony to the truth of the assertion that in no case
whatever will it fail to cure, If the directions are
strictly followed and carried out. In a great many
cases a single dose has been sufficient for a cure, and
whole families have been cured by a single bottle
with a perfect restoration of the genera] health. It
is, however, prudent, and iu every case more certain
w cure, if its use is continued in smaller doses for t
week or two after the disease has been checked, more
especially in difficult and long standing cases.—
Usually, this medicine will not require any aid to
keep the bowels in good order ; should the patient
however, require a cathartic medicine after having
taken three or four doses of the Tonic, a single dose
of BULL’S VEGETABLE FAMILY PILLS wi
be sufficient.

TO MY UNITED STATES AND WORLD
WIDE READERS.
1 have received many testimonials fiom profession
al and medical men, as my almanac, and various pub
lications have shown, all of which are genuine. The
following from a highly educated and popular physi
cian in Georgia, Is certainly one of the most sensible
communications I have every received. Dr. C’i.kmkht
knows exactly what be speaks of, and his testimony
deserves to be written in letters of gold. Hear what
the Doctor says of BULL’S WORM DESTROYER.
Villanow, Walker Cochty, Ga. /
June 29th, 1868. j
Da. Johh Bdll— Dear Sir : I have recently given
your “ Worm Destroyer ” several trials, and find It
wonderfully efficacious. It has not failed in a single
instance to have the wtehed-for effect. I am doing a
pretty large country practice, and have daily use tor
some article of the kind. lam free to confess that J
know of no remedy recommended by the ablest au
thors that is so certain and speedy in its effects. On
the contrary they are uncertain in the extreme. My
object in writing you is to find out upon what terms
I can get the medicine directly from you. If I can
get it uj>on easy terms, I shall use a great ileal of it.—
I am aware that the use of such articles is contrary to
the teachings and practice of agreal i- ajority of til'
regular line of M. D.’s, but I see no just cause or good
sense in discarding a remedy which we know to be
efficient, simply because we may be ignorant of H
combination. For my part, I shall make it a rule to
use all and any means t« alleviate suffering human
ity which I may lie able to-command —not hesi
taring because some o< e more ingenious than myself
may have learned its effects first, and secured the sole
right to secure that knowledge. However, I am by
no means an advocate or supporter of the thousands
of worthless nostrums that llood the country, that
purport to cure all manner of disease to which fc u
man flesh is heir. Please reply soon, and inform me
of y our best terms.
