State Items.
Mr. Taylor, 70 years of age, died at Pu
laski Factory on Tuesday.
Fewer Georgians have applied tor relief
from political disabilities than from any
other Southern State.
The fa rows in the section of Covington
are harvestin': the wheat crop, which is re
ported as having never been better.
Griffin has recently ordered anew steam
lire engine, from the SiLsby Works, Seneca
Falls, New York, of the third class size.
The Dispatch knows of no town in the
State where a competent, steady and in
dustrious tinner could do better than in :
Hawkinsville.
Governor Mullock has reduced his re
wards for murderers from SI,OOO to S2OO.
For a partv who beat another, however,
he offers SSOO.
On Wednesday, in Atlanta, twenty-seven
lots on Marietta street were sold at
enormous prices. Lots averaging 25 by 52
brought $125, that is about $2,000 an
acre.
The Eatouton Dress says much of the
wheat crop has been havested, turning out
finely. The heads are large and well tilled,
borne anticipate getting a yield of forty to
fifty bushels to the acre.
The employees of the Custom House at
Savannah not having been paid up for their
work, and needing funds to pay their board,
on Thursday placarded the building with
“ This House for Sale.” No sale reported.
One of the oldest and most intelligent
citizens of Twiggs county gives it as his
opinion to the Macon Telegraph that the
corn planted in that county, allowing a
fair yield, will not supply the people to
Christmas.
Two negroes, Aleck Boatwright and Joe
Gonaway, near Hawkinsville, had a <litTi
cnltv about a colored damsel on Friday
night last, which ended iu the shooting and
killing of thelatter by the former. Boat
wright escaped.
According to the Intelligencer Atlanta j
must, he pretty well sold out At a recent j
sale of lots there, a wag said : “ These real
estate agents must be hard up for some- I
thing to sell—d—n me, if they liavn’t pulled
np the railroad track, and aiut selling the ;
land between the cross-ties.”
A fire occurred in the pickery of the Ma-1
cou Cotton Factory, on Thursday. Its
early discovery, and the promptness of
Mechanics’ Fire Company, prevented a
great conflagration. Damage very light.
From the Columbus Sun we learn that
the grand jury of Muscogee county has
found true bills against the Ordinary and
the negro pastor, Rtjcker; the first for is !
suing a license, the second for marrying a 1
white man to a negro woman. The crime j
is a misdemeanor punishable by fine and
imprisonment.
The Savannah Republican says Mr. John
A Staley proposes to purchase Hutchin
son’s Island for the stun of ten thousand I
dollars, and iu case the City Fathers shall
accept his proposal, he will make improve
ments which cannot fail to promote the
health of the city. His intention is to sur
round the whole island with a dike of suf
ficient height to prevent the tide from over
flowing the grounds, find to intersect it
with a sufficient number of ditches to
thoroughly drain it, and to get rid of the
surplus water by means of pumps to be
driveu by wind-mills. By this means he
will b« enabled to make one of the finest
garden spots in America, and. at the same
time destroy a fruitful source of poisonous
gases.
The Dawson Journal says: We are sur
prised and exceedingly regret to hear the
reports from a large'po. 'ion of Calhoun
and this (Terrell) county, as to the extent
of the damage done by reason of the con
tinued drought. Fully two-thirds of the
area of these two counties have not had
a season since the first of April. It is
thought that corn is too small to make
one-half a crop, under the most favorable
seasons. But for the bad stand, cotton has
time to recuperate and make a medium
crop. The best planters tell us it is Im
possible to make a good crop of either corn
or cotton in these dry localities.
P. B.—Since the above was in type we
have had a most delightful ram, and from
the manner in which the clouds came loom
ing up from every quarter we hope it was
pretty general.

the turner and gardener can conquer and ex
terminate this great pest by agricultural prn
cess, with but little more than the ordinary
labor of cultivating land, I offer to any one
ilesiring the information, and who will pledge
themselves not to divulge the secret for any
consideration to a other, to give them the plan
on receipt of FIVE DOLLARS—obligating
myself in every ease to return the money, with
interest, if a failure.
This plan I discovered by actual operation,
and have found it to be successful, and needs
only to be presented to the intelligent m.tid to
obtain favor and adoption. 1 do not hesitate
to say that a hand by my process can tend at
least half the usual quantity ot land of very b .and
nut grass the first, and all that a hand can do
anywhere the nest year.
What I call nut grass is a small black cocoa
looking nut with numerous fibrous roots, and
having a main one shooting out, forming an
other nut and blade of grass These roots and
the bottom ot the blade resemble the young
cane root.

should be the basis of treatment in all chronic
