Memorial Poem.
Composed by John O. Crown, and read on
the occasion of the floral decoration ol the
graves of Confederate dead, lying in Mt. Olivet
Cemetery, Frederick, Md., which took place on
Saturday, June 4th, 1870.
Here they rest, the named and nameless,
They who fought with spirits tameless,
Fought and bled and died to conquer Freedom
lor their cherish’d land—
Meeting, when in life, the rattle
Os the dreadful, mnrd’rous battle,
With a courage and devotion nnsurpasß and by
Spartan band.
Here reposes some dear brother—
Here the hope of some fond mother
Here a husband and a father all are resting
side bv side,
And they’ll never more awaken.
Though by warring hosts be shaken
All the land, and waves of carnage roll and
surge with bloody tide.
Better ’tis their warfare’s over—
Better ’tis they’re neath the cover
That our mother earth so kindly over all her
children throws,
Than to feel the desolation,
Hate, and utter degradation
Heap’d upon surviving comrades by their un
relenting foes.
Vainly gave they of the measure
Given them, the priceless treasure,
Life, the grande t, noblest off’ring on one’s
altar-land laid down,
Bad it is this rich libation.
Pour’d out for their cherish’d nation—
Now so prostrate—could not save her from the
sconrge and thorny crown.
God defend her in this hour!
God defend her from the power
That is leveling its batteries of hate against her
form !
Though at ev’ry pore she’s bleeding,
Yet no humble, spaniel pleading
Issues from her tips for shelter in this awful
midnight storm !
•Here they rest, where no denials
Fill their hearts with sharpest trials —
Wl ere the trumpet calls are silent, and where
banners never wave—
lu a bivouac unbroken,
Where commands are never spoken,
Nor where weary pickets nightly guard the
slumbers of the brave.
Up from sorrow’s fount are welling
Thrilling mem’rieß that are telling
How they parted with home’s loved ones,
whom they never met again—
How they wall’d their sunny regions
With their breasts, and drove the legions
Os oppression back, ere falling mid ihe war
storm’s leaden rain.
Furl’d forever is their banner,
Which they rais’d to shield their manor—
Which in triumph oft they planted on the
heights all cannon-crown’d ;
Never, though, shall fade the glory
That adorns its brief, sad story,
While is heard the Sbeuaudoah and Potomac’s
music-sound.
Here, then, where they rert so lowly,
With a purpose pure and holy.
And to cheer ihe lonely, strickeu hearts, from
whence all hope has fled.
Sadly gathers gentle woman—
Who is more divine than human
In her love—to scatter mem’ry blossoms o’er
these gallant dead!
Southern mothers, cease your weeping !
Stranger hands protect yonr sleeping
Children’s far off resting places, shielding
them from rude decay ;
Though we cannot heal your sorrow,
You may consolation borrow
From the fragrant floral tribute carpetiug your
dead to day.

she bought herself anew bonnet, shawl,

her identity with the hitherto shabby and
hopeless old maid. Just as she was walk

turned upon her, the choir commenced an
anthem, the burden of which was, “ Hal

high dudgeon,exclaiming: “Hardly knew

What I call nut grass is a small black cocoa

w lIY is it that so many children die under
the age of five years ? That a large proportion
of children die uuder that age has long been a
subject ot remark, and without a satisfactory
cause ascertained, it is certain.
Also, it 16 known that worms exist in the
human system from its earliest, infancy ; there
fore parents, especially mothers, who are more
constantly with their children, caunol be too
observing of the first symptoms of worms ; for
so surely as they exist, can they be
SAFELY AND CERTAINLY

timely use of
B. A. Fahnestock's Vermifuge.
It is perfectly harmless, contains no Mercury,

Ayer’s Ague Cure,
For Fever and Ague, Intermittent Fever,
Chill Fever, Homittont Fever, Dumb
Ague, Periodical or Bilious Fever, &c.,
and indeed all the affections which arise
from malarious, marsh, or miasmatic
poisons.
No one remedy is louder called
BH for by the necessities of the
Ba Jr . American people Mian a sure and
safe cure for Fever and Ague.
1 isill / Sll, 'b we are niuv enabled to offer,
-*L ytas* with a perfect certainty that it
Jf ~ will eradioato the disease, and
W with assurance,founded on proof,
that no harm can arise from its nse in any quantity.
That which protects li-oin or prevents this disor
der must be of immense service in the communi
ties where it prevails. Prevention is better than
cure, lor the patient escapes the risk which he
must run in violent attacks of this baleful distem
per. This “ ('run ” expels the miasmatic poison of
Ff.Vek and Ague from the system, and prevents
the development of the disease, if taken on the first
approach of its premonitory symptoms. It is not
only the best remedy ever yet discovered for this
class of complaints, but also the cheapest. The
large 'quantity we supply for a dollar brings it
within the reach of everybody; and in bilious dis
tricts, where Feyeh and Ague prevails, every
body should have it, and use it freely both for cure
and protection, ft is hoped this price will place it
within die reach of all the poor as well as the
rich. A groat superiority of this remedy over any
oilier ever discovered lyr the speedy and certain
cure of Intermittontß is, Hint it contains no Quinine
or mineral; consequently it liroduces no quinism
or other injurious effects whatever upon the con
stitution. Those cured by it are left as healthy a»
if they had never had the. disease.
Fever and Ague is not alone the consequence of
the miasmnt ic, poison. A great variety of disorders
arise from its irritation, among which are Neural
gia, Rheumatism, Gout, Headache, Blindness,
Toothache.liarache, Catarrh. Asthma, Palpitation,
Painful Affection ot the spleen, Hysterics, Pain in
the Bowels, Colic, Paralysis, and derangement of
the Stomach, all el which, when originating in this
cause, put on the intermittent type, or become
periodical. This “ Ccre” expels the. poison from
flic blood, aipl consequently cures them all alike.
It is an iuvaluable protection to ittnnlgrants and
persons travelling or temporarily residing in the
malarious districts- If taken occasionally or daily
while exposed to llu- infection, that will lie excreted
from the system, and cannot accumulate in suffi
cient quantity to ripen into disease. Hence it is
even more, valuable for protection than cure; and
few will ever suffer from Intermittent* if they
avail themselves 01' the protection this remedy af
fords.
For Liver C*mptMnfs\ arising from torpidi
ty of the Liver, it is an excellent remedy, stimulat

“ BAD BLOOD.”
“ The Life is the Blood.”
From it we derive our strength, beauty
and mental capabilities. It is the centre oi onr
being, around which revolves all that makes
existence happy. When this source is corrupt
ed the painful effects are visible in many
shapes prominent among which is
SCROFULA.
This is a taint or infection of the human or
ganism, and probably >;lo one is wholly free
from it. It exhibits itself in various shapes—
is Ulcers and Sores, Decayed Bones, Diseased
Scalp, Sore Eyes, Weak and Diseased Joints,
St. Vitus’ Dance, Foul Discharges from the
Nostrils, Eruptions, Glandular Swellings,
Throat Affections, Rheumatism, Heart Affec
tions, Nervous Disorders, Barrenness, Disor
ders of the Womb, Dropsy, Syphilitic Affec
tions, Liver Complaint, Salt Rheum, Dyspep
sia, Neuralgia, Loss of Manhood and General
Debility.
It has been the custom to treat these dis
eases with Meihmry aod other Mineral sub
stances, which, though sometimes producing a
cure, often prove injurious and entails misery
in alter life. The long known injurious prop
erties of these so-called alteratives and puri
fiers has led the pbilantliropical man of science
to explore the arena of nature, the result of
which has been the discovery ot vegetable pro
ducts which possess the power of eradicating
these taints from the blood.
