WEDNESDAY MORNING. JUNE 16,1870
|(Jorre»pon fence New York World.
West Point.
Wkbt Point Uotkl, June 10.
To-day the examination of the graduating
class at the Military Academy was finish
el. In the forthcoming report of the Board
of Visitors it will doubtless be pronounced
"eminently satisfactory.” A lady acquaint
ance of mine, lately from Washington, who
visited the library this morning while the
cadets were being put through the exami
nation in ordnance and gunnery, gave me
a somewhat less flattering account of that
part of it.
THE CADETS IINDEK FIRE.
“In Washington, yon know,” said this
lady, “ it was always prudent to carry a
book to the Capitol, as there, it sometimes
happened, nothing interesting was going
oil, and the time could be »>ettqr improved
by reading than by a vain effort to catch a
ray of common sense from the Senatorial
discussions. The force of habit incliued
me to carry a liqok this njfOfning,. but
seemed a shame to so mistrust the capacity
of the picked young men of tne nation,
questioned upon eveu she dryest topics by
eminent professors, to make a haM" hfiur in
teresting. It was at least presum.able
that these yonng gentlemen knew some
thing about ordnance and military tac
tics, and would answer the questions pro
pounded with intelligence and promptness.
To be sure, the questions were iced on the
lips of the professors ; they sounded cold
and brittle enough to congeal the blood ifi
any woman’s heart. But cadets are so)
dlers; soldiers are expected to be cold
blooded, and not to mind such things; and,
when the first cadets stepped on to the
platform, I really thought he looked con
lldent enough not to mind anything. But
when the first question was asked, he be
came rigid as the bronze statue of Gen.
Sedgwick in the grounds. He could not
well speak at first; when he did, he pro
ceeded to talk incoherently of the ‘thing’
over the ‘ percussion cap ’ There was a
chance for the examining officer to nip the
cadet in the bud. He availed himself of it,
and proceeded to quench the rest of the ex
planation by asking the cadet, sternly,
what the ‘ thing ’ meant? After pleadiiig
with the ceiling, thorough puzzled, anxious
eyes, the poor, boy finally had to say, ‘I
don’t rememberand from that moment he
seemed to forget everything. He felt sure
that pretty girl he had flirted with (to his
sorrow) last evening on the piazza, was
smiling behind her fan. The officer who
questioned him broke off the point of his
pencil making notes of his mistakes, and
gave a significant glance at his neighbor
when he dismissed the cadet with sarcastic
brevity. I wanted to box that offl
cer’s ears. He was haudsome though,
but young enough to have remembered
his own shortcomings at examination,
and to have shown some mercy to his
victims. A cadet who had drawn his dia
gram on the black board, and rubbed it
out and commenced it again, and altered it
as often as the minister’s wig was clipped
to suit his parishioners, had the satisfac
tion at last of hearing it pronounced all
wrong. Ooe cadet after another was called
up and badgered with questions, failing to
answer which correctly, he pined to see
the cruel beauties seated around the room
bend to each other with merry whispers.
1 am told that it is not the number but the
Importance of the cadet’s mistakes that
couuts against him. That is a fortunate
thing for him; for it seemed to me they ali
made enough little ones to sink their hopes.
As they came up, there was an expression
on almost all their faces which meant that
they hoped to do well, and that
I ’Twere well it were done quickly
bat when they came down, the expression
had changed to one of relief, often mixed
'rttn piteous apprehension.” iOH^T

THE LIVING MACHINE.
Injure the main spring <fa watch and every por
tion of he works becomes disordered. The bumau
stomach is to the human system what that elastic
pieca of metal is to a chronometer. It influences the
action of the other organs, and controls, to a certain
extent, the whole liviDg machine. The comparison
may be carried further; for as the weakness or other
itnperftclions of the main spring is Indicated on the
face of the time piece, so also is the -weakness or other
disorder of the stomach betrayed by the laco of the
invalid. The complexion is sallow or faded, the eyes
arc deficient in lu* re and intelligence, and there is a
worn, anxious expression in the whole countenance
which ell as plainly as written words could do, that
the qhkat nourishing organ, whose office it is to
minister to the wants of the body, and to sustain and
reuew ail its parts, is not performing its duty. It re
quires renovating and regulating, and to accomplish
this end Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters may bo truly
s.iid to be thr onb thing nkhdvui.. The broken
main spring of a watch may be leplacad hy anew
one, but the stomach can only be repaired and
strengthened, and this is one cf the objects of the
famous vegetable restorative which for eighteen years
has been waging a successful contest with dyspepsia
in all climatrß. Asa specific for indigestion, it
stands alone. When the resources of the j liarma
copieia have been exhausted, without, at best, doing
more thuu mitigating the complaint, a course of this
wholesome and palatable, yet powerful, stomachic
effects a perfect and permanent i-ure. in all cases of
dyspepsia the .iver is more or less disordered, and
upon this important gland, as well as upon the stom
ach and bowels, the Bitters act with singular dis
tinctness, regulating and lelnvigorating every secre
tive and assimilating organ on which bodily and

Koskoo Cures Scrofula in its Worst Forms.
From A. W. Mills, a prominent and well

No. 11 Main street, Norfolk, Va., September 16, 1869.
Dr. Lawrence— Dear Sir: Your Koskoo
has worked wonders in my family. My daugh

childhood. She lost thirty-one pieces of bone
from her aukle, several from her arm, besides
having ulcers in several parts of the body.—
Whilst in (his condition she commenced taking
your Koskoo— it acted like a charm on her; un
der its use the ulcers gradually healed, and her
general health greatly improved. It certaiuly
saved her much suffering, and perhaps her life.
X regard Koskoo a specific tor all scrofulous
affections. Your Koskoo also cured my wife
of dyspepsia, lrom which she suffered greatly.
She is now in better health than she has been in
five years.
With the highest regards,
I am gratefully yours, Ac.,
