SATURDAY MORNING. JUNE 18,1870
fFrom the Montgomery Ma.l.
Stanton Switches Selma Off.
It Is generally supposed that the Selma
and Meridian Railroad is a unit from Selma
to Meridian. This is not correct. At
Fork, on the Alabama line, about twenty
miles this side of Meridian, the Selma and
Meridian Hoad ceases. The t wenty miles
hevood is a link of Stanton’s Alabama and
Chattanooga Railroad. The Selma and
Meridian Railroad is running on Its old
'■’"dale, and the connection between the
two roads has been broken by Stanton. It
has not only been broken, but the Demopo-
Ih hlzponerd is reliably informed that Stan
ton, through his agent, has peremptorily
refused to connect with the Selma Road
under any circumstances. Stanton says
If the Selma Road changes its present
schedule so as to meet his trains at York,
that he will make immediately another
change to defeat this object. Thus it will
he seen, the great New England Developer
of Industrial Resources has switched Selma
out into the cold, and left her vegetating
on the bank of the river, amusing herself
shooting musqnetoes and gazing raelan
cholically upon the rising walls of that
hotel. Montgomery sympathizes somewhat
with Selma, for the break in the gap at
York will send up to Grand Junction a
ifood deal of Western travel which should
come this way. However, the New Or
leaus travel will be compelled to come by
Mobile, and the Central Mississippi travel
will shoot up to Elyton, on Stanton’s road,
and come down to Montgomery on the
south and north. In either event, Selma
becomes the centre of a railroad system,
Selma being the hub, and the tire of the
wheel being her railroad system.
Stanton says the reason he has switched
off Selma is because John Hardy, Busteed’s
President of the S. and M. Road, is so no
toriously unscrupulous he is afraid that if
a connection at York is permitted, Hardy
will steal all his traius and Busteed will
decree that the theft is perfectly legitimate
In admiralty. What makes the matter
more complicated and heart rending is that
Hardy says the same thing about Stanton.
The only way we see for the good people
of Selma to get that hotel completed and
to get a ciose connection at York is to
open the eyes of the negroes to the enormi
ties perpetrated by the Alex. White and
Hardy clique of barnacles to put in a
decent City Council, to throw Hardy out
of the Receivership, to unite with Mont
gomery in helping Mr. Wadley, of the Geor
gia Central, to buy up Stanton’s little sec
tion or to tunnel under it, and thus to get
Selma once more on the highway of pro
gress and civilization. Alex. White’s talk
about progress and material resources is
all bosh. It has resulted just as we expect
ed it would result, in putting a man whom
Hen. Swayne stigmatized as the most rapa
cious robber he ever met with, into the
i‘residency of a leading road and in filling
th -e pockets of Stanton with so ranch money
that he switches a leading commercial em
porium out of the way as though it were a
mere wood pile. Thus much iias White’s
uew Radicalism already done for Selma.—
How much more will it do ?
Wadley is the man to untie that knot.
He has already marched from Savannah to
belmv He is now cooking rations for the
march to Vicksburg. Stautou must get
°ot of the way or be run over.
Eagle and Phcenix Items.— This Com
pany received, on Monday, three handsome
(y gotten up diplomas from the Louisiana
State Fair—first, for the best cotton and
woolen goods ; second, best sewing thread;
third, best cotton blankets made in the
Southern States. Medals were awarded by
‘he same Fair for these goods last year.
The company is turning out anew
W>ric for gents’ ami boys’ pants and coats,
belug made of a French sample recently
sent out. The goods is heavy twills, of
white and blue colors, and appears supe
rior to anything in its line. The bolt we
saw Is better then the French sample and
cheaper. In France it is worth 40 cents In
gold; here only 33 cents in currency.
Between 400 and 500 hands now find em
ployment at mills No. 1 and 2, which num
ber will be Increased. First class lady em
ployees earn from $lO to sl2 per week, and
others according to their efficiency. This
ahows that energetic and intelligent labor

THE LIVING! MACHINE.
Injure the main spring <fa watch and every por

stomach is to the human system what that elastic
piece of metal is to a chronometer It influences the
action of the other organs, and contiols, to a c rtain
extent, the whole living machine. The comparison
may be carried furttier; for as the weakness or other
imperfections of the main spring is indicated on the
face of the time piece, so also is the weakness or other
disorder of the stomach betrayed by the face of the
invalid. The complexion is sallow or faded, the eyes
are delicient in lustre ar.d intelligence, and there is a
worn, anxious expression in the whole countenance
which -ell as plainly as written words could do, that

strengthened, and this is one of the objects of the
famous vegetable restorative which for eighteen years
has been waging a successful contest with dyspepsia
in all climates. Asa specific for indigestion, it
stands alone. When the resources of the pharma*
copfleia have been exhausted, without, at best, doing
more than mitigating the complaint, a course of this
wholesome and palatable, yet powerful, stomachic
effects a perfect and permanent cure. In all cases of
dyspepsia the liver is more or less disordered, and
