Condition op Affairs in Uouth Caiio
ijna —The Charier, ton Xem, of yesterday,
contains tin: following special dispatches
from Washington and Columbia:
Washington, Oclobrr 26;—To-day,, a
delegation sent by Governor Scot#, consist
in" of State Treasurer Parker aud State
Auditor Tomlinson, bad an interview with
President Grant.
The President, after listening to the ac
counts given by Messrs. Parker and Tom
linson of the disturbance at Laurens, re
plied that he had at ready notified Governor
Scott, bv telegraph, that lie should have all
the troops he wanted for South Carolina.
Senator I'. .1- Robertson, who was also
sent on by Governor Scott, urges that, more
troops be furnished, and charges that the
troubles arise from the attempts of the Re
formers to destroy the ballot boxes.
OotiTjMBTA, October 26—Rumors which
reach this city from the conn tics of Union
and Chester indicate that the Laurens
troubles are extending towards Chester.
Governor Scott gives farther assurances
ot his intention to’ disarm all the State
troops, but, the order has not yet been
issued. • y
Grant's Lats. Present. —The corre
spondent of the Baltimore Gazette speaks
ot a hog that was sent to the President,
from somewhere in the West, by some
“toil” admirer ot that functionary. Here
is the writer’s account of the animal and its
journeyings:
“ It was sent to his Excellency, as ap
pears upon a review of the tuasa of papers
before me, from Kentucky, through the
Post Office Department, aud was returned
through the same source to Jesse Grant, at
Covington, not many miles from where it
was pigged, at an expense to’ the United
states of some $2,000. And this is what is
called “economy ” in the Radical journals,
if I am pushed upon this point, I will give
names, and am rather anxious to ba
‘ pushed.’ ”
SnoT.—We understand a difficulty oc
curred at Georgetown, Ga., on Monday
last, between R. J. Moses, Jr., a young
lawyer from this city, and Maj J. T. Flewef
len, a planter of Quitinau county, In which
the former was shot and slightly wounded

About a Baby Show.
HOW THE MATTER WAS MANAGED IN MEM
pg[^—.YWRNTY'FODR mothers compete
FOR THE PRIZE.
To give an idea of how a “ Baby Show”
is done up, we copy the following from the
Memphis Avalanche , of the 15th instant,
describing a baby show recently held in
that city : It may be that the numerous
doting mothers and paps, of our city will
desire to get up a similar parade of infantry,
as a sequel to our present grand exposition
of agricultural products, mechanical in
genuity and art creations, hence we present
the following schedule upon which it might
be run:
Alter nurses aud babies had all been col
lected in rear of the judges’ stand, the
Secretary called them into the arena iu'the
order in which they had been entered, and
the babies belonging to the twenty-seven
ladies were carried into the ring for the in
spection of the bachelor judges. Ranged
in front, of the northern grand stand stood
the nurses, with their little charges in their
arms or in petite carriages, aud the sight
was a peculiar one. There were babies of
all kinds, and of all ages, that is to say. of
all months under twelve, for Wheeler,
Dickens & Cos., in presenting the beautiful
little perambulator, had distinctly bar
gained that it shou'd be presented “to the
finest baby under one year g'd on exhibi
tion at this Fair.” The blue-eyed blondes
were in the majority, although Hmre were
many brunettes, dark-colored and placid.
The boys seemed to be livelier than the
girls, and laughed and “ crowed” in a man
ner that was delightful to behold. 4 flie

mammas tried every subterfuge to make
their babies smile, laugh and crow, aud
sundry comfits and cakes were called into
requisition. One blur-eyed lad of about ten
months was very attractive, and Ids iff >rts
to swallow a scarlet worsted ball four
inches in diameter excited universal ad
miration. The task of the judges was no
ordinary one, but they faced the music like
inert, and gazed the juveniles nearly out of
countenance while examining their “points.”
Health, strength, “ lieli.” and good looks
were all taken into account, and the judges
' moved silent ly ami steadily along the line,
their every motion and every word being
eagerly watched by nurse, papa and mamma
.Some of the babes started at the portly
figure of Mr. Hamilton, as he marched at
the head of his forces, and looked as if they
had a slight glimmering of what it was ail
about, and they looked up smilingly, while
others presented sombre faces, with tears
in their eyes and mouths all a pout. It
was indeed an interesting eight, and many
broke through the rope-guards and eagerly
rushed into the ling, as if to look upon a
baby was not an everyday occurrence..
After the judges had carefully scanned the
groups, they retired for consnUatio.it, and
‘then ordefed the following babies-, accord
ing to numbers as given above, to be sepa
rated from the general group : Nos. 3,4, 6,
19, 25 and 26, belonging lespeclively to
Mrs. J. G. Johnson, Mrs. R. IV. Amalie,
Mrs. John Mi chell, Mrs. L. McGuire, Mrs.!
CV II Cavan and Mrs. Joseph Mnsso. The
judges took another fond leak at the fortu
nate half dozen, and again retired for con
sultation. They seemed to have nearly all
agreed on the same baby, for the consulta
tion was brief, and Dr. Perkins, the super
intendent, of the arena, came forward, took
little Mary Ainslie in his arms, attached
to her right arm the blue ribbon, placed
her in the prize baby carriage, and Col. J.
(J. Ballentine, grand marshal, gallantly
wheeled the lucky little ledy round the
arena, amid the huzzas of the assembled
multitude, while Hie unlucky babies were
carried* .solemnly out of the ring. After
the prize baby had been shown all around,
it. was taken in front of the grand stand,
hut the noise around proved too much for
its nerves, and the grand marshal jnd his
assistant shouted lustily for the nurse. So
ended ttiis great baby show of the Fair.
Mr. Bowers lives near Columbus, Ohio,
and has cultivated a consuming affection
for pets. Among other pleasing attractions
which this peculiar characteristic has add
ed to Mr. Bowers’ homestead is a bear.
Mr. Bowers had a six years’ old son the
other dav, but the little fellow attempted
to establish fraternal ret ttions with the
other pet, and the creature, in a sort of
playful eestacy, reduced tlie child to fiddle
■strings, or something of about equal di
un-nsions The Bowers that knew that
bear will know him no more. In fact, Mr.
Bowers can’t lwar pets of any kind any
more, and would probably dispose of his
choice collection of panthers, polecats, rat
terriers, rattlesnakes and things at a ridicu
lous sacrifice. .

Ayer’s Sarsaparilla,

The reputation this ex

is derived from its cures,

sp cases of Scrofulous dis
nr ,m ease, where the system
PO seemed saturated with
Y .1 corruption, have been
r'i£\ „ purified and cured by it.
... Scrofulous affections and
, ' Sf ’ disorders,which were ag
gravated by the scrofu
-1 lons contamination until
they were painfully afflicting, have been radically
cured in such great numbers in almost every sec
tion of the country, that the public scarcely need to
j>e informed of its’ virtues or uses.
Scrofulous poison is one of the most destructive
enemies of ouf race. Often, this unseen and uufeit
tenant of the organism undermines the constitution,
and invites the attack of enfeebling or lata! diseases,
without excitinga suspicion of its presence. Again,
it. seems to breed infection throughout tire body, and
then, on some favorable occasion, rapidly develop
into one or other of its hideous forms, either on tho
surface or among tho vitals. In the latter, tuber
cles may be suddenly deposited in lire lungs or
he%rt, or tumors formed in the liver, or it snoxfs
its presence by eruptions on the skin, or foril ulcer
ations on some part, of the body. Hence the occa
sional use of a bottle of this Sarsaparilla is ad
visable, even when no active symptoms of disease
appear. Persons afflicted with tho following com
plaints generally find immediate relief, and, at
length, cure, by the use of this SARSAPARfL
LA: St. Anthony's Lire, Rose or FrysipeluS,
Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Rinywoi in.
Sore Ryes, Sore Lars, and other eruptions oi

more concealed forms, as Dyspepsia, Dropsy,
