Perils of The Sea.
New Rnn>FOßt>, Mass , Nov. 14, 1871.
The advanced-guard of the wrecked
whalemen from the Arctic regions arrived
home about seven o’clock this evening, hav

twenty five, captains and officers, in all, are

New York by the Pennsylvania Central,

Contest, left the party at New London,

start immediately for hishomein Scotland.
Conn. They are all in most excellent spirits,
ajd were met at the depot by a number of
friends who were on the look-out for their
arrival, and were warmly greeted by all
Casses. The people of New Bedford nearly
all know either b.v their own personal ex
perience or from the lips of some near rela
live or friend, what are the hardships of an
Arctic whaling man’s life, even in the most
favorable of seasons, and they can realize
better than the outside world to what ex
tent the sufferings have been angmented by
the disastrous events of last September. The
gentlemen above named all live in New
Bedford, except Mr. Luce, whose home is in
Nantucket, and they at once repaired to
their homes.
INTERVIEW WITH A POST CORRESPONDENT.
Your Correspondent had leugthy inter
views with the Captain and Mr. Lace and
Mr. Frazer, all of whom gave very intelli
gent accounts of the disasters, which have
lieen in a great measure forestalled by the
telegraph and mail, except personal inch
dents, of which 1 shall endeavor to give
y«u a brief summary. The season had been
an unfortunate one from the beginning;
whales were scarce and ice plenty. Catch
ing was aader discouraging circumstances.
After the ice had set off from the shore the
fleet moved up northerly and the whallDg
prospects began to grow better and better
Contrary to all former experience, the wind
blew strongest from the westward every
few days, and won id set the ice back to
ward the shore, threatening to block up
the narrow passage of water between the
beach and the great bank of ice to the west
ward. At last the wind setin more strong
ly to the shore, and the currents became so
rapid, the moving of the ice toward the
beach so constant and overpowering, that
all hopes of escape were abandoned. Os
the consultations and the decisions, the
crushing oi the Comet, the Roman, the
Awashonke, and others, these dispatches
have given full particulars already.
A TIIHIUJNO NARRATIVE.
The moment at last came, says (.'apt
Dean, when abandonment was absolutely
necessary, that hnman life might be sub
Feted to uo farther hazards. Two boats
from every ship, manned by six men each
and loaded with provisions and clothing,
started for the remainder of the fleet be
vend Icy Cape, fall ninety miles away. Im
agine the thermometer so far below zero
that the scale failed to tell the point where
the mercury would stand if it had a chance,
the wind blowing from the northwest, and
sending acres ot ice at the rate of several
miles an hour toward shore, massing
around the ships and threatening to beach
them at any moment, and in all thisabont
four hundred men rowing seventy-five or
eighty miles in small boats. A pen picture
<>f the ice as it closed round the ships is
scarcely possible, even with the thrilling
narrative of four eye-witnesses as an aid.
The mind cannot realize the grandeur of
the moving mass as it floated along on the
urrcnt. now dashing against some smaller
portion which hail been floating along at
Its owo sweet will, and crushing it into ten
thousand fragments which piled one upon
another with a horrible crash, and dissolv
ed Into the great mass which had forced it
asunder. The sonnd of the ice floes crash
ing together can be likened to naught else
°nthe earth or In the waters under the
•■arth Now there would In* a low mutter
in K as of distant thunder, reverberated
among mountain caverns-, anon a wild,
piercing bang that would thrill every breast
with momentary terror, and then a confu
don of sounds, iow and sharp, mingling to
gether as the smaller succumbed to the
force of the greater. The men listened to
the noise* as they rowed on and on, mile
after mile, in their small boats, toward Icy
(ape. their bodies kept warm by continual
Mereise, their minds kept calm by the
discipline of their calling, and their hearts
’ u yoed up by the hope which flickers in
(very bosom so long as one chance of life
rffiains. Some were four days in making
: he ships; others not so long by eighteen
" r twenty hours. Some were fortunate in
'Etching favorable winds, others met with
’ ontr.iry breezes, which delayed them very
much and increased their tolls. An occa
sional free wind would allow a setting of
sails and a cessation from rowing. At
‘ en gth the last boats reached the ships, and
were joyfully received by the hospitable
and crews. The condition of the
men wan pitiable in theextreme, from their
' tceasive labors, relieved only by an occa
sional rest by a fire on the beach. They
mi not suffered for food, bat every limb In
. r ixxlies was racked with torturing
A FORTUNATE CHANIJE OF BASE.
Desponding to the stern call of duty they
mimodiatfly prepared to return to the Inlet
v ieriCl they hail started, and with a cour-
Mp- and endurance worthy of emulation,
“'•’ commenced their journey. When
•' ’On* forty miles of the distance had been
ms-fte, the crews were met by the captains

The route to the Cape was re
_umci| by officers and men alike, and after
serin of adverse winds and dodging of ice
their point was gained, and they land
p B Af<‘ly on the decks which were to con
' V them to the Sandwich Islands. During
l s change ofbase, amid all the obstacles
countered, one thiDg was most fortunate.
The very wind which brought down the
ice floes upon the ships was tne salvation of
the crews. Had there been two or three
days of calm weather the Ice would have
!< -med so rapidly that they never would
have been able to make their way out, and
would have beeu compelled to leave their
boats and take to the land, aod in that case
starvation and death would have been in
evitable. As it was, the ice made so fast
that the boats could scarcely be saved
from being cut to pieces, and some of them
had to throw overboard a portion of their
provisions in order to make any headway.
The ships had laid in provisions for only
about three months, and had the men been
compelled to take the shore, what they
could have carried would have lasted only
a short time comparatively.
HIE ESQUIMAUX WARNING.
All agree in the accounts of the warning
given the ships of the Esquimaux by sigos
and what little English they could'speak.
They said it had been “no good time,’’ “ no
catch whales,” “ice come,” etc. While the
ships are around the natives neglect their
labors of lying in provision, and they have
a fair prospect oi starving themselves this
winter. No sooner had the ships been de
serted than they were boarded by the na- i
Fives, who began removlng everything eata- i
bie and whearable first, and then teariug >
off wbat planks they could. It is the Im-j
presslon of all the gentlemen who have ar- ;
rived that even if the ships should escape
being crashed in the ice, they will be so |
dismantled and torn to pieces by the na- j
tives that they wlil not be available fbr '
anything but kindling wood.
now THE WHALEMEN FEEL
“ How do the men feel about going back ?”
said vour correspondent to Mr. Luce.
“ Oh, they don’t feel any more reluctance
now than they did before,” was the quick,
jovial response. There isn’t any more dan
ger now than there has been ewery year we
nave been there. The ice has closed in
around the ships before this, but they have
always managed to get out. Because they
got caught this season is no sigu that it
will happen again in a century.”
“ The ouly wonder to me,” said I, “ is that
it hasn’t happened before.”
“ Yes, it is a great wonder,” he replied.
“ There are risks in every business, you
know, and in none are there greater one’s
than iu whaling; it is a hard life, taking it
all in all, but there is no more dauger one
year than another.”
“ Will you go again ?”
“Oh, yes; I’m in the business; have
got used to it; know more about it than
anything else, and 1 shall stick to it. That’s
about the way we all feel.”
Bo far as I can learn this is the sentiment
of all. Borne of the New Bedford men ship
ped again just as soon as they reached Hon
olulu, and those who havecome and are on
the way here are ready to start again as
soon an opportunity offers.
