Winter.
All n&tnre Icels the renovating lorce
Os winter, onlv to the thoughtless eye
In ruin seen. Tne froet-eoncocted globe
Draws in abundant vegetable soul,
And gathers vigor for the coming year.
A stringer glow sits on the lively cheek
Os ruddy fire, and luculent along
The purer rivers flow ; then sulleu deeps,
Transparent, open to the shepherd’s gaze,
And murmur hoarser at the fixing frost.
What art thou, Frost? and whence thy keen
stores
Derived thou secret all-invading power,
Whom even the illusive fluid cannot fly ?
Is . ot thy potent energy unseen ?
Myriads of little salts, or hocked, or shaped
Like double wedges, and dlffnsed immense
Through water, earth and ether ? Hence ul
eve,
Steamed eager from the red horizon round,
With the fierce rage of whiter deep snffused,
An icy gale, oft shifting, o’er the pool,
Breathes a blue film, and in its mad career
Arrests the bickering stream. The loosened
ice,
Let down the flood, and half dissolved by day,
Hustles uo more ; but to the sedgy bank
Fast grows, or gathers round the pointed
stone,
A crystal pavement, by the breath of heaveu
Cemented firm ; till seized from shore to shore,
The whole imprisoned river growls below.
[From the New Vmk Bulletin.
Cotton Culture In California.
Whatever results may attend the experi
ment of cotton growing on the Pacific
slope, preparations are now making for its
trial on a scale so extended as to show that
the enterprising capitalists interested mean
business. We learn from the San Francisco
Bulletin, that the Cotton Growers and
Manufacturers’ Association, composed of
Californians and Englishmen, have decided
upon the Kern River Valley as the seat of
their operations, and have purchased 10,000
acres of land upon which to test the experi
ment ol cotton growing. One thousand
acres are to be ptauted in the spring, ami
the rest brought under cultivation from
time to time, in such tracts and in such
manner as experience shall show to be
most economical and effective. But cot
ton growing is not the sole object of the
association. 1 n addition to the 10,000 acre,-
of land above mentioned, the company
get the town of Bakersfield and some
sixteen dwellings and a substantial ware
house, the power and privileges
of the Kern Island Irrigating Canal Com
pany, a flouring mill and an extensive lo
cal transportation business ; the whole
costing the company about $200,000. The
association will divide its lands up and
sell them at low rates to actual settlers, <>u
five years’ credit. It receives an irrigating
canal, of which four and a half miles are
now completed, and nine more yet remain
to be built. The canal is of 720 horse pow
er, and has the necessary capacity to water
80,000 acres of lands. This water will be
supplied to settlers who wish to use It, for
.he production of two crops yearly—-wheat
first, and corn next—while at the same
time its power for driving machinery will
be utilized by the erection of mills—woolen
and cotton. In short, the association
seems to have added to its purpose of en
couraging cotton culture the development
of useful industries in general, aud should
ihe enterprise prove a success it will add
much to the prosperity of that portion of
the State In which its operations are con
ducted.
The encouragement offered in the matter
of cotton growing Is said to be very great .
Four years ago a plantation of 120 acres In
Kern Valley was cultivated In cotton under
circumstances which, though unfavorable
to full success of the experiment, showed
that the industry could at once be estab
lished on a profitable basis. Both the Ten
nessee and the Mexican varieties are-plant
ed. The planting should have been done
about the Ist of April, but the Mexican
seeds were delayed In transit, alutjjtln
planting was not doue until May. The
Mexican seeds, requiring a long seaso,.,
did not fully mature, but the Tennessee
seed yielded a bale to the acre, and tin
profits ofjthejforopjpaid!
covered all expenses. The results of the
experiment of cultivatingjcotton on a large
scale will be watched with interest, and
should they fulfill the expectations of those
interested, it is probable that thejindustry
will be extended until all the available
lands in California have been brought un
der cultivation iijtlie.’staple.
George ill once desired to give a peerage
to his family physician, and went so far as
to consult Lord North about the style to
be given him. That witty minister re
minded the King of the proposed peer’s
principal occupation In the Royal family,
and suggested the title of Lord Deliverus,
aud the King dropped the subject. It was
at one time said that Queen Victoria de
sired to confer the same distinction on her
accoucher, Sir James Clarke, but no min
ister could ever be Induced to listen to
the proposal.
