The Turn of the Year.
BT GEORGE M’DOMALD.
A gentle wind oi western birtb.
From some far summer sea,
Walt est daisies in tbe wintry earth,
Wat;* a thoughts of hope in me.
The sun is low, the paths are wet,
A r .1 dance with frolic hail ;
The treee, whose spring time is not yet,
Bwee t singing in the gale.
Vonng gleams o( sunshine peep and play ;
Thick vapor crowds between ;
I'ift strange tha* on a coming day
The earth will ail be green.
The north wind blows, and blasts and raves,
And flips bis snowy wing;
Back 1 toss thy bergs on arctic waves !
Thou canst not stay our spring.
I’p comes the primrose, wondering ;
The snow-drop droopeth by ;
The holy spirit of tbe spring
is working silently.
Sweet breathing odors gently wile
Earth’s other children out;
On nature’s face a hopeful smile
Is flickering about.
When earth lay hard, unlovely, dull,
And life within her slept,
Above her heaven grew beautiful,
And forth her beauty crept.
i And though tpars fall, as fall they will,
Smiles wander Into sighs,
Yet if the sun keep shining still,
Her perfect day will rise.
t he sky is smiling over me,
Hath smiled away the frost;
( iothed with young gnen the patient lea
With buds the woods embossed.
The trees yet shut not out the sky,
It sees down to the flowers ;
They lilt iheir beauty tearlessly,
They hide in leafy bowers.
t his day iH yours, sweet birds, sing on ;
The cold Is all forgot;
Ye had a dream, but it is gone,
Pain that is past is not.
,)oy that was past is come again ;
And if the summer brings
Vo care, It lea lovely pain,
That broods Instead of sings.
Blow on uie, wind, from west and south ,
Sweet summer spirit blow '
Come like a kiss from dear child’s mouth,
Who knows not what I know.
11,« earth’s perfection oometh soon ;
Our* lingereth alway;
We have a spring time—have a noon,
No sunny summer day.
Bose sprinkled e,e, gold-branded morn,
May still poor nature’s sighs ;
To ns a higher hope Is born—
We rest in that we rise.
But at the last a sapphire day
Alt oyer us will bow ;
And man’s heart, full of sunlight, say,
“ Lord, ’tls thy summer now.”

The Burglary at Tlfftany A- Co’*.
One of the boldest attempts at burglary
which has recently come before the public
,vas made yesterday morning on the well
Miown iewelry store of Messrs. Tiffany &
Cos., Union tiquare. In this case the cul
prit, a Frenchman named Francis Brodle,
< xhiblted a boldness almost incredible when
he entered an Iron building in which twenty
men are supposed to be keeping watch, and
it was only by an accident that he failed to
escape with his booty. Little beyond the
mere arrest in the act has yet transpired,
friit Captain Henry Burden, Detective
Charles Hagan and Officer Meade, of the
I’weutv-ninth Precinct, are quiety but as
siduously working up the case, and It is
thought that by this evening some impor
tant developments will have transpired.—
the particulars of the bold attempt and Its
unsuccessful Issue are as follows:
Brodle put up at the Springier House,
adjoining Tiffany’s, as a guest, and was
assigned a room on the fourth floor adjoin
ing the Tltt'any building. Yesterday morn
ing he quietly cllmed from the window of
his room to the coping of the fourth story
of Tiffany's, and effected au entrance
Through the window at that dizzy height
from the pavement, where a mis-step would
have precipitated him to the pavement
below and insured his Instant death. As
soon as he was Inside he slipped off his
shoes and descended to the lower floor,
where some t wenty “ watchmen ” were
quietly sleeping His first movement was
to strip the cover from a case of watches
and arrange them for removal. Being a
man of exquisite taste he then selected
from one of the pedestals a bronze Hebe,
which he carried to a front window on the
second story, and also a chronometer move
ment clock.
He then descended to the first floor iu
order to renew his labors, when he stum
bled over some object, which, having dis
turbed the slumbers of one of the watch
mm, caused him to beat a hasty retreat to
ihe second floo*-. He was in the act of low
ering a ladder from the window by which
to effect his entrance when he was Inter
rupted by the appearance of Officer Meade.
He drew back inside tbe building while
Meade disturbed the slumbers of those on
watch and told them of the thief beneath
the roof. The door was opened and Meade
and the watchman rushed up stairs and
succeeded in arresting Brodie before he
could get back to his room. He was taken
to the station house and kept there until
after the superintendent had gone to his
office, when he was taken over by Captain
Burden, Detective Hagan and Officer
Meade. A consultation ended In his being
sent to Jefferson Market, from whence he
was removed to the station house to await
further developments.

Heroism or a Hallroad Conductor.
A conductor on a freight and passenger
train on the Syracuse and Binghampton
Railroad performed a daring feat a few
days since, by which a fearful catastrophe
was averted A correspondent at Chenan
go Forks, New York, furnishes the follow
ing particulars: The train, consisting of
twenty-four stock cars and one passenger
< ar, which was tilled with passengers, was
f.«twoen this station and Whitney’s Point,
going at a tolerably high rate of speed,
when the engineer, William Hardy, dis
covered a rail entirely out of the track
some distance ahead. He immediately re
versed his locomotive, but, on the second
thought, determined to attempt running the
train over the place where the rail was
missing, and at once turned on a full head of
“team. Theengiueer and fireman, however,
did not remain to see what success the ex
periment would meet with, but jumped off
the engine, leaving It without any one to
control it. The train bounded over the dis
connected track at a tearful rate of speed,
every car retaining Its position on the track.
Tbe dangerous spot was passed, but, with
no one upon the locomotive to control its
•»peed. a most terrible fate awaited the train
somewhere. The state of affairs became
known to the passengers, and a panic was
at onoe raised. At Whitney’s Point there
was every probability that the track would
not be In readiness for the train, as the rate
it was going it would reach there some
minutes before its time. In this extremity
Conductor John Vrooman proved himself
to tie a hero. He was in the passenger car
at the rear of the train, but clambering up
the ladder of the freight car next in ad
vance, bo ran the whole length of the runa
way train ou the top of the cars, and was
•soon in the locomotive cab, seized the
throttle, and In the next moment had the
train under control. A less heroic man in
charge of the train, ami It is impossible to
tell what the result of the extraordinary
i unawav might have been."
The Chicago papers warn the country
against “ burnt out dead beats, who are
trying to make money by exaggerating
tlislr losses by Are. It is hard to distln
uulsh thorn from the honest supplicants for
help.” One exaggerated case In particular
is mentioned. ]? Is that of a religions
newspaper run by several private Individu
als. which before the fire did not own a
press or any printing material whatever
but had its printing and publication done
by a separate concern, as any business man
would procure hla hand bills and circulars
Hu» when the Are swept by, leaving them
poor as It found them, but none the poorer,
~rie of the proprietors started for the East’
and, by dint of persistent misrepresenta
tions. has raised money enongh to buy a
new Hoe press and type for his paper. The
