Wandering on the beach.

Out on the waste of waters,
Watching some distant tail
With an eye so sad and dreamy,
A cheek so wan and paie.
Ever the same old story,
“ Where is mv lover brave?
They say—’tis a cruel fable—
H j sleeps in an ocean yrave ;
fell me, oh, kindly saiior.
Did you meet with a bonny ship,
And a handsome boyish captain,
With a fair unbearded lip*’’
Kvt-r the same sad answer,
For they know her, one and all;
And thev whisper among each other,
With aiglis of her reason’s all ;
For thos'- jolly tars remember
The late of that vessel brave,

With her slowiv breaking heart,
Lo> g, long years have vanished

Yet life has for her no duty

(From the Philadelphia Led*,«

The present year has shown a greatly In
»r<-a**ed bus’ntejs on canals generally. The
Schnylkill Canal, which Is now in the con
trol and virtual ownership of the Reading
Railroad Company, has nearly doubled its
coal tonnage of last, year to the same date,
being to the 18th instant 963,903 tons!
against 519.460 tons to corresponding date
•ast vear. The business of the Delaware
onJ Rar tan Canal has increased in similar
; roportion, while that of the Morris Canal,
i.ow in the control and virtual ownership
u ».h. Lehigh Valley Railroad Company,
nas been of greater magnitude than any
vear since 1364, although thirteen working
weeks were lost at the commencement!
vieg to the great Pennsylvania coal strike, j
lUe company now employs three hundred
and twenty-five boats, one hundred men,
and three hundred mules. This favorable
report is made in despite of the fact that the
boating season opened in the midst of the
■♦tore mentioned coal strike, which con
tinued for -everal months. The trade of
the Lehigh Navigation and Delaware Dlvi
•don Cant! Is about up to last year’s ton
nage. not withstanding its business too was
Interrupted by the same coal strike that
mtervreJ with the trade of the Morris and

■ auals also show a most satisfactory In
• reuse of business The single Item of corn
• arrled is tonr times that of last year,
against 4.633,700 bushels in same time last
an Increase of 13,80&,500 bushels, and
by reducing the wheat to floor, the quantity
of the latter left at itdewater this year,
• ompared with the corresponding period
.ast year, shows an excess equal to 636,500
barrels. The receipts for tolls for the cur- i
rent year to the 15th Inst were 12,927,424.
•».ga!u*t $2.463.1W* n same time last year *
am increase of $464 255. The coal tonnage '
alone nu the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal
thus rar this season has increased 30 per !
<ent., and the business of the Chesapeake I
and Delaware Canal Is steadily improving, j
dome of the, n't ror canals of onr own Com- i
toobwealth, from local and temporary
causes, bav not shown the Increase in busi
ness elsewhere generally noted, but 1m- I
proyements are In progress ami in contem
plation which it is believed will surely
bring them up next year. Mach of this
favorable change is due to Increased
economy in more perfect working, and to
raiiwav connections with canals, which has
lone away with railway rivalry fbr the
same trade. With success In the effort
making to achieve accelerated speed In
'■anal transportation inland, there is
promise of greatly increased usefulness to
