There I* no Death.
BY SIK E. BUI.WEE LYTTON.
There is no death ! The stars go down
To rise upon some tairer shore ;
Aud bright in Heaven’s jeweled crown.
The shine forevermore.
There is no death ! The dust we t ead
Shall change beneath the summer showers
To golden grain or mellowed fruit,
Or rainbow-tinted flowers.
The granite rooks disorganize,
And b ed the hungry moss they bear ;
The forest leaves drink daily life,
From out the viewless air.
There is no death 1 The leaves may fall,
And flowers may fade and pass away ;
They only wait through wintry hours,
The eomiog of May day.
There is no death ! An angel form
Walks o’er the earth with silent tread ;
And bears our l>est loved things away,
And then wo call them “ dead.”
He leaves our hearts all desolate.
He plucks our fairest, sweetest flowers ;
Transplanted into bliss, they now
Adorn immortal bowers.
The bird-likc voice, whose joyous tones
Made glad these scenes o( sin and strife,
Sings now an everlasting song,
Around the tree of life.
Where’er he sees a smile too bright.
Or heart too pure for taint and vice.
He bears it to that world of light,
To dwell in paradise.
Horn unto that undying life.
They leave us but to come again ;
With joy we wefeorne (hem the same,
Except their sin and pain.
And ever near us, though unseen.
The dear ini mortal spirits tread ;
For all the boundless universe
is life t/ure is no dead.
( From the New York Herald, Nov. 27
Sketches of the Dead Communists.
Loul* Nathaniel Kernel.
Louis Nathaniel liossel, who was shot
to death by French soldiers yesterday, as
reported to us by cable telegram, was born
on the 9th of September, in the year 1844,
at St. Brieuc (Nord). He studied at the
Eeole Polytechnique, where he attained the
grade of sous lieutenant in the mouth of
October, 1864 He was appointed First
Lieutenant in the Second Regiment of En
gineers on Ist of February, 1867. He was
attached to the company of miners. He
was commissioned Lieutenant on the .‘tOtl»
of December, 1867, and stationed subse
queutly in Metz and Montpelier. Promot
ed to rank of captain, he served at Bonrges
and again in Metz. Rossel escaped from
the celebrated fortress. On the 14th of
December, same year, he became command
er of the engineering staff' in the camp at
Nevers. He made his escape from Metz the
very day the Prussian troops entered it
From France Rossel passed to Belgium and
England. He returned to Tours, where he
made the acquaintance of M. Gambetta.
Gamlretta entrusted him with a misslou 1o
the north of France which directed him to
ascertain and report on the amountof mili
tary force and means of defense to be found
there On ills return he was appointed an
auxiliary colonel of engineers on extra
duty. He assumed this position at the mo
ment when the Paris insurrection broke
out. A dispatch which he read in a news
paper informed him that the Bonaparte
Government had vacated the capital, and
that the city was “ in the power of the in
surrection.” Rossel did not hesitate. He
wrote to the French Minister of War In
Versailles to inform him that he had resolv
ed to abandon his post of command, and to
proceed to Paris to offer his aid to the revo
lution. Rossel admitted the genuineness
of the latter ever afterwards, stating that
he had coolly calculated the consequences.
Arriving in Paris he placed himself in com
munication with members of the Commit
tee of the Seventeenth Arrondissemeut. He
disciplined the legion by his zeal and ac
tivity. Some of the officers and men became
dissatisfied with his system and drill. They
complained and Rossel was arrested. He
was released through efforts of a friendly
officer, and took service under General Clti
seret. By him he was appointed Delegate
for War and All the post of Chief of the
start 1 . He held the positihn to the 20th of
April, 1871, under the then existing govern
ment. Then he resigned. He had already
been charged with the Presidency of the
courts-martial. In this capacity he tried
many French citizens on a charge of “hav
ing refused to march against the army of
Bonaparte,” sentenced them to death, and
was inexorably severe in the infliction of the
dread penalty. He attended dally in the
Court until the 10th of May. On that day
the Commune declared his "deposition from
power and ordered his arrest. In com
pany with M. Gerard in he made his escape
and secreted himself in another quarter of
Paris. Ho was arrested by a member of
the legal police of the city on the 7th of
June, 1871. Rossel had disguised himself
as a servant of the Eastern Railway Com
pany, and carried with him a letter address
ed to one Tirebois, a foreman in the service
of tiiat corporation. With this he appeared
at the Vilette station. In all this he sought
to establish a false identity. He was recog
nized, notwithstanding, and owned his
name and rank. After his arrest it was or
dered that he should be tried tty court-mar
tial on the following
CHARGES.
First —Desertion at home.
Second —Taking part in an attempt to ex
cite insurrection, change the from of govern
ment and produce civil war by arming
citizens against each other.
Third—Of having engaged and enrolled,
caused to be engaged and enrolled, soldiers ;
having provided and procured arms and
ammunition without the orders of the legi
timate authorities.
Fourth —Of having taken command ot
armed bands, directed them in their attack
upon and resistance to the public force act
ing against those bands, which invaded
for purposes of pillage and devastation
lands, fortresses, magazines, post offices, ar
senals and public buildings.
Fifth— Of having thus as a soldier borne
arms against Prance.
Crimes set forth and punishable under
articles 231, 233, 204 and 208 of the Military
Code of Justice, and articles 91, 92, 96 and
97 of the ordinary penal code.
I'lie editor of the Springfield Republican
(who is a farmer as well as an editor) is
troubled with hens which unnaturally re
fuse to awake at “cockcrow,” or at the
proper time for all well regulated chickens
to arouse from their slumbers. The reason
given for this phenomenon is, that “In
countries as cold as in New England the
hens are apt to roost an hour ar two after
the sun rises a result which affects the
character of the eggs and the quality of
the chickens, in order to remedy this
curious condition of affairs, the editor of
the Republican, after many years’ investiga
tion of the matter, has hit upon an ingenl
ous “ invention, which will add largely to
the value of poultry throughout the coun
try.” This Invention consists of a patent
b. u roost, the peculiarity of which is that
of an astronomical contrivance attached to
the roost which compels the hens to awaken
exactly at daybreak. Unfortunately, it is
not stated whether or not this invention
prevents them from again resuming their
slumtiers—a most important consideration
by the way.
The family name of the Earl of Chester
field, who has just earned the Immortality
of a cable notice of his death for having
died of the same disease from which the
l’rince of Wales seems likely to recover,
was Stanhope. He was the seventh earl of
the same title, and was born in 1831, mak
ing him at the time of his death 40 years of
age. He succeeded his father to the title in
the year 1866, and never having married,
leaves no sou to enjoy the title which will’
in consequence, descend to his cousin, a
Mr. George Philip Stauhope. The most in
teresting feature connected with the de
ceased and his relatives of the Stanhope
blood is that the dandyish Philip Downes
Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield, who wrote
the famous cynical and heartless letters to
his son upon the rules of deportment, was
a member of the same family. Apart from
this, the Stanhopes are sufficiently respect
able, as the family was of some importance
as far back as the reigns of Henry 111 anc i
Edward I.
