BY PHO IB CARY.
I s.iid it t might go back again
l'<. the very liour and place of my birth ,
M ght have tny life whatever I chose,
Aud live it in any part of the earth :
Hut perfect sunshine into my sky,
Baui-h the shadow of sorrow and doubt;
Have all my hupi>iue*s multiplied,
And all my Buttering stricken oat;
If I could have known, in the years now gone,
t he best, that a woman cornea to know :
« ouhl hive had whate’er will make her blest,
i >r whatever she thinks will make her so ;
Have found the highest and purest bliss
That the bridal wreath and ring enclose ;
And gained the one out of all the world
That my heart as well as my reason chose ;
And if this had been, and 1 stood to-night
By my children, lying asleep in their beds,
And could count in my prayers, for a rosary,
The shining row of their golden heads;
Yes, I said, if a miracle such as this
Could be wrought for me, at tny bidding,
still
1 would choose to have ray past as It is,
And to let ray future come as it will;
1 would not make the path I have trod
More pleasant or even, more straight or
wide;
Nor change my course the breadth of a hair
This way or that way, to either side.
My past is mine, and 1 take it all ;
Its weakness—its folly, if you please ;
Nay, even ray sins, if you come to that,
May have been ray helps-not hiudranees 1
It 1 saved my body from the flames
Because that once I had burned my hand ;
Or kept myself from a greater sin
By doing a lees —you will understand ;
li was better I Buttered a little pain
Better I sinned for a little time—
If the smarting warned me back from death,
Ami tin- sting of sin withheld from crime.
Who knows its strength by trial will know
What strength must he set against a sin ;
And how temptation is overcome
He has learned who has felt its power
within !
And who knows how a life at the last may
show ?
Why, look at ‘be moon '-om where we
stand!
Opaque, uneven, you say ; yet It shiues,
A luminous sphere, complete and grand.
So let my past stand just as it stands,
Aud let me now, as I may, grow old ;
I am what I am, and my life for me
U the best—or It had not been, I hold.
I From the Missouri Republican.
For Dear Life.
Tiro llui" Ia i* Make a Desperate Leap
for Liberty,
Ah a police officer was strolling near
West, amt Albany streets, New York, at
about 230 o’clock on Sunday morning, he
heard a singular noise, somewhat like the
licking of a large clock. The officer listened
for a short time, and found that the sound
came from the second floor of a building
where 11. B. Cromwell, owner of the Savan
nah steamship line, had his office. The
officer, suspecting that burglars were op
erating on a safe, summoned assistance, and
having with his companions broken open a
window, the house was noiselessly entered.
liishte it was pitch dark, but they heard
whispers inside of Mr. Cromwell’s office.
One bnrglar was telling another, who was
drilling >t safe, to hurry up, as daylight
would soon be upon them. The burglars
had left the door unlocked. When the offi
cers rushed in they found three villainous
looking men hard at work drilling the safe.
The burglars were taken completely by sur
prise. The only light in the room was
irotn a dark lantern, which one of the thieves
Held in his hand, the rays striking the spot
where the drill was at work. As soon as
the officers entered everything was dark.
A short struggle ensued, and James West
was captured. In the darkness the other
i wo burglars slipped out through the door
and ran upstairs.
They were closely pursued by the officers
until they reached the fifth story and passed
through the scuttle to the roof when they
heard an officer close upon their heels
cocking his revolver. The nearest structure
is a three story tenement house, about
flffeeu fee* away, with a sharp slanting
slate roof. When the officer reached the
roof the burglars leaped upon the tenement
house. It was a desperate chance, and
seemed almost certain death. The burglars
"truck near the angle of the roof with
great force and caught hold with their
hands. There they hung with a desperate
grip. The officer saw it would be suicide
to follow them, and hurriedly retracing his
steps got, Into the tenement house and
stealthily crept up to thereof. The burg
lars heard the approach and shifted their
positions. Looking around the burglars
saw the aperture of the ventilator some
feet away. It was a desperate move for
them to reach it, as the slate roof was
slanting, and if they lost their balance
t hev were sure to fall to the sidewalk and
tie dashed to pieces. They, however, suc
ceeded in finally reaching the ventilator,
from which one of them was afterwards
dragged. The other escaped, but was
caught in coming down stairs. The burg
lars had a complete set of apparatus, worth
$350. In the safe there were about SI,OOO
cash and from $50,000 to SIOO,OOO in bonds,
notes and other valuables—a great haul. If
they could have secured It.
A Fish Story.
The last flsh story comes from New Jer
sey. Lately, in the interior of that State, a
mild looking conntryman entered a railway
ear, bearing a bundle tied up in a handker
chief, which he placed under the seat at the
end of the ear. After traveling along for
about half an hour, a lady sitting in front
of the countryman was observed to move
uneasily on her seat, and to cast savage
glances at a seemingly respectable man sit
ting by her side. In a few minutes an
other lady, still further to the front, “be
came uneasy.’ and at last, rising in her
seat, requested some gentleman would pro
tect her from an elderly looking gentleman
by her side, and whom, she stated, had
insulted her. A dozen persons offered
their assistance, and before the accused
could speak in his own defense, his
hat was jammed over his eyes, and he
was dragged to the rear of the car.—
While there, and carrying on with the
avengers a war of words as to what the in
dignity meant, still another lady rose also
• oated further up the car, and accused a
gentleman sitting behind her with improp
er conduct. A rush was made for her in
citer number two, but that gentleman
vigorously defended himself with a large
walking stick he happened to have (and
which, by the way, was one cause of the
last troubles, his accuser stating that he
bad ludecoronsly i>een rapping her ankles
under the seat with the same), and while
l, "‘ struggle to get at him was still In pro
ress, somebody iu the front of the car
shouted, “There’s a snake on the floor!’’
A scene then ensued. The ladies in the
ear clambered up on the seats, and many
got on the arms and backs of the same.
One elderly maiden managed to stand on
the barks of two seats in the best circus
manner possible under the circumstances
while a young mot her threw her baby into
a parcel rack, and then hung convulsively
to a ventilator. The confusion awoke the
countryman, who, on being told of the
snake, first felt in his bundle, and then ex
claimed, “ I'm blamed if that old eel halnt
got loosestarted for the front, and soon
returned, grasping firmly an immense eel
which he had caught while out fishing, but
which, when brought into the car,’had
managed to get out of the bundle, and had
wended its way to the frout, lovingly
i.aressing the different varieties of ladles’
garters which he encountered on the way
Apologies given and received, straightened
- verytbing iu that car but the hat that was
jammed down, and the countryman leaving
at the next station, no blood was drawn.
A sadly-deceived man has posted the fol
lowing notice in the post office at Berlin,
“ My wife, Mary Miller, having deceived
me in regard to her age before marriage.
<i aiming to lie twenty-six only when she
was thirty-two, with teeth badly decayed,
while I am not twenty-two, with perfectly
vmnd teeth, therefore l will pay no debts
<»f her contracting.
