George Francis Train.—A considera*
ble audience, moved by curiosity to see and
hear the Irrepressible George Francis
Train, assembled at Girardey's Opera
House last evening. It was the lecturer’s
first visit to Augusta, aud as so much had
been salt anil written about him it is not
surprising that public expectation was on
the tiptoe. After a short time past the ap
pointed hour had elapsed Train emerged
with a sort of sidelong waltzing motion
from one of the side doors and made his ap
! Mia ranee upon the stage. He was intro
duced to the audience by MaJ. Girardey. The
lecturer then, after requesting the audience
to take the front seats, began a rambling
sort of discourse, of which, we must con
fess, it is almost beyond our power to give
any adequate description.
From the Cincinnati Convention to
woman’s rights, from Ihe French Republic
to Grant’s nepotism, lie jumped with light
nlng celerity, the whole making such a
confused jumble of words and sentences
that it. was only with difficulty that any
thing Intelligible could be extorted out, of
the mas The oddity of the whole
thing was so great, that the audience
was almost constantly convulsed with
laughter, and the louder the laugh the
more ludicrous became the antics arid
the eccentric speech ol the lecturer, so
called. It is said that someone once asked
Ralph Waldo Emerson what was the mean
ing of a certain passage in one of his works.
Emerson, after .scrutinizing the passage for
a few moments, answered : “My friend,
when I wrote that sentence only God and
1 understood it; now only God understands
it,.” George Francis is somewhat in tlie
same predicament. We do not think that
even he understands what he is talking
about. It. is only the extreme tudicrons
ness of his lectures that make them worth
listening to at all.

Handsome Sign. —The attention of many
of our readers was doubtless attracted yes
terday to the handsome sign of the Globe
Hotel which was placed in position during
t he morning on the lamp post at the corner
of Broad and MeTut.osh streets. It is with
out doubt one of the handsomest, works ot
the kind in the city and reflects much
credit upon the artist—Mr. E M. M.iller —
by whom it was designed and painted.
The sign is made of glass, is In the shape of
a lantern, and is placed over the gas jet on
the lamp post. On each of the four sides ol
the lantern is the representation of a globe
and the words, “ Jackson’s Globe Hotel ’
The globe is painted in beantifnl style, as
well ns the letters of the words, the whole
forming an harmonious blending of colors.
We feel assured that it is as fine a work of
the kind as can be produced anywhere.

Editors Constitutionalist Will you.
In the kindness of vmic heart, allow the
voices of two persecuted classes of your
fellow-citizens to be heard. We allude to
th>* following ordinance offered bv Aider
man Philip at Monday’s meeting of Council
“An ordinance to prevent goats and
cows from running at large in the streets,
and requiring snch animals to be im
pounded and advertised, aud. If not re
deemed, sold.”
To the credit of the City Fathers, tills
anti-cow and goat ordinance received only
the vote of its originator. Broad street,
above the Upper Market., and in fact all
over, has been, from time immemorial, the
undisputed home of cows and goats, espe
cially after dark. No one should lie dis
posed, In this age of progress, to legislate
eows and goats out of their time honored
privileges. People that, are opposed to our
sole.occupancy (after dark) of the streets of
Augusta know nothing of our habits. A
cow that, will move one inch oul of the
way of a pedestrian, a horse, or a buggy,
is promptly expelled and deprived of the
privileges of the streets. A goat that, will
allow any person to pess unmolested is
treated’ln like summary manner
Mr. Editor, cows and goals have rights
which must lx? respected. If your tax
liayiug citizens object to our occupancy of
the streets, let them stay at. home. Alt we
ask Is to be let alone. If we are not let
alone we shall make our voices heard when
the proper time comes. •
Yours, iff behalf of self and others,
William Goat.

use is laid upon the shoulders of England.

The barometer will probably continue to
fall very generally on Wednesday, without
important general change in the weather
further than increasing cloudiness and
more numerous lightlocai storms through
out the region east of the Mississippi.—
Threatening weather, possibly with rain,
will prevail in Northern New England.
