“TINY TIM."
Toole was acting in London in The Christmas
Carol, playing Lob Crutehitt. A little delicate
girl, one of the children of the dresser at the
theater, whose pale lace and interesting man
ner fitted her well for the part, played Tiny
Tim. The sickly little child w .s a favorite in
the theater, and especially so with Mr. Toole.
During the performance of the piece, as the
reader may remember, the artistes sat down reg
ularly to a supper of roasted goose and plum
j pudding, which was. in the present instance,
| genuine material. Toole was in the habit of
I chopping the viands up and giving them to the
j children performing, and they, when they had
1 eaten the first helping, returned, like Oliver, for
j more.
Tiny Tim, however, like Benjamin, appeared
| to eat seven times as much as her brethren. She

PROBLEM NO. 51.

growing in liim for tho child. Her pallor and
Bickness seemed to him suspiciously allied with
indigestion, the first fruits of gluttony. He
struggled against this feeling for a time, but it
mastered him, and he could not think kindly ot
the little one. One day, in a fit of disgust, he
sawed off a piece of meat and bones from the
savory bird and flung it into her plate with a
piece of plum-pudding, which left little for the
others, hoping that for once the child would be
satisfied. But she wasn’t. With a punctuality
worthy of a landlord, she returned for more.
Toole was shocked.
“My dear,” said he, “you will make yourself
sick if you eat so much. I gave you enough
for three or four big boys. You could not have
eaten it in this time. Where are the bones?”
he added, looking at the empty plate.
The poor child hung her head. Toole spoke
again rather sharply.
“Please sir,” sobbtd Tiny (Tim, “my little
sister ate it.”
And, following the direction of her eyes to
wards the wings, there he saw a hungry little
horde of ragamuffins pitching into the Christ-
mas cheer with an energy that showed how
much they needed it. A light was let in upon I
him. Little Tiny had been filling the stomachs j
of her hungry little brothers and sisters, and ,
not her own. She never took another grudged j
morsel from the table. Toole told the story to i
Dickens, who listened attentively, and, at its
conclusion, with a burst o’ warm enthusiasm, '
cried, “Give her the whole goose and half the !
plum pudding next time;” and if the actor oid !
not follow the warm-hearted novelist’s instruc- j
tions to the letter he acted up to the spirit of I
them, and Tiny’s family never lacked a square j
meal during the run of the piece.
Consoling.—Some one has discovered that
short young ladies generally get married quick
er than tall ones, and that the former make the
best wives. This will be a source of great con
solation to the four-feet-five young ladies, who
have been looking gloomy aud sad because their
new bonnets don’t show above the pew hacks
at church.
