HINTS TO MOTHERS.
THE CARE OF CHILDREN.

aa gr. 20.
Country people can almost always obtain good
milk, but in citys there will be more or less
trouble. I will give here some of the signs by
which you can determine the quality of milk.
As specific gravity of good milk is heavier than
water, therefore a drop of it will sink in it. A
In addition to the many valuable suggestions r __ „ _
which our able health editor, Dr. Wilson, has I ?, ro P ° f 8°°d milk on your finger-nail will retain
its globular form. Good milk is thick and white,
given upon the subject of hygiene and the care
of children we give below an able article from
Dr. Salm's on infant diet.
Diet lor Infants.— The mortality of in
fants in the first year of birth is in many dis
tricts, especially in the country astonishingly
great, and by thorough investigation, I have
come to the conclusion, that mortality among
them could be considerably diminished at least
not bluish, yellowish or transparent. Good
milk most be sweet, it indicates the presence of
sugar of milk. Milk which does not smell wall
must be discarded.
1 on should, if possible, try to obtain morn
ing milk, it is fatter than milk taken during the
day. Lithmus paper will turn red in morning
milk but not in that taken during the day.

by twenty per cent, were it not for the ignorance ' i t0 ?* ot “ er8 > nurses, and the community at
of mothers and nurses in regard to feeding or I lar 8 e ’ A am ’
nursing them. ,
I will take now the libertyjof dropping several
hints in regird to this subject, and begin with
out any further preliminaries.
The best nourishment is as we all know,

mothers milk. The mother also derives her special 1 de Paix, when a French dan Jy greatly annoy
benefit from nursing, every nur3e advocating i od h® r by pertinaciously dogging her and glar-
the contrary except under certain circumstan
ces hereafter mentioned should be discarded.
Staiibtics have shown that of infants nourishe 1
by thsir own mother only eight percent died in
their first year, and of those by nuises thirty
percent. Mothers who love their offspring should
take paiticular notice of this.
Rules for nourishing an infant ought to be ob
served as given below.
In the first two months nurse as often and as
long as the child wishes to take food; a perfectly
healthy infant within the first two months, who
is suckled at an abundant and wholesome breast,
will usually sleep twenty out of twenty-four
hours, waking to nurse every two hours during
the day, and twioe or three times during the
night. After the age of two or three menths the
child is much more wakeful during the day,
though it will take a nap of two or three hours in
the morning, and a shorter one in the afternoon,
while it will sleep from early evening until the
following morning, waking but once cr twice to
nurse and you may feed every time as much as it
pleases. Tne mother mutt never nurse the child
immediately after excitement or immediately
after a lull meal. If one breast is not sufficient
give the othir and divide as much as possible
equally betwean both.
Be careful cf injury to the breast, of blows
and accidents, guard especially against cold,
and do never by the very best of health after the
tenth month of it’s birth nourish your infant, it
will become detrimental to you and your off
spring.
If the milk contains more than the usual quan
tity of fat or colastrum carpusles, which you
may determine by change of its color,or its feel-
iag, by taking the milk and rubbing between
your fingers you will find it unusually thick, but
the first sign that makes it’s appearance is diar-
reahoea ot the child. Mothers with impaired
health should under no circumstances nurse
their own offspring, still less those who are suf
fering from consumption, scrofula, etc.
In time the mother’s milk will become richer
of ohe6se and diminished of the quantity of su
gar, to such a degree that the child will not be
able to retain the milk it drinks, and it is thrown j
np in the form of curdled cheese, and in con
nection with this the child is generally taken
with diarrhoea. Very often mothers and some
Drs. can not explain the cause of such persist
ent ciarrhoeas, and if their examination would
extend to the mother’s milk the cause would be
plain.
The milk of mothers can undergo astonish
ingly sudden changes to such a degre on ac-
ooant of ill treatment to her, exoitement, anger,
etc., that the child after taking nourishment at
such times, becomes often alarmingly ill from
its effects. The opportunity to experience this
is not seldom at all, I have met several such
cases in my practice, and the only remedy is en
tire abstinence from the mother’s breast for sev
eral days.
Mothers and arses should under all ciroum-.
stances remember that some medicines taken
by them, go partly over in the milk, and show
their effects on the child in a very marked way
Particularly narcotics, such as Opium, a ohild
will sleep so soundly and be so hard to arouse
as to alarm the parents.
Should the nurse partake of too much intoxi
cating liquor, you will see intoxication to some
degree manifested in the ohild mostly by stu-

The Paris child born, in a balloon, developed
extraordinary capacity for slang before it was
two months old. *How,’ it said, looking sweetly
up at a physician who happened to be in at
tendance,’ ‘how is that for high ? ’
Madame V—has a passion for always dressing
her daughter in clothes that are a great deal too
large for her, on the ground that she is still
growing. ‘My dear,’ said she, ‘you can't put on
that dress. It is worn out.’ What a pity ! It
was just beginning to fit me.’ answered the
daugLter.
It is told of a certain Glasgow bailie that,
when visiting Paris as one of a deputation from
Glasgaw to Louis Philippe, the king said, when
showing the party through his library, where he
had many of the English classics: ‘You will
know Milton very well?’ ‘O bless you, yes;
bless you, yes,’ slid the bailie cheerfully, de
lighted that something had been mentioned that
he did know. *Yes, your majesty, I know Mil-
ton very well’ (Milton is a little place in the
neighborhood of Glasgow); ‘we’re just building
slaughter-house there.’
Oarboline, a deodorized extract ol peeroleum, is now
presented to the public, without fear of contradiction, as
ab.-olutely the bett Restorative and li autiiier of the
hair the world has ever produced; it performs what
others only claim for their p ei arations.
An Astonishing Fact.
A large proportion of the American people are to-day
dying from the effects of Dyspepsia or disordered liver.
The result of these diseases upon the masses of intelli
gent and valuable people is most alarming, making life
actually a burden instead of a pleasant existence of on
joyment and usefulness as it ought to be. There is no
good reason for this, if you will only throw aside preju
dice aud skepticism, take the advice df druggists and
frieuds. and try one bottle of Green’s August Flower.
Your speedy relief is certain. Millions of bottles of
this medicine have been given away to t ry its virtues
with satisfactory results in every case. You can buy a
sample bottle for 10 cents to try. Three doses will re
lieve the worst case. Positively sold by all Druggists on
the Western Continent.

Hot ointments or medioments applied to the
breast are absorbed by the glands has been too
plainly demonstrated, heretofore, so we need
not make any remarks about them, but will say
that nurses ought to oonsider before they take a

few hours; it would be wrong,
I will give you here aooording to Varnois and

If it should be impossible for any mother
through this or that oause to nurse her child
search for a nurse, and select one, bodily and
physicaly sound; do not neglect cleanliness, and
her parturitiun should not have been much
later than the mother’s see that the breasts are
in perfect condition, and particularly see to
quality and quantity of milk.
If you oannot find one to suit, then you must

ks cows’ milk is more convenient, and coming
next to woman’s milk, we generally have recourse
t3 It is best if you can give your child milk fresh
from the cow,'still warm; but as this is not al
ways possible we must do the best we can. Be
careful that you get milk from the same healthy
well-kept animal.
Every ohange in food to your oows has its
consequences; if the animal has diarrhoea the
-hild will be most invariably affected alike. It
must be a healthy, and in no way diseased ani
mal. The same can be said of them as I have
remarked of mothers in ill-health.
You should mix cow’s milk, on account of its
constituents, with sugar and water to the follow
ing quantity: Three-fourths of an ounce of
white sugar to one quart of water. Add to the
milk in the first month two-thirds of the sugar-
water in the second and third, one-half, in the
fourth and fifth month, one third, and after that
time give the milk without any water; but the
milk should always be lukewarm.
Now arises the question, bow often to feed
such milk and how much ? It is not so hard a
question to answer as the majority of eager
mothers suppose. Simply feed the child as often
as it cries and as much as it pleas;#,
So long as the milk in above proportions
aerei s with the child, every other kind of food
ig uncalled for. Should such disturbances as
vomiting, diarrhoea, etc., occur, then mix the
milk 'with a teaspoonfnl of the following and
you will soon see its benificial results:

Face to Face With Disease.
How often it happens that although we have wit
nessed the ravages of disease in the case of others,
we disregard his warning signals in our own. It is
onlv when we find him face to face with us that we
really perceive how grim he is. Then, perchance,
when it is too late, medicinal aid is sought. His
avant courier, his forerunner, is physical weak
ness. Fortify the system, and you are armed
against him. The finest tonic for this purpose is
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, which renders diges-
tiou eas3 r and complete, nourishes the system, im
proves the appetite. gives strength, yielding sleep,
counteracts billlousnoss, and keeps the bowels in
11 rst rate order. Leanness and unnatural wanness
and sallowness of the face, are obviated by it, and
so •genial and benelicient are its affects that not
only is the body invigorated and regulated by its
use, but despondency banish from the mind.

TEN THOUSAND CASES !
Thisinstitution has been in successful operation nearly
four years, during which time it has been resorted to by
thousands, from Maine to California, on account of its
wouderfui powers in the prevention aud cure of disease,
and because it is the only one South having the genuine
hot-air Turkish Bath, and all necessary facilities for
Hygienic aud Water-Cure treatment. Whole columns
could be filled w ith well-known names that would testify
to tbe advantages of this treatment, while not a single
case of injury has resulted. The following is one of hun
dreds of cases, of all kinds of chronic diseases, that have
been curediu this institution.
R. W. Martin, of Buford, Ga., had been sevorely af
flicted lor ma-y years with rheumatism of the hands, feet
and legs, to such an extent that he walked with great dif
ficulty, on account of paralysis ot the legs, while his hands
were so disabled that he could not button his clothing,
and the muscles of one hand wese shriveled up to less than
half their proper size. After taking some 20 or 25 of the
Turkish baths, followed by the douche hath, the muscles
were restored to nearly their full volume, and the use of
the hands and legs was almost as pcrlect as before the at
tack.
This is but one of hundreds of cases that may be seen
by consulting Dr. Wilson’s record books, which contain
some ten thousand names. Location, opposite the Mark
