•The glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
i. Cor., iv. 6.
-W
Let there be light, the Father said— k
The veil from Chaos’ lace was torn—
The sun his glittering legions led
Through the gray portals of the morn.
Let there be light, again he said—
For sin hail darkened earth’s fair face;
“Christ beamed upon the cioss” and died,
To light to life a death doomed race,
Mow bound and burdened man beholds
Gods glory in a Saviours face;
That glory to his soul unfolds
Knowledge and light and saving grace.
Beam, blessed light, afar and near ;
Ye ransomed souls reflect His rays;
Iiispel the darkness, dread and drear
And wake the world to songs of praise.

i, instructions were given to take the life of the
wandering exile at all haztrds. .
‘Among the wealthy and powerful friends that
your father left in Europe, was an old English
man by the name of Edward Campbell, whos
life your father once saved at the risk of losing
his own. This will enable yon. to understan
the strength of the friendship that existed be
tween them, as well as the reason why his addi
tions pissed to yen and your brother a ter your
father’s death. He is one of the few who knew
that your father eluded the death-sentence and
safely reached the shores of America.
•Ever watchful of the events around him. and
always alive to the interests of his exiled frtend.
he soon learned the plans ami purposes of le
vator, and made all possible haste to An erica
to warn your father of his danger. He succeeded
in taking passage upon the same vesR ^
brought two of the vile emissaries, ami by vari
ous stratagems that would forma curious chap
ter, learned the outline of their plans. He
reached the somewhat secluded home of your
parents when Julius was about three months
old, and warning them of their danger, prepa -
ations were speedily made to leave ihat part of
th Vherewa8, at that time, living with your
father and mother an orphan girl whom mis
fortunes had made poor and dependant. Being
a near relative ot your mother, she was very
kindly treated and well educated. Her name
was then Florence Nestelle, but now it is plain
Penny Lemon—aunt Fenny Lemon whom yon so
well know, and who loves you so very much.
Your parents did all for me that kmdness and
money could do, and the most pleasing and ef
fectual way that I have of repaying them, is to
devote my life to the service of then- lovely or
phan children. I thus committed myse.f when
- infant—I am thus committed still.
CHAPTER XXII.

So,

•that I love you ns I love my own life. This von
will know when I tell you the real reason why I
Tm with you to-night. There are four or five
inends around you who would shed their last
drop of blood to shield you from harm, and you
have nothing to fear. Then, listen to me, sweet
Nelly while I tell von a part of your history,
and It a more favorable time I will tell you all.
It any part of my strange story causes you pain,
forgive me, for all is to secure your own wel
fare and happiness. As you have "toady ■«-
pected, this is not your room, but one to which
you have been brought for purposes which I
will now explain. , ..
‘All your friends admired the grace and dig
nity of your bearing and your noble features,
dear Nelly, but none know the source of these
extraordinary gifts. They came, my child, with
the heritage of princely blood that flows in your
veins. Your father once wore the Ducal Coro
net and over a hundred battle-fields he has gal
lantly borne the marshal s baton. I know this
sounds strangely to your ears, and is, perhaps,
calculated to make yon think me crazy. But I
am not, nor could anything induce me to de-
^ Be ^'surprised when I tell you that at an
eariv day events are likely to take place in Eu-

of untold wealth and honors of wb, ‘ b y ™ “T**

When our plans are perfected you can, and
must see them all again.
Now, in order to explain all this, let me tell
you who yon are. Your father. General Tar-
renneHarvany, was a pure Frenchman, and in
*Lat country won his honors bv such deeds of
daring and heroism that they passed into a
proverb; but the misfortunes of a long and san
guinary war, in which he was one of the boldest
leaders, finally compelled him to become an ex

now, my dear little Nelly, you can see that I
am vour true friend, and that after ail. I am
nearly a blood relation, of which no one who
knows our family history will ever be ashamed.
•When yonr parents and littla bro her, led by
the strong arm of Edwin Campbetl., now Le
vine Caspar,’the limping hunchback, fleo. from
their comfortable home, I, under the assumed
name of Penny Lemon, accompanied them in
their flight. We went to a part of North Geor
gia some two dav’s journey northwest of this,
where we, by ft fabulous amount of labor and
patience, established ourselves in R comfortable
and seer re retreat Soon after this Campbell re
turned to Europe, leaving your paints, little
Edwin and myself in our secluded bom .
There, almost entirely unseen by the outkide
world, we remained for three long years, when
it was thought expedient for y°"'P^oTof time'
turn Lome, at least for a short period of time.
Under the circumstances, it was thought best to
leave yonr little brother in the dare of Mr and
Mrs. Latrain, who then lived in that part of .he
State, and who, since that time, have b„en the
reputed parents of Julius Latrain—your brother,
the veritable little Edwin Campbell Navarre, or
Harvany, if you please. At that period of his
life Melville Latrain was a gentleman inthefull
sense of the term; but still I remained to wa.oh
over the darling little boy until his parents re
turned; but alas, they never came back .
A few weeks after their departure, Edwin
Campbell, having learned that Lavator had lo
cated your father in the State of North Carolina,
hastened to the mountains of Georgia to again
wun him of his danger. Learning from me
that he and yonr mother had returned to their
former home, he hastened thither, but was too
late ! Both your father and mother had been
two weeks dead, and left you an infant then
from them. If njoessary to secure your protec
tion Lavator biuself shall die. The boundaries
of his life are irked in Edwin Campbell s
mind, and well fill they be followed. How
ever, this will bione only in case of absolute
necessity, and iien yon are in a place of per
fect security.
•The work of fi-night is the first step m this
direction. As son as possible we will go to the
same romantic kme that was occupied by y4ur

Brother was ncwith his parents at the time of
their death, Lafor has no idea of his existence.
For this reasowe do not think it necessary to
conceal him, fleast for the present. Then,

who are abnnatly able and willing to protect
you from all bn. Besides myself and Annette,
