FASHI0N_G0SSIP.
Spring: Styles.
SOME OF THE VERY LATEST NOVELTIES.
In Ouida’s latest novel, “Lady Dolly,” the
mother of the heroine gives her daughter a
chapter of advice as she is about to enter so
ciety. Lady Dolly is a gay mother not yet
turned thirty-four. Her daughter is sixteen.
She professes to be a fair sample of the wo
men of the world. She does not talk much
of morality; it is a subject out of her line;
but she discourses fluently on dress, and the
sum and substance of ner advice is this:
“You need not bother so much about the ma
terial of your dress, but you must have it cut
by the best tailor in Paris. The fit is every
thing.” While this is true in the main, there
is something in the material, or why would
clever designers rack their brains for new
and unique patterns ? The “high art” craze
in dress, so much the vogue in London, lias
been accepted «ith certain improvements in
Paris. The taste is for really beautiful de
signs, and the more picturesque a lady the
more fashionable. The correct thing is to
look as though you had just stepped down
from an old canvas and only wanted a frame
to be a complete picture, The fashions of
our ancestors are revived, and we now see
our great grandmothers as others saw them.
DRESS MATERIALS.
The Paris modistes were ready the first day
of March with the spring fashions, which are
of unusual lieauty and novelty. The new
materials are barege virginie, plain and plaid.
The plaid is made for trimming the plain,
which latter comes in all livery tints. The
printed foulards are flowered all over with
sprigs, in winch were Japanese medallions
and leaves, while in these are curious oriental
designs. Crepe fleur de lis, one of the great
est acbiet ements of manufacturing, is lawn
crape, printed with antique colois, reproduc
ing designs of the old masters in Indian por-
celaine decorative art; colored foliage over
pa le grounds, palms, carnations, water-flags
on roseate and azure crej^e. Another cloth is
Yokohama, plain and figured, manufactured
in robes, with borders frr trimmings, on
plain Yokohama to correspond. Another
novelty is printed cotton faille, with garnet,
maize and blue grounds, and Persian trace
ries and sprig designs. Printed satins will
1 h‘ worn, with balls ami beads, the designs
for which are olive and barley, and these are
sometimes shaded, Grenadines are brocaded
with ball designs and stripes. Colored Siseil-
ienne and shot velvet are fashionable. Jew
elled pins are revived for butterfly bows
worn in the hair and opera caps.
FAVORITE COMBINATIONS.
Plush and velvet will lie worn till late in
the summer, mixed with transparencies and
fluffy muslins. Thick suras, satin finished,
are made up with gold-threaded percale,
called Indienne. The favorite colors are vio
let, heliotrope, lilac and mauve shades mixed,
and all gold shades and all straw eolors are
mixed, making an exceedingly rich and lus
trous effect, The new reds are Mexico flanune, !
flanmie de pouche, garnet and poppy. The 1
fasionable blues tire milkwort, Japanese. Nor
way blue, marine and azure. The browns
are otter, seal, ruddy brown and pheasant.
Other striking colors are nasturtion and old
copper. Cashmeres come in l'elt grays, drab
lavenders, olive greens and such art colors as
ruby, carbuncle, saffron and amber, delicate
and soft, never gaudy. Humming bird tints
also come under the head of art eolors.
RIBBONS.
Ribbons are satin finished. The designs are
Gobelin tajiestry and strijies on the satin
with gauze edges. The lute string of our
grandmothers is revived in cashmere
designs on flanmie doree and maize
grounds. Fringe will be a feature on trim
mings and the styles of this are chenille and
tape gauffered in plain'shades and bright col-
ora hanging to plaid ribbon. This is used for
trimming Iwirege virginie- The ribbon
stripes match the fringe. Bands of deep vel
vet will be worn on summer cloth. Jetj is
used in gimp ornaments and fringe. Bonnet
strings are plain and faced, of satin sublime
and satin duchesse.
In millinery the “queen of the season” is
the capote Velasquez. This bonnet fits close
to the ears and lias a moderate sized rim.
The material may lie of gold cloth trimmed
with poppies and a cluster of shaded ostrich
plumes, with silver tulle or satin strings.
Leghorn and all Italian straws will lie worn.
Other straws are dipped in a chem
ical preparation to reproduce all met
als and precious stones, and colored
threads in other chips. The headgear will
be much trimmed with gold lace, gold net
and shaded plumes. Fashionable flowers
are pansies, carnations, poppies anil apple
blossoms. These are not drooping, but stand
ing on stiff stalks, like marigolds, dahlias,
asters, and dandelions. The favorite shapes
in lionnets are the capote and baby bonnet.
Millinery materials are costly laznpas and
lace Surah. Gilded reptiles will lie worn on
feathers and wide strings- Dress bonnets are
fiat or inflated. 01' course, this is a mat ter of
taste.
THE -TYLE IN Cl'T.
In the matter of dress the Medicis bodices
are revived: open, square in front, with high
ehurez collar. The skirts behind are all
shirred lengthwise, elaborate tabliers are
worn in front puffed en guenie de loup. They
are made to imitate foxglove petal . Casa-
quins are retained, also vests. Seamless
bodice and tunique front are cut in one.
Sleeves are made very flaring and wide in
the arm-hole, tapering at the wrist. Tour-
nours are indispensibie for round skirts, not
gored. No skirt should lie less than two
metres or twenty centimetres at lowest in
circumference. Folds and draperies are put
on full, which gives the effect of full skirts
without Fie weight. Mantles for receptions or
formal calls are long and satin lined, the
sleeves t. e made to turn back. For informal
visits, Sisoilienne, Emmeline, or silk reps.
The s'- '-es and back are cut in one to avoid
armhoi^s and produce the light pelerine ef
fect. The Garrick coat has from three to
five collars trimmed with bead work. Shot t
skirts are the only proper thing for the street.
What a ( lergyaan Says.
Rev. L. Pierce, of Sparta, Ga., father of
Bishop Peirce, of the Methodist Episcopal
Church South, says: “I do most heartily and
earnestly recommend this ‘Oxygen Treat
ment’ to all persons laboring under any suf
fering from cold, cough, etc., and for all
signs or symptoms causing fear of consump
tion.” Send for our Treatise on “Compound
Oxygen.” ft will be mailed free. Address

Prejudice Hills.
“Eleven years our daughter suffered on a
bed of misery under the care of several of the
best (and some of the worst) physicians, who
gave her disease various names but no relief,
and now she is restored to us in good health
by as simple a remedy as Hop Bitters, that
we had poohed at for two years, before using
it. We earnestly hope and pray that no one
else wiU let their sick suffer as we did, on ac
count jf prejudice against so good a medi
cine as Hop Bitters.”—The Parents.
Haunted Me.
Debt, poyerty and suffering haunted me
for years, caused by a sick family and large
bills for doctoring, which did 110 good. I was
completely discouraged, until one year ago,
by the advice of my pastor, I procured Hop
Bitters and commenced their use, and in one
month we were all well, and none of us have
been sick a day since; and I want to say to
all poor men, you can keep your families well
a year with Hop Bitters for less than one
doctor’s visit will cost.—A Workingman.
An Important Geological Fact.
Geology has shown us that nature accom
plishes her greatest revolution in the earths’s
surface conformation slowly. Every year
the river makes its channel deeper, the glacier
wears a deejier gorge in the Alpine rock, and
the ocean tide deposits the sand it has crumb
led from the rocks upon which it breaks.
We note the earthquake ami the devastating
hurricane; but these changes are so gradual
man seldom observes them until the channel
has become overhanging cliffs, or a mountain
lias * disappeared liefore the icy stream, or
the ocean has given us a Florida. Thus it is
in disease. Our attention is attracted I13-
acute diseases, ns fevers, cholera, etc., while
chronic diseases (often the most dangerous
in result,) being slow in their development,
are seldom noticed until they have made an
almost ineffaceable impression upon the sys
tem. Persons lielieving themselves compar
atively healthful are oft dines the victims of
these d's°ases, and only liecome aware of
their presence when relief is almost impossi
ble. Diseases of the liver and stomach are
the commonest of these chronic affections.
Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery and
Pleasant Purgative Pellets are never-failing
remedies for these diseases. They produce a
heathful secretion of the bile, prevent indi
gestion by regulating the bowels, and impart
a vigorous tone to the whole system.
A Gmiil l.iver
Is alwns known by his appearance. A man who
lives comfortably i t home, has good dinners, etc.,
will always show it in his person. Hut there is
another liver more important to mail—it is the
had liver—the liver that should regulate the
whole system. If thatis out of fix, man is good
for nothing—can enjoy nothing—to restore it to
health, use Ilr. Gilder’s l.iver Tills. A few doses
will relieve you.
••I.aiigli anil Grow Fat.*’
This ancient bit of advice is well enough
for “spare” jieople. but how about those that
are already fat! What is to become of them ?
Sit still, and I’ll tell you. After many ex
periments, extending through months of pa
tient investigation and toil, the celebrated
analytical chemist, J. C. Allen, has perfected
and given to the world Allen's Anti-Fat.
Thus far in several hundred cas s this great
remedy has never failed to reduce a corpu
lent p-reon from three to six pounds jier
week. It is perfectly’ harmless and poeitiveiy
effieient. Sold by druggists.
Life in a Pleasure.
Only whfen we are in enjoynieqt of all our
faculties and in lierfeet health. This can
only lie when all the important organs of the
body- are performing their functions proiier-
ly. The Liver is more liable to get out of
order than any other organ, and produces
more unpleasant effects. A dose of L)r. Gild
er’s Liver Pills occasionally, will keep it all
right, or set it right if it has gone wrong.
Sold by all Druggists.
Consumption 4'nred.

sionary the formula of a simple vegetable remedy

tion. Bronchitis, Catarrh, Asthma, and ail Throat

COIFFURE
There is not much change in the way of
wearing the hair. Simplicity is still the
sensible fashion. Loose coils, not pi- its. are
the most worn. There are always some who
prefer an elalau-ate style of hair dressing: for
them are the bands of hair worn down the
back, flattened and looped in place by shell
combs, or waved like single locks. This mass
of hair is frequently formed into the figure 8.
A favorite twisted coil is one of intricate
pattern suggesting the Laocoon agony. The
forehead is r still shaded with hair. ’ Head
dresses are placed far back 011 the head,
tending to fall low down on the neck.
