THE SUNNY SOUTH
MODERN SCIENCE.
ITS TENDENCY TOWARDS MATERIALISM - SEE
MON BY DB. MILLER OF CHICAGO.
There is no escape from the conclnsion
that the whole universe is under the direct
control of an omnipotent power. Life not
only proclaims a life anterior; but matter in
all its forms gives evidence that some power
must have produced it, and that it did not
originate in itself. Again, Nature’s marvel
ous chemistry in the transformation of mat
ter proves that there is a power somewhere
that conducts the process with a wondrous
skill. The sight of a locomotive on a rail
road, dashing through conutries, stopping
at stations, loading and unloading freight
and passengers, gives no stronger evidence
of constructive power to put these trains in
operation than does the movement of worlds,
and stars, and suns. All force proclaims a
power behind and above it. The change of
force, or its discontinuance in any one di
rection, whether in physics or dynamics,
does not necessarily prove a waste of ener
gies, as some have stated. It only indicates
a change or transfer of power in which the
force depends. The stream of water falling
on the wheel connected with any manufac
turing establishment may contain pow«r to
put in motion every wheel, aDd spindle,
and loom along the water-line; but, when
the water is diverted from the channel
through which it reaches the wheel, then
the forces that depend on this water power
cease. But the power itself is not lost.
Every part remains, either static, or sroduc-
ing force m another direction. Force i
power in action, and only changes with the
change of power behind and above it. The
popular theory of the conversation and cor
re lation of forces does not gi ve ns a correct
idea of the relation of power to force. The
idea intended to be conveyed is, that one
force is related to another, and one cannot
exist without an antecedent force. But it
must be remembered that this antecedent
force is dependent on a power behind it.
No matter how long the train of consecu
tive forces may be until the ultimate power
is reached, it will be found in that indefinit
power whose boundless store can never suf
fer loss or gam. It is eternally full and
complete; not one fraction will ever be lost,
The whole universe is one vast storehouse
of power, operating on matter through an
infinit will. The theories of materialists in
reference to the waste of nature’s energies
and the final running down of systems of
worlds have their origin in erroneous views
of the relations o f a primal power to force.
They also fail to recognize the fact tha
while power transfers itself to force, th's
same force will run back to an increase o
power, and instead of physical energies fail
ign and becoming exhausted, there is a con
tent increase of these energies and a widen
ing of the field for their operations. Nature
always wears the bloom of youth in some
part of her empire. To our limited views
change is written on everything. The most
beautiful objects fade from mortal vision.
Like worn-out garments, they appear use
less, but they only pass away to reappear in
finer mold and higher types of organic or
inorganic forms. The power that works
over and above all these changes has no
circle to run,—no beginning and no ending.
We stand in this mighty presence with a
consciousness of independence, and with
natural longings for a continued existence
in the future. Prove to us that Nature’s
forces are waning with age and hastening to
a final decay, and you shake our confidence
in the stability of the universe. But if we
can prove that not one atom of the material
universe, through which the ultimate power
manifests itself, will ever be lost, then we
can see clearly that ail of Nature's forces are
as unending as the power that is behind
them. In the animal economy there is not
only a conservation of force, but a constant
increase growing out of the apparent waste
of energies. In the early settlement of a
new country, men and their beasts of bur
den may wear out their strength in clearing
the ground and preparing the soil for pro
per cultivation. But trom the result oi
these pioneer labors young men grow strong
to labor. Horses are multiplied and loco
motives and mechanical inventions take the
place oi more primitive methods of force.
The City of Chicago has more physical and
mechanical power now than it had thirty
years ago. The old men have wasted their
energies and are passing away, but the
young men who are taking their place with
their increasing numbers and skill have in
creased the forces of the city, which wjll be
transferred to an increase of power in the
future. We see the same process of increas
ing energy in Nature everywhere. The
sterile soil, which at first supports a very
scanty growth of vegetation, has its power
increased by the annual production of an
increasing crop of grass and herbage, and
these, falling back in decay and apparent
death, enrich the soil and increase its pow
er to produce an increase every succeeding
year. If there is an apj are it falling back
in one place there is an evident moving for
ward in aDothc r direction. Power is trans
ferred to force, and force runs back to power,
and thus Nati re will move on forever.
Suns and worlds are but drops in the
shoreless ocean of the infinit. The rela
tions ef one to the other are governed by
laws that work out the designs of an infinit
will. Each part is connected with one
united whole. This view of the subject
does not come in conflict with the predic
tions of St. Peter in reference to the fiery
ordeal through which our earth is to pass
in its Aral change from its present condi
tion. When this purifying process shall
have taken place, then this planet may com
mence a more glorious career, with the
stains of sin—this moral canker of the uni
verse-wiped out forever, and He whose
right it is to reign shall sway His sceptre
over the new earth, where a purer light shall
pour its radiance over all these sinless
shores. The dark shadow of a Materialistic
philosophy that is now seeking to spread
the pall of death over the material universe
is only a forerunner of a reaction that must
certainly follow a fruitless effort to destroy
a belief in the supernatural. All things
must finally yield to the divine impress, and
bow with reverence before this supernat
ural Dower.
planets must continue to move and roll, and
in this grand interchange of electrical and
magnetic forces all will remain to prove an
ever present power over all mateiial forms.
Proud science, in its explorations of the
physical universe, stands dismayed and awe
struck at the magnitudes and numbers of ce
lestial bodies, and their rapid motion through
space. Beyond the border lire of that which
may be known as existing phenomena lies the
unknowable. Among the things that are par
tially known there are many things that sci
ence cannot account for from a materialistic
standpoint. Newton’s law of gravity does not
give a satisfactory reason why the planets
move with different degrees of velocity in elip-
tic orbits, while a line drawn from the centre
of the sun to the centre of the planets would
pass over equal space in equal time in a revo
lution around the sun. If the power of at
traction increases with the square of the dis
tance, why do planets move out from their
perihelion when they are millions of miles
nearer the centre of attraction than they are
in the opposite boint of their orbits? Or why
do comets pass billions of miles into dark
space, and at regular periods return and ap
proach the sun nearer than anypf the planets,
when, according to Newton’s theory, the pow
er of attraction is increased a hundred fold?
By what power do they pass out into the depth
of space again ? These questions can only be
answered by admitting magnetism with grav
ity as a distinct force in the economy ol na
ture. Gravity acts uniformly and constantly
on bodies according to their weignt and spe
cific gravity, while magnetism is repellant or
attractive according to electrical conditions.
These may change with the nature and extent
of electrical excitation. A positive condition
will draw a negative and repel a positive. The
argument I wish to offer from these different
and antagonizing forces, so evenly balanced
The Tortures of Neuralgia.

number of cases wholly removed, by the use I

Matter is mighty, so is a young horse,
Champing his bits, impatient of all force;
But when his master grasps the reins, ’tis then
He finds that horses must submit to men.
Suns and worlds do not run like wild
steeds in the wilderness to graze on unc r-
tain pastures and grow old and die. They
run like celestial chariots on tramways
marked out by an omnipotent band. If
planets are the children cf the sun, they
supply the power through which electiic
streams are thrown back upon this central
orb, and the sun in turn throws back a
mighty flood of electric light upon the
I la ets, not in the form of radiant heat, as
fioja a tremendous blast-furnace, but mate
rials out of which heat is evolved when they
come in contact with the atmosphere of the
planets. This view bridges the mateiialistic
conception of a literal fire on the surface of
the sun consuming crude matter and radia
ting heat for millions of miles through space
so cold that no life known to us could exist
in it. It also delivers us from the fearful
anticipation ot a disastrous ending of our
solar system from a want of fuel to keep up
the fire on the sun. While the planets roll
the sun must shine with electrical beams of
inconceivable power and splendor, and the
for au especial purpose, will be to prove that a
mere chance movement is out of the question.
We may account for force acting in one direc
tion on the general principles of gravitation;
but when we find forces acting in different
directions 011 bodies that move through space
with different rates of speed in different parts
of eliptic orbits, performing their revolutions
with a matematical accuracy that rivals the
best chronometer in the world, we may well
pause and ask: Are all these complicated
movements the work of chance ? If so. then
this chance movement might at any time
move in a wrong direction and run not
through an orderly system of worlds. Then
suns and planets might sink into the dark
night of chaos and the light of the world go
out in an eternal gloom.
We laugh at the cosmos of the ancients and
boast of our progress in knowledge and new
discoveries in science, but the time is not far
distant, and some of us will live to see it, when
many of the present ideas of cosmos will be
classed among the conjectures of the dark
ages. Men of more enlightened views will
come to the front with such conceptions of an
almighty ever present power as will forever
sweep from the' minds of thinking and reason
ing men the materialistic theories that are
now a dark blot on our books on solar phys
ics. An omnipotent creative power will be
vindicated, and the crude ideas we get from
terrestrial mechanics will be changed for the
invisible powers moying on material nature
like the pulsations of one central heart whose
throb iB felt through every part of this great
universe. We may turn our eyes and thoughts
toward every part of this limitless empire and
feel that the God whom all celestial hosts
adore is working there.
And the breathing beauties of field and flood
Outspring from the mind of a perfect good,
And they blend and shine in a perfect whole
And live from the one Creative soul.
The slightest flower that opens below
From tne smile of our God receives its glow,
And the highest angel’s countenance beams
From the great Creator’s presence gleams.
Materialism has stealthily crept into relig
ious sanctuaries under the cloak of science and
ihilosophy, audas such it demands a hearing,
t surveys every mountain-top, and hillside,
and valley. It follows the rill to the river and
the river to the ocean, and says in its cold and
daring speculations to beautiful Nature, “You
are here by chance, and when this chance
macnineiw is run down you will be here no
more.” It looks out upon the world aglow
with life and light, through the boundless do
mains, and claims to hold in its giant grasp a
reat iron wrench to screw the lid upon a coi
ned universe when Nature has passed
through the mortal pangs of her final dissolu
tion. But a higher philosophy and inspira
tion point us to an evw-living power control-
ing all material forms.
The most sublime reflections of an intelli
gent being arise from the thought of our rela
tions to an infinite causation. To abide in the
courts of kings would be considered a great
honor to many of earth’s dwellers. But to
d-vell in the presence of the King of Kings
lifts the conscious soul to interminable pros
pects for the future. While we stand on the
jorder line where the mysterious veil hides
the dwellers on the other side from mortal vis
ion, we may still know that God is working
here and now by a power that is manifested
in the realms of Nature’s laws and gracious
influences. Without this consciousness of a
Divine presence our Bible is a dead letter, our
preaching vain babblings, our prayers a sol
emn mockery, and our hymns and songs of
praise an idle amusement. But with an assu
rance that the invisible power that surrounds
us on every side is photographing our char
acter in the light of His own pure nature, and
that these pictures of our character will be ex
hibited in the light of eternity, we have in
numerable motives to act well our part m our
social, moral, and religious relations during
our brief stay in the present life. Then our
acts of devotion will have more of meaning
and less of mystery, and those years of
shadows and dawuiugs will end in the light
where no shadows fall, and where brighter
prospects shall beckon us onward through the
eternal ages. *

ease. The idea that a medicine is applicable
10 one ill only has long since been exploded
bv practical demonstration. A preparation
may contain a number of ingredients, each
adapted to a purpose without interfering
with the functions of each other, besides be
ing particularly efficient as a whole. Espe
cially can this be said of natural medicines
As an ilustration we can refer to the Seven
Springs Iron and Alum Mass, nature’s own
design, which is perhaps used more success
fully for a larger scope of complaints than
any artificial preparation known. Its com
position is of such a nature as to permeate a
system, search diligently for defections, and
eradicate all traces of disease. It assists di
gestion, preventing and curing dyspepsia;
cleanses the blood, and invigorates the body.
In the treatment of diseases peculiar to fe
males it has no equal on earth, being both
sure and direct. Diseased urinary organs
are readily relieved, and liver and kidney
affections and bladder troubles cured by its
use. Those who have used it testify, in al
most every instance, to its special curative
qualities and recommend it as one of the best
and most reliable remedies known. The price
has been reduced and is within the reacii of
all. Try it once, and satisfy yourself. '
