THE SUNNY SOUTH*
FRANK STANTON’S COLUMN.
When the Candidate Comet.
When the candidate comes
With a thunder of drums,
Come out, little voter, come out!
With his bluster and brag
And his Mexican flag,
Come out, little voter, come out!
Make a dash
For the cash—
Let him win in a dash—
Come out, little voter, come out!
When the candidate stands
With the votes in his hands,
Come out, little voter, come out!
When he lays down the law,
Give a hearty hurrah!
Come out, little voter, come out!
Come out
With a shout
That’ll ring round about—
Come out, little voter, come out!
When the candidates go
In the office—O ho!
Get out, little voter, get out!
In his sleek beaver hat,
On his soft Brussels mat—
Get out, little voter, get out!
Get out!
Face about!
Or “Police!” he will shout—
Get out, little voter, get out!
To Li, or Not to Li.
O Li Hung Chang
Round the circle swang,
And the bells in his welcome rang and rang!
But we want to know,
Ere we let him go—
While the whistles blow and the fire-bells clang,
And the broad flags wave to the autumn sky—
Has Li Hung Chang,
Or Chang Hung Li?
A Dream of Arcady.
This world will know a happy state
When rises to the view
A stump for every candidate,
And a big, fat office, too!
A big, fat office—whew?
Where the salary falls due,
And every day,
Vou draw your pay,
And the salary falls due!
When every corner in the state
Has offices to win,
And fast as one's rubbed off the slate
Another asks you in!
A big, fat office—whew!
Where the silver rains on you!
And every day,
You get your pay,*
And the salary falls due!
A Song of Politics.
Politics, politics, politics!
Whip up the horses and mules,
Shut up the doors
Of the churches and stores—
Have a holiday time in the schools!
Politics, politics,politics!
Stand all the people in line;
Make it a law
That each man shall hurrah,
And walk in the meetin’ and jine!
"Politics, politics, politics!
Country is all in a blaze;
From Billville to Brown
They are laying it down
And the platforms are blocking the ways!
Politics, politics, politics!
What will the end of it be?
The weather is mellow,
Hurrah for the fellow
Who will put in a ballot for me!
Fair Warning.
September
For November
And December
Is a rhyme;
Let the poets all remember,
And hand in stuff in time.
Good Times.
The^chimney’s ready for the logs,
The harvest song is ringin’ sweet,
(Happy now, believers!)
An’ apple cider’s hard to beat.
(Happy now, believers!)
Throw the white sand on the floor,
(Happy now,believers!)
Bring us in one fiddle more.
(Happy now, believers!)
Fall Time.
Fall time in Georgia—
Ain’t it out o’ sight!
Hick’ry nuts a droppin'—
Fires blazin’ bright.
’Taters in the ashes—
Apples on the shelf!
Pass aroun’ the cider
Till you hardly know yerself!
Fall time in Georgia—
Woods in gold and brown,
Wagon loads o’ cotton bales
Rollin’ into town!
Rabbits fat and frisky
Squirrels all about,
‘ Rp^er” at the 'possum tree,
Bsyin’ of him out.
Fall time in Georgia—
All the girls in line;
Fellers, take yer pardners.
An I’ll look out fer mine!
Fiddles goin’ lively,
(Winter’s head of May!)
Swing an’ kiss your sweethearts*
Pance till break o’ day.
