m issive stone structures which gird the
canals of the city, it was necessary to
driva piles upon which to erect the
foundations, 'then .‘too. Venice is a very j
old city; so old, in fact, Tiuat it stopped
growing agus ago. certainly centuries ;
ago, having been founded in the year
-tsi.
In addition to its unstable foundations,
its great age and its long years of neg- j
lect. Venice has also suffered from re-
pcutv.l shocks of earthquake. The old
foundations were made of a mortar of i
Kami and lime, and the continual oozing of
water into them has disintegrated this j
plaster. Much of the evil which has j
fallen upon Venice is traceable to thej
the famous picture of the Virgin, be-
lieved to have been painted by Saint
I.uka.
A C!TY ON PILES.
Professor Edward Suers, the well-
known Austrian geologist, declares that
it is surprising that the ground upon
which Venice is built, has supported for
so many centuries the enormous weight
of buildings upon it. The foundations are
built upon piles, which in the course of
time become soft. Gases are generated
from vegetable substances, and when
these escape tlie ground sinks and se
rious subsidences occur.
Looking towards the restoration, Com-
mendutor Boni recommends the removal
of the mosaic and marble from inside
the Basilica of gt. Mark’s cathedral. He
says: “Ancient buildings must be treat

The report of Professor Manfredi and
Signor Marangoni, recently submitted,
gave some alarming information about
the condition of St. Mark's. The great
est danger to this basilica is in the foun
dations, which have been constantly giv
ing way in divers directions. All the
walls ^ifrow such cracking and weaken
ing that it leads to the conclusion that
under the magnificent dress of marble and
mosaic is concealed the most alarming de
crepitude.
For fame time past the government has
allowed $10,000 a year for keeping St.
i'he people of Venice are now hoping
that the measures which have been un
dertook'.! to restore st. Marks cathedral
and other ancient buildings of the famous
city, do not come too late. So far as
rnonej' is concerned, Kurope, and Amer
ica ulso, will leel it a privilege to do their
part in saving the glorious building from
the fate that threatens it.

A Catarrh Cure
THAT CURES
Millions of men, women and children suffer
the tortures of catarrh and have tried various
remedies without being cured. The trouble
with nearlv all so-called catarrh medicines is
that they do not reach the seat of the disease,
but merely afford a slight temporary relief
of most apparent symptoms. Many do not
even do this.
Catarrh is NOT a Blood Disease
and none of the patent nostrums claimed to
cure catarrh by purifying the blood are of
value. This fact has been repeatedly proved
by careful tests and any good physician will
tell you so. Years of study and experiment
by great specialists have resulted in the prep
aration of a remedy that absolutely cures
even the deepest seated and longest stand
ing cases of catarrh by going directly to the
seat of the disease, healing the inflamed mem
branes, expelling the nauseous phlegm and
destroying forever the very germs of the dis
ease. This remedy is
