THE RECENT ATTACK ON M’CLELLAN 8
FLEET AND ENCAMPMENT-
Captain Miles C. Macon, of the Fayette Artilc
lery, returned to this city Saturday evening, and
Itoqi him we have obtained some nterestiog
f&ots connected with ihe expedition.
General Pendleton, with many powerful batter*
.et*. left Richmond Tuesday morning and arrived
in. the neighborhood of Cuv Point on Wednes*
day. The attack on the enemy'a fleet was to have
been made that night, but owing to a misunder
standing of orders ibe different batteries failed to
read*irons at tbe appointed place, and it was, of
necessity, postponed.
On Thursday, Colonel Brown and Captains
Macon and Watson, the latter of the second
Howitzers, made a tbon ugh feconooifcsance of
the river and the south bank opposite McClel*
fan's encampment. At Mar cock’s Lauding,
directly opposite Westover, they tied their
horses ia the woods and crept close to the river
back: A large and splendid steamer said to be
occupied as quarters by McClellan's principal
officers was lytog close ashore at the Westover
Landing. Bet*sen her and the Southern shore,
and as far as -the eye can reach up and down
the stream were great numbers of large steamers
"and transports. Some of the latter were within
four hundred yards of. the Southern shore.
Tde sound of voices in conversation were plain
ly heard. vVmle the officers were making their
steamer arrived from below and
oast anchor in the midst of the fleet. Immediately
ajsumber of voices f-om the vessels were beard
calling for the New York Herald and enquiring
what Pupa was doing. To the enquiry about
Pope, a man on bo:*.rd the steamer replied. l4 Qh,

listing completed their recooncisaqce* our
office's withdrew. At a quarter to twelve o'clock
our Batteries were in toe positions assigned
them. The Hanover battery was stationed at
Coggio’s Point ; the Fayette Artillery at May-,
cacx’s, half a mile below ; the Second Howitzers
were in position just below Maycock's, and the
other batteries still further down the banks. ;By
a precouceried plan, the tiring of Long .Tom by
the Hanover battery was to be tne signal for the
other battened 10 open Are. It was a calm, styr*

be the officers’ quarters, was seen at that late
hour- brilliantly illuriduated by lights which
twinkled through every window. The witching
hour of'rugbl drew on apace as our men anxious
ly awaited the signal for opening tire.
“Eight bells*’ was struck by the gunboats in
he river; the sentries cried “twelve o’clock—
ah's wait!” As the last word died upon the ear a
of flame darting out from Coggin’a.Poiut,
fonewed by a deafening report, toid that Lo«g
To n bad spoken, and the fi/bt was begun.—
Simultaneously bier* followed bfcze from point
to point miles down the river. Tte fl-.'e’t was in
an instant thrown into commotion. Yells, and
oaths, aud shrieks, miagled with the repeated
cry of “put out that light,’’ were heard from
every steamer and schooner at once. And very i
qu.ckly were the lights extinguished. But our
pieces having been previously trailed into ranere.
thi9 was a matter of small consequence. For
three quartern of an hour our lire was pourec
forth uninterruptedly. The crashing of our sbo
through the ships’ timbers could be bea r d d
every discharge, and hundreds of the shells we:e
seen* to explode on board the vessels.
The order from General Pendleton was to /re
thirty rounds to each gun and withdraw. We
hud udariy fired this complement before the /uns
boats bad steamed up and cleaned, for avion

we were reireatiug. Atuioat every shot reJ'withio ,

o'clock the last of our men bad retired ft a sate
distance, but the gunboats continued to stell the
shore for hours afterwards.
Oar loss ;« this engagement was Wiliam T.
Dalton, killed, and Thomas Farquhar aot Pat
rick Graham, ot the Hanover battery, wojnded
by one of the enemy’s shells. Alexander Thicker,
of the Page battery, wounded by the premiture
explosion of a gun; and three men, of the Al
bemarle battery, seriously wounded by tbeup*
setting of one of our caissons during our re
treat.
Os the dama&e done the enemy we. are yet
without the ni ■fcua of making an estimate, his
low .if life and property must, however, have
ternb’y large. Our gunb threw at lea.-t
between twelve and tlfteeu hundred shot aod
shell, and the remotest object of which we fired
wag within poin'-fflank range of our smallest
guns. The most ot the vessels were but from
five hundred yards to a half mile distant. During
the engagement the crash of our shot through
the wooden sides of the vessels and steamer*
could be distinguished above the roar of the
guns, and our shell! were seen to explode over >
and within the vessels, and a number of them
within MepleUas’s encampment, on the opposite ;
shore.
On Saturday morning Captain Micon rode from
Petersburg in the direction of the scene of the
previous day’s engagement. The gunboats had
renewed the shelling of the shore. Near City
Point Le met one of our videttes, who had just
been driven from the rivet bank by the enemy's
projectiles, and who had been present during
our attack, and remained after our artillery had
retired. This picket assured Captain Macon thai
tfcirtyvone of the enemy’s transports bad b‘eb
sunk where they lay at anchor, and that a num
her of others had been towed down the stream
.Friday morning in a shattered conditi n. tie
t-Isj stated that the tine steamer to which we
iiave ailu-Jed to as the officers* quarters was lit*
er&lly torn to pieces. One wheel-house was
shot and there seemed to be scarcely a
woole plank on her side 9 and upper deck.
The Petersburg Express of yesterday states
that on Frid-y there were ninety vessels, ofali
kinds, remaining in the river near Berkeley,
and forty-five had been towed away.
We are'reiiUbly informed that, o Q Saturday
afternoon, McCiellan sest a messenger under a
uag of truce, to inform General Lee that., in a
day or two, laden with, paroled Cod
.ederace prisoners might be expected, up James

INDIGNATION MEETING VERSES.
"We have received a v*rv indignant letter
tvm an American correspondent, who states that
il his opinion, poets have no right to compose
Vtrscs which wifi not lend themselves to para*
phrase. He has been trying, he says, all the morn
nit* (and with his coat off.) to fit the Laureate’s
Hiiaklava poem to the subject ot the advance of I
the grand urmy of tLe Potomac, ami in a per sect
fury he encloses this specimen, as all that he has
be»n able to make fit. He considers that the con
duct of the English at Balakiava in being only
6<J), and that of the Laureate in not making
verses that tvouid do for the far more glorious
60U 000, are quite offensive, and he threatens that
when the South is put down we shall hear more
of it. Meantime we hasten to try and assuage
his fiery wrath by printing his lines;
THE VALIEV OF MUD.
Into the Valley of Mud,
Wen? the six hundred thousand—
All cf them awfully
splashing their trowsers.
Officers on the right ot them,
Officer* on the left of them,
Officers in the middle of them,
Blustered and thundered.
But in that Virginia pluck,
Stiffly each hero stuck :
And all at McClellan’s pluck,
Gloriously wondered.
In they went, on they went—
Fat sines aud thin bones,
’Till they sunk over shoes,
And, indeed, over their shin-bones.
Here c ur correspondent, apparently in the same j
