FROM NEW ORLEANS—FEDERAL GUNBOATS
REPULSED.
The New York papers have news from New
Orleans to the 7th, by the steamship Potomac. An
expedition went up the river to Donaldsonville,
on the Ist, to take possession of a lot of cattle
which had been sent from Texas for the rebels.
The gunboats Sciota, Itasca and Kinoohad, how
ever, already hold of them, numbering in ail
1,600 fine beeves. While passing down the river
with this welcome freight, a rebel battery about
three miles below Donaldsonville opened fire on
the boats. The Sciota was repeatedly struck, and
Lieut. Swacey killed, and were also several men
on the other boats. After doing all the damage
possible to the flotilla, the rebels abandoned the
battery.
THS END OF GSN. STUART’S BAID.
The Washington Star, of Wednesday afternoon,
says;
We are sure, from information upon which we
can rely, that after reaching Leesburg on Sunday
morning last, the rebel General halted bis force
there, between 2,000 and 3,000 cavalry, with three
pieces of artillery, until near noon of the next
day. Meantime,"a considerable force of the ene
my, consisting of infantry and artiLery, ap
proached within supporting distance of Stuart,
coming down the Winchester turnpike. General
Lee’s idea evidently was, that a dash would be
made with a small force, from this vicinity, upon
Stuart at Leesburg, expecting that he was there
entirely unsupported. Due care, however, was
taken by Stuart to move off for Winchester ere a
lapse of time sufficient for a considerable force
rom the vicinity to get up to him.
new yobk market— gold 135!
The New York Herald, of 17th, says:
The stock market was active yesterday, and
prices were higher at the close, after some sharp
fluctuations. Gold opened at 135, fell to 132 X,
a>-d closed at 135. Demand notes closed at about
120. Exchange fluciuated between 148 and 149.
Money was in request at 4a5a6 per cent.
Produce yesterday, both foreign and domestic,
with few exceptions, was quite firm, and prices
were either sustained or met with a further ad
vance. The movements seemed to hinge on the
currency, and sympathized with its fluctuations,
which can only recede or advance in proportion
to the amount of paper currency put in circula
tion.
Cotton was less buoyant; but the demand was
good; while the sales embraced about 1,800
bale?,’on the basis of ot?X a 6l%c., a good part at
61c., with few or no sellers at the close at 61%c.
The flour market was firm and active, and
clesed at a further advance of 10a25c. per bbl.
Wheat opened heavy, but rallied near the close,
and with tolerably free sales closed at the previous
dav’s prices.
Corn was unchanged, while sales were made to
a fair extent, closing at 67a68c. for good and
sound Western mixed.

desperate fight on the altamaha.
Prom the Savannah Republican, Oct, 23.
Wayme County, Oct. 21.
Mr. Editor : A desperate fight took place last
night between a detachment of Capt. Wm. M.
Hazzard’s company, “Glynn Guards,” under
Serg’t Alex Burney', and a Yankee barge. Serg’t
Burney, with three men, Privates Palmer, Odum
and May, went down the Altamaha river in purs
suit of a boat load of negroes that were attempting
to make their escape- They rowed up to a large
boat, which they ordered to come to. The boat,
though crowded with persons, steered off. Serg’t
B. started in pursuit, and when within thirty yards
the barge grounded. A volley of musketry was
poured into Serg’t B.’s party, which did no harm.
The Sergeant and his men then deliberately fired,
when another volley responded, killing Private
Palmer and seriously wounding Serg’t B. and
Private May. Thus wounded these gallant men
fought on, until the barge pushed off and effected
its 'escape. Several volleys were fired on both
sides.
Sergeant B. is struck in two places, May in four
or five. Sergeant B. is confident that his party
killed several ot the negroes.
A portion of the negroes taken this morning
state that the barge was protecting the retreat of
the negroes; in this they have failed, and it is to
be hoped that the fugitives may all be taxen,
as Colonel Clinch, with a good force, is in hot
pursuit.
The army has tost a brave and noble soldier in
Davis Palmer, one who fell in the prime of life, as
it became a Georgian. Sergeant Burney and the
two survivors, if spared to their country, will
always be respected and admired for their noble
conduct in this our first engagement with the ene
my’s barges. Yours &c, Citizen.
A Drafted Major General.—The Mansfield
(Ohio) Herald tells cf a leading citizen of Galion,
a former militia major general, who was drafted
on Wednesday last. “ Supposing that, of course,
he ccald not be drawn for anything but the posi*
tion he held in the militia, he donned his major
general’s uniform, cocked hat, sword and spurs,
went to Columbus, and reported himself as ready
for a command. He was considerably surprised
when he was told that they were not drafting
generals, only privates. The “malicious man”
came home with a flea in his ear. *
THE YANKEES LANDING IN CAROLINA.
From the Savannah Repuhliean, Oct. SB.
Early yesterday morning dispatches were rew
ceived here stating that the enemy, in force, was
landing at two points on the Carolina cost, viz :
Mackay’s Point, below Pocotaligo, and Seabrook s
Island. Mitchel is evidently resolved to make a
demonstration somewhere, probably against the
Cbarleaton A Savannah Railroad, preparatory to
an attack on tbe former city. There were thirteen
vessels below Pocotaligo, from which the troops
had debarked.
We have heard no further particulars up to the
hour of writing, and can only add for the present
that the Yankees will meet with a warm reception
whenever they may attempt to advance into the
country.
We are also informed that appearances in the
Great Ogeechee would seem to indicate early
operations in that quarter. A mysterious looking
craft, without masts or smoke stacks, entered
Ossaoaw Sound Tuesday last and joined the
blockading fleet. It is probably a steel clad
vessel ot some sort, and designed, when all
things shall be ready,-to run the gauntlet of our
batteries on the river. We shall probably hear
something of her movements in the course of a
few days.
LATER—THE ENBpY IN POSSESSION OF THE ROAD.
Late in the afternoon there was quite an excite
ment in our streets over the report that dispatches
of an important character had been received at
headquarters. Upon enquiry we find their pur*
port to be as follows : The enemy, after landing
at Mackay’s Point, marched across the country
some fourteen miles to Coosawhatchie, a small
village on the Charleston and Savannah Railroad,
some forty miles distant from Savannah, and a
little over sixty from Charleston. Colonel Walker,
who had possession of the place with a small
force, disputed their entrance for a short time ~
but, being overpowered, retired to Salkahatchie
bridge, with a loss of a few men killed and
wounded. Here the Yankees took possession of
tbe road and the bridge—they have probably
burned the latter. As a consequence, no train ar
rived from Charleston last evening. The tele-,
graphic communication between here and there is
also interrupted—probably the wires cut by the
enemy.
We are inclined to think the enemy, by this
movement, will get far more, than he bargained
for.
We take the following paragraphs from
the Atlanta (Ga.) Southern Confederacy, of Oct.
22d;
Railroad Explosion.—The boiler of the engine
of the down freight train on the State road ex
ploded yesterday morning near Calhoun. The
wood passer had his thighs badly fractured, and
his injuries are supposed to be mortal. The en*
gineer was injured more or less, and another per
son badly scalded. The train and disabled en
gine were removed before the down passenger
tram came along.
The Escaped Tories.—ln addition to the four
mentioned by us in our last as having been re*
covered, three have been killed by the soldiers
who were on the watch looking out for them.
They were discovered trying to pass tbe pickets
and get away, and would not halt when called
upon; hence they were shot.
How terrible is the doom of such transgres*
sions I ’
Small Pox.—There is now a man in this city
who is sick, having a high fever on him, and who
had an opportunity to take small pox about long
enough ago to have it now show itself. Doctor
Logan thinks it altogether probable that the case
is one of small pox. Colonel Lee promptly pro
vided a pest house beyond the city limits, where
the man will be kept and strictly guarded.
Time and again, we have called upon and urged
the people of this city to be vaccinated. Some
have had the precaution to do so, while a large
number have not. Now, the loathsome disease is
on both sides of us and in our city. Will the
people now be vaccinated, if a chance is offered ?
The Government has done all it could by provid
ing every facility to have every body in this city
well vaccinated. If the disease spreads among
us, let the blame for all the evil consequences
rest upon the heads of those who have neglected
their duty in this respect.
We clip the following paragraphs from
the Richmond (Va.) Examiner, of Oct. 21:
From Kentucky.—The War Department re
ceived yesterday two letters from General Bragg,
which it has not been deemed consistent with the
public good to lay before the people. We are,
therefore, most unwillingly forced to the conclu
sion that the news they contain is unfavorable to
the cause of the Confederacy, though we hear it
stated by persons who have enjoyed a glimpse at
the documents, that Gen. Bragg claims a brilliant
victory at Perryville, and says he only retreated
when he found bis communications threatened.
From Northern Virginia.—lt will be seen by
our extracts from late Northern papers that on
Wednesday and Thursday last two corps of Mc«
Clellau’s army crossed the Potomac, tbe one at
Harper’s Ferry and the other at Shepherdstown,
and occupied, respectively, Charlestown on the
Winchester railroad, and Kerneysville on the
Baltimore and Ohio railroad. Charlestown is
fifteen, and Kerneysville about twenty miles
distant from Winchester. Until Thursday, the
main body of Gen. Lee’s army is supposed to have
been west of Oppequan creek, and between Bunk
er’s Hill and WincDester. By arrivals last night
direct from the latter place, we learn that on
Thursday our army made a movement in the direc*
tion of Kerneysville and Charlestown. If this re* ' ’
port be correct, and we see now no special reason
to discredit it, the great battle so long expected m
that quarter, both by the North and South, may be
near at hand.
While McClellan is pushing forward on the up
per Potomac, Sigel’s cavalry are patroling the
country from Alexandria to Warrenton. A body
of a hundred of them made a descent upon the
town of Warrentown early on Saturday morning,
and drove out a company of forty of our cavalry,
who were in possession, and killing their captain
and wounding three of the men. Fugitives from
the place state that our men killed eleven of the
Yankees, but this is received with much allow
ance by persons familiar with troopers stories.
The fight, if there was one, took place in tbe main
street of Warrenton.
The report of this affair at Warrenton is brought
by persons who left the neighborhood yesterday
morning.
REBEL NAVY.
Gulf Squadron Correspondence Philadelphia Press.
In connection with this, I may as well give the
names of Confederate armed vessels, as far as
ascertained by me. They are the steamer Florida,
formerly the Oreto, commanded by Captain Maffit,
and carrying ten nine inch Blakely patented rifled
guns. The gunboat Alabama, Captain Semmes,
lately of the Sumter, which carries ten eleven-inch
Blakely guns, and the steamer “290,” Captain
Hamilton, carrying ten eleven-inch Blakely rifle
guns. These three are said to be now at Mobile.
The “290” was built by the subscription of two
hundred and ninety British merchants, and thence
takes its name. There are said to be four other
steamers, whose names I cannot now obtain, and,
in addition a steam iron-clad frigate, recently
built at Gaston, below Liverpool, nominally for
the Italian government, and with an Italian name,
which recently left England with a full crew,
chiefly of Italians, under command of Captain
Arthur Sinclair, once of our navy, who crossed
the Atlantic in the Bull Dog. The Italian name
of this vessel is to be changed to that of Jefferson
Davis.
REBELLION IN INDIANA-
Cincinnati, Oct. Bth.-—The Indianapolis corres
pondent of the Commerciai says the conperneads
of Hartford, Blackford county, collected on Mon*
day and forcibly resisted the draft. They de*
stroyed the ballot box and enrolling papers, and
either forced or scared the commissioners and
