As She matter oi obtaining materia! for tbe man
ufacture of paper aas b.’ccme one cf erect im.
portancs and diiEcuity. I feel that it ts my duty
to lay before you a brief description of a process
for producing the pu p from any vegetable ti.u
teriai containing fibres, as witnessed ov me dur
ing our visit to the establishment engaged in its
production, while in Sew York Cttv, five vears
ago. By so doing I may inraw sufficient light
upon the subject for some enterprising men to
carry out and perfect the same in our Confede
racy ; thereby, not only doing a great good to
onr country, but at the same time securing to
thems.'ives a meat lucrative business, botn now
and hereafter. The machinety was simpiv a
Steamsbnler about twenty four inches m diame
ter and twenty feet long, with a!! the usual at
tachments; feed-pump, gauge-cocks, safety and
blow-off valves, and steam gauge. On each side
of the boiler was placed a wrought iron cylinder,
nine inches iu diameter and fifteen fee; larg, con
nected with the ooiler by a steam pipe with a
throttle vaiveperfec-.lv tight -in it, so as to let the
steam m;o tbe wrought iron cylinder at pleaacte,
one end es each cylinder having a perfectly steam
tight heal, riTited or batted fast, the other end
having a head made very strong of wrought iron,
with a binge attaching it to the bottom oftoe
cylinder ; this head was closed by ra sing, and
held sufficiently hard against the end ot toe cyl
inder, so as to lorm a "steam-tight joint, but’so
arranged that by a blow or jars, it could be ins
stan'iy detached, excepting at the joint, when tne
heal would fly off.
The material used was onr common fishiig.rod
cane/rout out cane-brakes, wn.ch was firs: soak
ed in water until thoroughly saturated A bun
dle of canes remaining their fail length was then
put into each cylinder, when the"heads cf tbe
cylinders were closed, Steam being raised in the
boiler up to two hundred pounds pressure to
the square inch, the valves laths steam pipes’
connecting cylinders are opened, and the canes
subjected to the action of this pressure of steam
for fitteen minutes. The valves are now shut and
the heads of the cylinders disengaged, and the
canes are thrown from the cylinders, a mass of
fibre and dußt, resembling a bundle of oakum,
not a vestige of cane in us former state being
visible. Waen tae d-siharge takes place it re
sembles that of a smad field-piece.
Should the steaai be let off gradually, no
Change would take place iu the caues. This" fibre
is course and harsh; it is now shaken to tree it
from dust, and buiied with a strong alkali to dis
solve the gluten, which cements the natura! or
ultimate fiores together that term the long coarse
fibre obta.ned m the first process. Tbis again is
submitted to the pressure cf steam, but tbe de
tails of this portion of the process I do not re
member. After tuts second process, the fibre ts
bleached, and the result ts a fibre finer than any
cotton I ever saw. The pulp is a most beautiful
article, perfect in texture and uniformity, and as
white as saow.
The pa't taat steam takes in thus dissolving
the pro-iuc.i ms ot nature of months or years in
a few m o-utes to its former condition of dust,
must be explained io give light to the process.
Tbe fibre wuich i hare desigutilei as the ulti
mate fibre is in the cane, about one eighth of an
inch long, and finer than auy flair or cotton; these
nature ootids side by stoe, overlapping eacb
other, the j-i nts being thereby al.araate on each
side, bu tae last fibre being always one half its
length i j advance of its predecees ..-.and held fast
to the o her by a gum or gluteu. These combin
ed form the long note, tunning the leugth of
the phut or tree ; these are "08110
held together as one stalk or tree, by a I
mass of eeilulose material, resembling sponge !
or coral •.i extremeiy minute texture. Tins con- 1
veys the moisture irmu tUe earth to Ihed the tree, I
and tnus mold the fibre. Wusn cacti of these j
