astonished and disgusted us as the announce

one army, and that the grandest, noblest,
proudest one within nil onr land—the army of
Northern Virginia, under the leadership of
the accomplished I as, with such corps com

the battles around Richmond, last Jimp and
July year, the muster roll of the gian.l army
called for 120,000 men, and that there w.-re,
never more than 46,000 in the field, and tnr
ther, that at the battle of Sl.arpsburg, lust
September with a master roll of 140,00, lien.
Leu could only bring 35,000 to face the hosts
of McClellan .
We do not give full credence to this shame
ful rep ii and hope and believe that the mini
bm of stragglers and deserters has been
greatly exaggerated. We fear, however, that
a very Urge proportion of the army, possibly
one-half, is always out of the way, from « ne

Oar people will recollect Uiat -wo or tbrcc
or jnore months ago we hear.l a great ilea!,
and that continually, of the wonderful things
the peace men of the North were going to
do. Many in our midst strong hopes of
peace on the action of the malcontents in
Lincoln’s realm. Many even were profrotins
terms of peace, inviting the North west to a
Irce use of our Mississippi, aijilucianlly going
so far as to ask the North-western States, to
abandon New England and t e Middle States,
and cotoe with us under onr pro-slavery Con
stitution. But since about the 4th of duly,
since the capitn!atio?i of Vicksburg and the
retreat fronr Pennsylvania, we ha/e heard
scarcely a whisper of peace from beyond the
Potomac. The people of the United States
have become elated at their successes, and
have gone crazy again on the .sensation ol
crushing the rebellion and subjugating the in
surgent States.
\Vc confess that we have always built strong
hopes on the division and disaffection ot the
Northern people, the gradual but sure growth
ol an out-spokey peace party, and the final
outbreak of the insurrectionary elements
which exist among the enemy, but which, by
ouc means or other, has so far been smothered
or checked. But we have always held that
the only way to build up a peace party
among the Yankees, and to-set at liberty tin
fnrioiil opposition of the ant.i-Republicans,
was by successful war on'Lincoln’s armies in
the field. We stiff have great expectations
from tie p lice men ol the North and the ex
plosive wrath ol the opposition masses, bat
we were ti<*v*-r more firmly convinced than
now of the essential pnportnpce. of thick,
lie<t and heavy blows from the Confederate
armies, in Older to give v itality, system and

To those wbo aro bankrupt in purse and

and the capacity to feel personal degradation,
it is idle to talk They must simply be madv
to serve a good purpose, for the benefit of
their fellows and their betters. Those whose

that no pea -o eamseeure them in the erj y

tbe sword, and that the most latal delusion
- l w r conjured up is the idea that it is possible
uow to lie assured of their property in any
event bat that of the triumphant success ol
Confederate arms.
lalk about reconstruction of the Union
why the thing is utterly impossible, impracti
cable and.absurd. The Union .can not be re
stored or reconstructed, because the very nr
tnre of the contest, the magnitude of it, the
blood of it, the continuance and the cost o£-it
wholly and forever preclude the idea. It is
sheer nonsense to talk of the Constitution as
it is, and (he Union as it was It Ls beyond
the power of man ever again to make the
b iiion what it was—and its Constitution is a
dead letter, trampled under foot, a hissing and
a scorn among its own worshippers. There is
I*o retreat for us now, if we were so base as
to wish it. We can not Inru back if we
would, and we ought not if we could. There
are only two stern alternatives left us, victory
oi ;übjiieat'i#ii, and if we do uot strain every
nerve to accomplish the first the last will be
I certainly oar portion, and that can not. now
be evaded by any sort of compromise To
sland still is ruin, tc go back is ruin, to go
forward can but be ruin, and may, and we be
lieve will, result in triumph.
Those who imagine that any terms can
b? coin now be had of the enemy, except by
successful war,.short of unconditional submis
sion to their will and their bah- and their
lusts, or that any tiling of either honor, proper*
ty or light can be shared by proposing peace,
understand neither- tlie situation of ajluiia, nor
the Yankee character. After more than two
years of nearly successful conflict we ure now
severely pressed, uud tried us by an ordeal of
tire. Many of the enemy exult, .gloat over,
the idea that we are almost conquered. They
feel as if they were just about to put their
heels on our prostrate necks. What, effect on
them would an appeal for peace have '! VY*uuld
