standing the great disparity in the forces ot the
two hostile armies. The ground was more in our
favor than it was at Fredericksburg, where Ueu
Longstreet is said to hate estimated that Lee s
army wua equal to Sod.vOO men. And yet we ,
gained the bailie ot Fredericksburg and lost tba.
ot Missionary Ridge.
Hut let u a taxe up the painful narrative at the
beginning, and see now this great misfortune, it
not this grievous disgrace, has befallen the Cou-.
Mountain was evacuated last night, it
being no longer important to ua after the loss of
Lookout or Will's Valley, and no longer tenable
anaiast such an overwhelming force as General
Gr»ni had concentrated around Chattanooga.—
tieuer U liragg abandoned also the whole of U <at,
tunoog valley, and the trenches and breastw rks
running along the foot of Missionary Ridge and
b valtev to the bus© ot Lookout* und
moved bis troops up to the top of the ndge. 1
was found necessary to extend bis right well up
towards the Chicamiiuga near its mouth, in cou
b. queues of the heavy forces which the em my
had thrown up the i-ver in that direction. The
Tennessee and Mtasionurj Ridge approach ne .rei

not exceed one-tounh of a mile. Across this val
ley now almost sn i pen plain, varying from u
tod-th of a mile t .vu miles re width, the 1-ede
rals advanced to assault, their ranks exposed
to an artillery fire from the Ridge while in the
plain and tc the infantry fire when theiatiempi

The only objection that can be urged agams.
our line was its length and weakness, the lattei
being the resuit ctihe f- rrner, and the former th;

being mcessi.i v fur us to guard the panes m the

The western side next to the enemy was steep and

pickets occupied the b.-eitstworks below, while

the crest of the BiCge from Mcharian s Gap

natural strength of the position, we had thrown

C 'The Federal army was marshalled under Grant, j
Thomas, and Hooker, and did not number less
than 86,000 veteran troops. The Coniedeiaie
army, under Bragg, Hardee, aud Breckinridge,
did not number bait s > many. Longstreet’s V ir
ginia divisions and other troops had been ten; to
hast Tennessee. Had these been present, with
their steady leader st the head of them, we should
have won a victorv quite as complete as our defeat
has been. As it 'was, we ought to have won the
day and should have have done so, if our men
baa done as well us usual. Poesioly a mistake
was committed when Longstreet was sent aw ay,
and possibly it wouid h: ve been better not to have
accepted battle to-day, but have retired last night.
Gen. Bragg thought, however, that there was not
time after the loss of Looked', to get his army
safely over th»-Caitamauga fast nigbt, and mat
n would oe better, occupying so strong a position,
to fight it oto. But what could be expected from

G- nt depl-yea his immense masses in two
heavy lines ut'battie, aud sometimes in three,
supported by large reserve forces. The spec-k
lacle was m-gmicent as viewed from the crest of
Missionary Ridge. He advanced first against our
right wing, about 10 o’clcez, where he encoun
tered ibftt superb soldier, Lieut. General Hardee,
who commanded on the right, whilst Major Gen
eral 8.-ecklnridge commanded on the left,
Hardee’s command embraced Cleburne’s, Waik„
er's (commanded by Gen. Gist, General Walker
being absent), Cheatham’s and Stevenson’s di
vision-. Bftctinridge’s embraced his old divi
sion, commanded by Brig. Gen. Lewis, Stewart's,
part of Buckner’s, and Hindman’s commanded
by Patton Anderson. The enemy’s first assault
upon Hardee was repulsed with great slaughter,
as was his Second, though made with double
lines supported.wits heavy reserves.
The wave of battle, like the wave of the s-.a
when ii dashes against a rock bound coast beat,
and hissed, and struggled m vain ; for the brave
men who guarded our right were resolved never
to yield one foot to the hated invaders. The odds
against which they contended were fearful; for
wtute the enemy advanced id two syid even three
maas.ve lines, the r own army cons sted of only
one long and weak hne, without supports. Yet
they n>t only repulsed every attack, but caps
iur-d seven digs, sbeut 300 prisoners, aud rt-.
main- d masters of the ground until night, when
tbev were ordered to retire, carrying off all their
guns, losing no prisoners, and but a small per
cantage ot killed and wounded. The whole com
mana oenaved web, and especially that model
soldier, Msj. Gen. Cleburne, a true son of the
Emerald Isle, and his heroic division. Gen. Har
dee. saved the aimy from a disastrous rout, and
added fresh Jaureis to bis brow.
Tee attack on the left wing was not made until
about noon. Here, os on the right, the enemy
wsa repulsed; but he wes obstinate, andfoughi
with great ardor and confidence, returning to the
cbe.we again and again io the handsomest Style,
untu o*.e of our brigades near the centre, said to
be R;ynoius’, gave x-y and the Federal flag wa
planted on Missionary R'dgO. The enediy wusnoi
slow ia of the great «4y»ntagei
or his uew pooiuNn. :Ia a few minutes he turned
upon our flank aud poured into them a terrible
enfilading lire, which soon threw the Confeae«
rates on Its right and left into cmjfusiou. Under
this c infusion, tne gap in our lines grew wider
jand wider, and the wider it grew the faster the
multitudinous foe rushed into the yawning chasm.
The confusion extended until it finally assumed
the form of panic.
Seeing the enemy in posaeEsiou of a portion of
the iieignte the men hastily concluded that ihc
day wu.* gone, arid that they had beat eave them
selves. Just at this tme the alarm was increased
l>j an artillery battery which rushed down the
tell io the river for a fresh supply of ammunition;
the men however, anpp.osed they were flying from
the field, and ihatA ’ was lost. Nearly the whole
left wing eventually i.-ecame involved aud gave
way—a pcrtion ot it retiring under orders, but
the greater oar- ia an nnmittigated rout.
General Bragg did ail he could lo rally tbi
fugitives aud relortn the brokon line. He exposed
himself inihemo-t unguarded manner, and at
one time it look- .« t b» would certainly be
killed. His staff officers were also conspicuous
in their effirts io restore our line. They and the •
chief were the last to leave the ridge.
The day was lost. Hardee still maintained hie
ground: but no success of the right wing could
restore the lelt to its original position. All men
e<5U the traveet —are subject to error and con--
fusion' but to«day some of the C nfedtrates dia
not tight Wi.’h their accustomed courage. Possibly
the contrast betweon the heavy masses of the
Federate as they ro.led across the valley and up
the meunta n ridge, and tuf»r own long and at
tenuated line, was not of 4 cbarar'ter to encour
age them.
Our casualties are small—very small—too
small, indeed, to be recorded along with so com
plete and huanliatiiig a deleat. Included among
our losses are some i f our best guns—perhaps at
many as tnirty or forty The infantry supports
in some instances fled so precipitately that there
was no time left to remerc the guns. There were
but tew roads down the mountain by which they
could retreat, aud ihte occasioned further loss.
AH the artillery behav-id woll. The men in Cobb’s
uattery stood -oeir ground after their supports
bad fl-.d, and though they lost their guns, they
fought them to the and when they could use
them no logger on account O.’ ihe ateepnass of tbs
descent, they hurled L-qod granadee • l the foe as
he crawled upon the mountain beneath »he muz'
zlmj of the guns.
The enemy’s loss must have exceeded oars ter:
to one. Uur dead and some ot the wounded left
on the fleid.
Bat it is late and bitter cold, and I must close.
