My Violet.
It grew by unfrequented paihs,
Along untrodden ways;
If glistened in the golden light
Os balmy summer days.
It blossomed in the summer time,

But when the snow lay on the ground
Tbe violet was dead.
Bbc lived in * sequester'd place.
She trod untrodden ways;
She grew the eupJight of my life
In those 014 summer days.

AMD BRAIN.
I.
Bright shoße the lists, blue bent the skies,
And the knights still hurried amain
To the tournament under the ladies’ eyes,
Where the Joustcrs were Heart and Brain.
H,
Flourished the trumpets: entered Heart,
A youth iu crimson and g >ld.
Flourished again: Brain stood apart,
Steel-armored, dark and cold.
f * HI.
Heart’s palfry caracoled gayly round, % e
Heart tra-li-ra’d merrily;
But Brain sat still, with never a sound,
So cynical-calm was he. "
IV.
Heart’s helmet-crest bore favors three
From his ladye’s white hand caught;
While Brain wore casque; not me
Or favor gave or sought.
v.
The herald blew: Heart shot a glance
To find his ladye’s eye,
But Brain gazed straight ahead his lance
To aim more fa’thfully.
VI.
They charged, they struck; both fell, both bled.
Brain rose again, ungloved.
Heart, dying, smiled and faintly said,
“My rove to my beloved!”

A Masonic Appeal.
BY DAVID CAVAN.
[lf any Mason can read these lines without feeling
a renewed incitement to duty, he must have mistaken
bis vocation:]
Poor and old, infirm, but honest,
Where, where must our brother go ?
Not a relative remaineth
To alleviate his woe.
Will ye say it l—dare ye say it f
“ To the poor-house let him go /”
Weak and frail, the aged widow
Lacketh means and iacketh home;
• * Neither son nor daughter livetb,
In the world she stands alone.
Where will she go I— dare ye say it t
“ Let the alms-house be her home f” *
Young and helpless, see the orphan
Os a brother, loved, hut dead;
None to counsel him survlvetb, •
None to fumhtii him with bread t
Must he steal, or starve and perish ?
God forbid that e\ r be said 1
Men and brethren, do your duty,
Give old age a peaceful home,
Teach and feed and clothe the orphan—
He’s your charge, and yours alone;
Vows forget not, and your conscience
And your God will say “ well done !”
An Essay os th» Red Man.— An Idaho poet has
been exasperated, by Indian depredations, into the
perpetration of the following:
Lo; the poor Indian 1 whose unscrup’lous mind
Steals our best ox, nor leaves a horse behind;
Oh, no I his soul was never taught to stray
Into our corral at close or break of day.
Upon that cloud-topped hill all day he lies—
At night he steals wnat in the day he spies;
Then hurries off his tillieunts to meet,
Bating as they kill, killing as they eat;
They then once more their lovely squaws behold,
Enjoy connubial bliss, nor thirst for gold.
To steal’s not half their natural desire ;
’Tis their delight to set a house on lire,
And shoot the inmates who attempt to flee—
Old Belzebub bears them company.
Fatal Acgibent.—lt is with great regret
that we chronicle the fact that Mr. Jacob Shaver,
for many years a resident of this District, lost
his life by a melancholy accident on last Friday
afternoon. He was on a visit to his son-in-law
and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Greenfield,
who had fast removed from the vicinity of
Alston into Newberry District. At the time of
the accident Mr. Shaver was watching the opera
tions of a large circular saw connected with a
mill on the premises. Accidentally observing
a plank which he thought to be in the way, he
attempted to remove it, when one end was
caught in the machinery, and he was jerked
upon the saw, which was revolving with great
velocity. Yhree terrible wounds were inflicted
on him, one of them severing a femoral artery,
from the effect of which he died in a few
minutes.— Greenville (S. C.) Mountaineer.
A North Carolina Loyalist Cornered.--
A Mr. Tourgee, one of the loyal lights in North
Carolina, some time since addressed the people
of Lincolnton. In the course of his remarks
he stated that since he had been in the town of
Lincolnton threatening letters had been placed
under his door. The Town Council called on
Mr. Tourgee for the letters, in order that they
might identify the handwriting and punish the
author, but the gentleman'eould not produce
them. Os course no such letters were ever
written, thus developing another phase in the
unmistakable loyalty of North Carolina

I KT A YOUNG LADY RETURNING TO HER
country home, after a sojourn of a few months in the
City, was hardly recognized by her friends. In place of a
coarse, rustic, flushed face, she had a soft ruby complexion
of almost marble smoothness, and instead of twenty-three
she really appeared but eighteen. Upon inquiry as to
the cause of so great a change, she plainly told th£m that
she used the CIRCASSIAN BALM, and considered it an
invalu ble acquisition to any Lady’s toilet. By its use
any Lady or Gentleman can improve their personal ap
pearance an hundred fold. It is simple in its combina
tion, as Nature herself is simple, yet unsurpassed in its
efficacy in drawing impurities from, also healing, cleans
ing and beautifying the skin and complexion. By its
direct action on the cuticle it draws from it all its impu
rities, kindly healing the same, and leaving the surface
as Nature intended it should be, clear, sott, smooth and
beautiful. Price SI, sent by Mail or Express, on receipt

THE CHINGARORA
ANTI NERVOUS
SMOKING TOBACCO !
r J?HE CHINGARORA TOBACCO glows from
the rich soil of the “ORIENT,” and is possessed of
a peculiar delicious flavor entirely unknown to the
tobaccos of ail other climes. Eut its unprecedented
popularity has sprung from the fact of the entire ab
sence of that deadly poison Nicotin, which permeates
everV other tobacco, and which is the one and sole
cause of the distressing nervous diseases, dyspeps a,
Sec.., which most invariably, sooner or later, follow
the indulgence of the pipe and cigar. At the recent
analyzation of tobacco* from all parts of the world,
at the Academy of Sciences, in Paris, the renowned
Chemist, M. Lamaureaux, declared that while Euro
pean and American tobacco contained fully eight per
cent, and the purest Havana tobacco from two to live
per cent.of Nicotin, the CHINGARORA did not con
tain one discoverable particle of that deadly ooison, a
drop of which, extracted, will destroy life.
Our agent at Bombay has shipped us large quanti
ties of the CHINGARORA during the past two
years, and although we have been pressed to supply
the demand for this delicious luxury to the veteran
smoker, yet we are now prepared to offer it in un
limited quantities, at a price much lower than some
American tobacco of a tar inferior quality.
A oemnoiseur has but to smoke the American to
bacco and cigars, which are invariably chemicaily
flavored, to be disgusted with the medicinal taste
which leaves a nauseous, unhealthy coating in the
mouth, and in time seldom fails to shatter the nervous
system.
The natives of the “ ORIENT ” smoke the CHIN
GARORA from murn till night, from vouth to age,
and are happily unconscious of the wild, distressing
fire which courses through the veins of the inhaler of
the fumes of tobacco containing Nicotin.
We invite everv lover of the weed to try the CHIN
GARORA, and guarantee unprecedented pleasure in
its delicious flavor. Sold everywhere.

GRAND CHARITABLE
PRESENTATION
CONCERT!
IN AID OF THE
Southern Orphan’s Associations
Incorporated by the Legislature of Virginia,
- January 2d, 1867.
TO BE GIVES IS BALTIMORE,
June 17* 1867.
THE PROFITS OF THIS CONCERT WILL BE
GIVEN TO THE SOUTHERN ORFHANS’.
ASSOCIATION.
The officers of the Southern Orrbans’AJsocia
tion for the maintenance and education of the desti
tute orphans of deceased Southern soldiers and sailors,
earnestly solicit the sympathy and co-operation in our
oESd ftSentition Concert, of all who desire to see
the‘Heme and School’ enabled to receive and care
for all needy ones who seek its shelter and protection.
It is the design of this Association to erect a
“Home and School” for the orphans of the South,
both male and female, on an extensive scale, in
the city of Richmond, Va. As an inducement to
have the building located there tbe Common Council
of that city have guaranteed ten acres ot land, m an
elevated and healthful location, and will increase the
quantity of land if needed.
It is with a confident hope m a favorable response
to this appeal to a public which has never yet failed to
sustain a charitable institution, that we have entered
into an arrangement to organize a Grand Mutual Pre
sentation Concert for its benefit, and earnestly solicit
the kindly aid and patronage of the public, to ensure
its succers. .. . ,
It may seem unnecessary to add a single wqr 4 to
tee above, but the calls upon the Inet tution have
been so numerous and pressing and the struggle
through which it is now passing Jo widen the circle of
its charities, is of such an rduous nature that the man
agement cannot too strongly urge upon the humane
and sympathetic everywhere, an active participation
in this additional attempt to alleviate tlie sad condition
of great numbers of he pless children, Tendered thus
by the terrible war through which we have passed.—
And assuredly, whatever may have been the relative
political views of ladies <md gentlemen heretofore,
all must agree tliat the children referred to cornu not,
by any possibility, have had any agency in bringing
about their present deplorable and destitute condition,
arid are suitable objects for the charity of all persons
of whatever shade of political opinion. The “ Home
and School ” which they now, more particularly seek
to establish and endow, will be of incalcuia le benefit
by providing not only lood and raiment, but iikeviise
solid and thorough education lor these helpless ones,
thus qualifying them for future usefulness to society at
large. In order that this appeal may be effectual in en
listing the active interest and co-operation of all clas
ses of persons everywhere, we have concluded to
issue for the
