OVBK TUB BLI'FF. Wonderful Gyrations of an Obstrep erous Horse and PLunge imo the Hirer. While the little steamer Kota was taking cu her cargo for SawnnaJh at our wharf Fri'ru\ afternoon, a aegto boy brought j down a horse which he had been instructed ; to ship to some point down the river. As j the turn came for the animal to "walk the 1 plank” he was confidently led forward by the who is in the habit of dis patchiug business accordinafto the rules of all well regulated steamboats, and when the ii' >rse began to show a decided aversion to being checked off along with other freight. u was decided to count him in, and be over with it. The Returning Board was ap-1 piied while he was on the plank, and not hearing from the other two horses which had just preceded him, he was in doubt what so do, and while turuing and twisting around fell into the river, but the man held Ott so the hulter and after floundering about awhile landed him safely on the wharf. This process was repeated two or three times, when it was decided to use a stout cope and gently force him aboard. The horse was taken to the bluff, where the rope was arranged around his neck, head and shoulders, and finally passed between his fore legs and around his bodv. a hi martingale, and the negro given the end of the rope and told to puil. while brisk per suasion was brought to bear in his mar. This worked finely until the edge of the cliff was reached, when, making a desjter ate lurch, he bounded over the cliff and plunged into the river, carrying with hnu the negro in his flight. The darkey’s yells, as he sailed through the air and struck the water, were savage-like, and as he rose * from the turbid stre am his eyes looked like a pair of Savannah oyster she T’s. Mr. Dunbar, the agent, immediately threw him a rope, and by this means tiie negro was hauled iu. The horse swum some distance down the stream before he landed, and was afterwards caught. anel tamely went aboard. The performances were witnessed by a large number of people who lined the bunks.; Hampton Recognized. The Supreme Court of South Carolina has recognized Wade Hampton as the only lawful Governor of that State. Judges Willard and Wright signed the order re leasing Tilda Norris, a convict pardoned by Hampton and which was made a test case. Afterwards Wright, the negro Judge, "re niggeu” on his decision and signed a coun ter statement and fled the State. But it came too late. The original order was filed and the penitentiary keeper released Tilda. All tax? Circuit Judges in the State have for mally recognized Hampton but two, and they are asking for their buck pay from the Hampton treasury. The Augusta and K uoxville Railroad Must be Built. Owicb ok J. F. AL. J. Miller. i Acuusta, Ga., March :!d, IST7. i Msssrs. Editors—We crave space in your columns to urge the importance of starting the Augusta and Knoxville Kail road at once. The discrimination against Augusta, in the matter of freights, is .severe ly felt by our business houses, and unless some determined effort is made that will bring Western produce to our city as cheap ly as it freighted to Atlanta and other com peting ports, the business of Augusta w ill soon dwindle into insignificance.; Our correspondent at Bowling Green writes us as follows: “Green lint-freights South were advanced to-day from all “ stations on Louisville and Nashville Ra.il “ road, and this makes it impossible for me “to sell corn at delivered. Where the old rates to Augusta ran from 44 to 4Sc., the new ones are from 30 to obc., a differ eneeof 10c. per 100 pounds. The rate* ti Atlanta were raised only le. (>cr 100 pounds, and to no other point was advance more or as much as so Augusta. As only a newjird more direct avenue, such as the Augusta and Knoxville Railroad will open to the West, and secure to our city the advantage of cheaper freights, it behooves us to com mence the w >rk of building the road imme diately. If, Messrs. Editors, we go to work in the rigid way, the road can and will be built, and we'trust that appreciating its advantage you will endeavor to stimulate our people to move in the matter. Very respectfully yours, J. F. «fe L. J. Miller. The River. The Savannah river registered by ‘.lie vt ater mark, at the city bridge, at 6 o’clock yesterday afternoon, 22 feet 2 inches, w hich is a rise of 5 feet 2 inches since ou r report on Friday afternoon.
