Friday, P. M. Feb. 24,1871.
By speeisl telegrams received by us to
night from the Smibern ports, we are in
possession of returns Bhowing the receipts,
exports, dc., of cotton for the work end
ing this evening, February 24. From the
figures thus obtained it appears that tne
toL-l receipts for the seven days have
rt ached 136,6 1 bai ts, against 14',9>7 bales
last week, 16!,'»90 bales the previous week,
and 154,482 bams three weeks since, mak
ing the tottl receipts since the first of
S-pteinber, 1870, 2.787.750 b-les, against
2,115,539 bates for the same period of 1869-
76, snowing an increase since September
1 ibis year 0f672,241 bales.
The exports for the week endinj this
evening reach a total of 125,248 bales, ot
which 94,617 were to Great Britain, ami
30,631 to the Continent, while ihe stocks
at all the ports, as made up this evening,
are now 693,218 bales.
From the foregoing statement it will be
seen that compared with the correspond
ing w«ek of last season, there is an in
crease In the exports this week of 63,8 4
bales, while the stocks to-night are 124,984
b: les more than they were at this time
For forward delivery the sales (includ
ing 1,150 free on board,) have reached
duripg the week 58,550 bales (all lew mid
dling or on the basis of low middling.)
Our Exports..— I The extent of our crop
this year is still, of course, somewhat un
certain, but the general estimate places it
now rather over than under 4,000,000
bales. Taking that figure then as the
basis and allowing an increase in stork in
the United S‘ates of say 100,600 bales, we
t-hail still ,have left for txport (provided
our own spinners consume the same
amount as lost year) 756,000 bales more
than during last seasor. Up to this time
(ihelatrst mail dates February 17), we
hare exported 481,330 bales more than for
the tame reried ot 1869 70, leaving, if the
BANNER OF THE SOUTH AND PLANTERS’ JOURNAL.
crop foots up as above estimated, about
270,000 bales for the balance ot the season,
in addition to last seasons exports for th
same period, to makeup thesurplus which
we shall have to spare over and above ’R>t
year Great Britain haa had slreadv 573,-
000 bales more than last year, and hence
it the news es peace received to-day turns
out to be correct, for the b -Unce of the
year she would not be entitled to anv fur
ther increased supply. It is not unlikely,
however, that the movement to the con
tinent from Liverpool will be larger than
last season, or in other word*, the con
tinentsl supply will more of it go through
Liverpool. In that ca«e, of course, the
direct movement from hero to Great
Britain would also be larger ; otherwise
our year’s exports would divide tliom
s-lves up about as follows-giving Great
Britain in a l, sav 2,000,000 bales, and other
ports 950,000 bales. Our shipments (ac
cording to latest mail dst> s) have already
been to Great Britain 1,302,000 bales, and
to the continent 292,000 bales ; the re
maining shipments would therefore in this
case be about 700,000 bules to Great
Britain, and 650,000 bales to the continent.
India.—According to our latest mad ad
vices (January 2lt-t, received litis week
from Bombay) the first indications may
be noticed of the eil-ct of low prices on
the movement of the crop. 1 his is par
ticularly showing it“elf among the
ryots in their unwillingness to send
forward their cotton. Messrs. Nie 1
A Cos. write “that supplies of new
cotton are still coming forward to
this market on the kinalltwt scale, ami the
question of how long prices are to remain
re’atively as much above hotnequolaiions
depeuds entirely upon the monetary
strength the ryots are possessed of. That
it is groat is evident from the reluctant
manner in which the trilling arrivals in
Ilia up-country maikets are par ed with,
while picking is progressing ranidly.” S’
also we see Messrs. Finlay, Muir it Cos.
state “that new cotton eomea on the green
slowly.” If this disposition to sell con
tinues, we must expeot to find the move
ment to Europe slower and perhaps
smaller than lsst year, though in sli prob
ability an increased crop will have been
raised. Up to February 10, tire cable re
ports state that Ihe exports from Bombay
had beet’, since January 1, to Great Bri
tain 59 o>,o bales and to the 0 ntinent 12,-
000 bale- 1 , against 41.250 to Great Britain
and 8 800 bales to the Continent during
the same period of 1870. The total exports
from Bombay for 1870 and the four pre
vious years were as follows :
