An Illiterate Clerk.
Few of our Tenders have any idea of
the old country churches isl England,
where they often have a civile, who, in
m usual twang, reads the responses, and
gives out the hyros nrnl psalms This
old felhnv generally has 11 fixed seat in
the village alehouse; wliere he is an all
tbority of matters, parochial or eccle.i
astical.
When, by death or otherwise, the of
fice becomes vacant, anew elerk must
l<e elected; nnd the following aneedote
will illustrate the great pains . occasion*
ully taken in the choice.
A countiy church in Somersetshire
was in want of a clerk; and as the sal.
nry, with perquisites, was only six
j'ounds per annum and a suit of clothes,
there was some slight diffi u’ty in find
ing- candidates for it. At last an old
fellow, who had been for a long.time
living l>y his wits, applied for tlie i lerk
ship, quite forgetful of the fact that lie
could neither read nor write. Thom*
who had the appointing of him did not
think of asking any questions, and he
was engaged.
- ‘Who was to read the service ?’ the
new derk inquired of himself. Sunday
was approaching, and what was be to
do? lie was for a time ill great tribu
tion.
At length he bethought him of a
friend, who could read, and who would
no doubt be able and willing to prompt
him.
. He sought the friend, and secured his
assistance,. 1,1 ranging for the latter to
b&wf a seat near at hand, among the
choristers.
On Sunday the new clerk commence'!
his duties, and got on well ermugh lilt
he came to the ‘Te Dciiin,’ when by ill
lack he placed his thumb right over the
sentence necessio-y to be read.
‘Take time thumb uwu’!' whispered
his frioml.
‘Take thee thumb aw a' 1’ repeated
the new clerk, iu a clear, sonnriou*
Voice.
“Thee fool, then’s spoiled it all,’ mut
tered ttie dismayed prompter.
* The fool, thee's spoilt it all,’ sang
out tlie unfortunate clerk.
A sudden raid of church wardens en
ded in the poor impostor being drugged
away from the desk, and hustle I out of
the church—no doubt regretting that in
bis early days he had not paid m >re at
tention to his spelling-book.
The Peace nr Europe— At n recent
agricultural meeting Lord Clarendon
spoke an follows ;

not the gift of prophecy—though I do
not pret-nd to eeo further into futurity
than other men—yet I cannot help on
thin occasion expressing my belief that
ai no time since the war between l’nis

prospect of maintaining the inostpimlile
blessings of peace. [ljoud and coutin
tied cheering, amidst which the noble
lord resumed his seat.]

that it redounds infinitely more to the

Patented April 14th, 1868.

Its excellency consists in its simplicity, strength, portability,
compactness, and convenience.
It can be hauled on a two-horse wagon.
Three hands can put it up and take it down in an hour.
It will pack from 500 to 600 pounds in a bale, with ease.
One hand, without help, has often packed a bale weighing 500
pounds. * „ * T \ "
This model Press, having been in use for the past two seasons,
and having given entire satisfaction, we can, therefore confidently
recommend it to Planters, as being ONE of the BEST, if not the
very best, Presses in use.
Notice the following certificates (among many others we have
and could procure) from parties who have used this press :
