In the recently j>uibitisl»ed ‘Life of Au
dubon,’ is mii account of an rrrterviow
with Daniel Boone, the Kentucky Pio
neer, at Frankfort in that State.
• W hiie at the town ot Fraukfo t
the year 1812,) Audubon had an ..jipor
luntty -of weeing the celebrated Daniel
Donne ‘braking eguirnda, 1 or, du a less
technical tfhraee, driving them out of
their places by 'fil ing into the bark of
the tree immediately beaide the position
they crouch iuto, Audubon went <-ut
with Boone to Bee the sport and writes :
‘We walked out together, and follow
ed the rocky margins of the Kentucky
rmr until we reached a piece of flat
land thickly covered with walnuts, Oakl
and hickories. As the mast was a good
one that year, the squirrels w ere s. on
gamboling on every tree around us. Aly
coinpauron t a stout, hale, athletic man
dressed in a homespun hunting shirt,
barelegged and moccasined, cauied a
long and heavy rifle, which, as ht* was
loading it, he said bad proved t ffic.eiit
in all this undertakings, and which he
hoped would not full on this occasion,
as he telt proud to show me his skill.—
The gun was wiped, the powder meas
ured, the ball patched with six hundred
thread, and the charge sent homo with u
hickory rod.
‘We moved not a step from the place,
for tbe equirreh* were so numerous that
it was unnecessary to go after them.—
Boone pointed to one of these animals
which had observed us, and was crouch
ed on a branch about fifty paces distant,
nod bade Hie mark well the spot where
the ball should hit. lie raised his piece
gradually until the bead (that being
the name given by the Kentuckians to
the sight) of the ba, rel was brought to
a line with the spot which he intended
to hit, and fired.
‘I was astonished to find that the ball
had hit the piece of bark immediately
beneath the squirrel and shivered it to
splinters, the concussion produced by
which had killed the uniniul, and sent it
whirling through the air, us if it had
been blown up.
‘The snuffing «rs a candle with a ball I
bad an opportunity of seeing near the
banks of Green river, not far from a
large pigeon roost, to w hich I hud pre
viously made a visit. I beard many re
ports of guns during the early part of a
dark night, and knowing them to be
those of rifles, I went toward the t pot
to ascertain the cause. On reaching
the place I was welcomed by a dozen ot
stout men, who told me they were oxer
eising for the purpose of enabling them
to shoot Under night at the reflected
light from the eye of a deer or a wolt
by Torchlight
‘At a distance of fifty paces stood a
lighted candle, budiy distinguished m
the darkness. One m..n was placed
within a few yards of it, to watch the
effects of the shot, as well as to light
the caudle, should it chance to go out,
or repair it should the shot cut it m-ross
‘Each marksman shot iu his turn
Some never hit either the snuff or the
candle. One of them, who was parties
uiarly expert, was very fortunate, and
snuffed the candle three times out of
seven, whilst aIL the other shots either
put out the cundle or cut it immediate
ly under the light.’
The WoNdrkb of (jAUFonNiA.—Sam

tic Monthly, the novelties of uuture in
California :
With suddenly developed yet secure
ly held wealth as these few tacts illus
trate, the future of California looms be
fore the visitor with proportions that
astound and awe. Her nature is as
boundless in its fecundity and variety,
ns it is strange and startling in its forms.
While Switzerland has only four moun
tains that reach as high as 13,000 feet,
California has a hundred or two, and
or.e, M/*unt Whitney, that soars to 15,-
000 feet, and is the highest peak of the
Republic. She lias a waterfall fi teen
times as high as Niagioa. All cli
mates are her own; any variety which
her long stretch north and south does
not present, her mountains and valleys
introduce. Dead volcanoes and sun
ken rivers in her mountains;
the largest animal of the continent
makes bis covert in her chappural; the
second largest bird of the world floats
over her plains for carrion; the oldest
man has been dug out of her depths;
the biggest nugget of gold J weighing
292 pounds and worth $37,400) has
been found among her gold deposits;
she has lakes so thin that a sheet of pa
per will sink in the r waters, so voru
cious that they will eat up a man, boots,
breeches and all, in thirty days, so en
<Jbwei\ in their fiYUfttavns I'-val they will
supply the world’s apothecaries with bo
rax, sulphur, and soda; site has mud
volcanoes and the Yoseniite valley ; she
grows beets of 120 pounds, cabbages
of 75, onioas of 4, turnips of 26, water
melons of 80, an I has a grape vine 15
inches thick, and' bearing 6400 lbs. in
one season. Her men are the most en
terprising and audacious; her women
the most self-reliant and the most richly

sturdiest and sauciest of any in the

SCREW PRESS!
- VK*
Patented April 14th, 18®8.
Its excellency consists m its simplicity, strength, portability,
compactness, and convenience.
It can be hauled on a Uvo-horse wagon.
Three hands can put it up and take it down in an hour.
It will pack from .500 to 600 pounds in a bale, with ease.
One hand, without help, has often packed a bale weighing 500
pounds.
This model Press, having been in use for the past two seasons,
and having given entire satisfaction, we can, therefore confidently
recommend it to Planters, as being ONE of the BEST, if not the
very best, Presses in use.
Notice the following certificates (among many others we have
and could procure) from parties who have used this press :
Messrs. Tommky & Stewart—
Gentlemen—l have used your Revolving Cotton Press for two successive seasons
and fei l authorized to say that it is built in conformity with the laws of Mechan

agettient, as well as for the uniformity and neatness of the Bales which it packs, I
tiiiuk it deserves to be classed iu the first rank of Cotton Screws now known to
the public, and I wou and reluctantly exchange it f>r any other form with which I
am acquainted. Very truly and respectfully, Yours, &e., A. MEANS.

During lasi season I packed with Brooks’ Improved Portable Cotton Screw

entitled to preference over auy Screw I have seen in use.

A CARD TO THE AFFLICTED, J
t)t. 4ML -L. JLICHTENSTADT, a resident of Georgia for 21 years, begs leave to
tender bis-aervivea to tbe-citizens of Randolph and adjoining eounties, for the treatment of jtll
Chror ic Diseases, but especially these of a Nervous character, such as Neuralgia Os tike
Face and Head, as we b as.Sciatica, or pains in the Hip, Joints, Thighs, Knees and Ancles.
This method of treating disease in its various forms, by external applications, was introduced
by me in this St ite, in 1865. upon my return from Eutope, and is, comparatively speaking, a
new one, hot has been alreajy sufficiently tested in various parts of this State, to secure for it
hosts of friends, especially amongst the many patients whose sufferings have been promptly and
PERMANENTLY cured by means of tbe Biometer.”
I have speedily restored those who suffer- and from the blighting disease of Paralysis, and have
had the gratification to seethe return of health in the victims of Epileptic convulsions, whose
cases have been repeatedly pronounced incurable, by competent au’fioriti.a.
Gout and Rheumatism yield> to this treatment witti wonderful promptness, and not less re
markable in the fact that all .kin diseases, by whatever technical name they may be designated,
have to succumb to my system of external medicatiog.
My Certificates, which, amongst ot ers, bear the names of eminent citizens of this State and
Alabama, will be distributed by mail, or can be had upon application to me. A patient perusal
of the same is solicited.
AQS“ Until further notice I can be found at the Hotel in Cuthbert, on every
Wednesday and -Thursday, of each week, and hope to secure the ap
probation of those who may need my services.
Liberty Hall, Crawforesvju.e, Ga.. Sept. 14tb, 1869.
I think it proper to state to ail who have no experience in the Needle Treatment, as practiced
by Dr M L.-Liehtenstadt, and who desire information upon the subject, that I have tried it
and think well of it. It. has, within my knowledge, in some cases, effected almost marvelous results. It
was.the first thing that gave me relief from the most agonizing pains, after intense suffering for
two days from a serious injury in the hip. From this hurt I am not yet restored—t<m still una
ble to walk— tbe injury was received more than eight month* ago. I have during that time,
reeoited to many r.-medics—none have beam effectual, and none tl-at T have tried seem to have
been tuoie benefleinl than the use ot the Biomet w. It gave me the first relief from intense nain.
•and under its continued occasional application, the general tone of the nervous syste «, which
was so shocked by the hurt, lies been greatly improved. This is mv opinion of the effects of
this treatment on myself. In other cases within m knowledge, its effects have been as 1 have
stated, almost m irvelous. 1 he°e ernes were Om-onic Rheu'imt ism
Dr. Liebtenstadt I have found to lie a man of education, of uibmity and amenity of manners
and in all respects deserving the consideration due to a gentleman
ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS.
Sparta, Ga., June 21st, 1869.
_I certify, that under the treatment of Dr. M. L. I.icmfnstadt, my wife has been very greatly
benefitted. For years she lias been a frequegy-cr. J g-eat sufferer from Nervous Headaches but
sine) hi* second visit, now more than two months ago. she has not had an attack of this pnmfal
and prostrating disease, and her-general health lias greatly improved.
I do unhesitatingly aud earnestly recommend h a pruetice to all sufferers from Nervous af
fections. OH ARLES W. Dtußi.SK.
Warbkntok, Ga., September 3, 18<i9.
Dr. M. L. LichtenßTadt —Bear Sir: Ic* nsttier it a sacred duty to reader yoy
my sincere acknowledgement* for the mu vi li-us cure you have eff cted in m*
Niece’s case who has been afflicted with EPILEPTIC FITS, in its worst form
for about twenty years, and will only mention that my object in rendering von this
elaborate statement is to call the attention of all sufferers, who are similarly af
flicted., to your method of treatment, and to beg them to lay aside their prejudices,
to try your skill, and be cored like my niece has been.
A brief outline of this distressing ease will suffice : My niece, Miss Sarah
Gross, has lived with me from her infancy, and when about 14 years old, she was
quite suddenly attacked with spasmodic affections, which constantly and gradu
ally grew worse in epite of tiie best medical attention, until the spasms turned in
to Epileptic Convulsions, returning upon the poor victim at Shorter rotcrvulu,
making her a wreck i 1 body, and seriously affecting her mind. The family, du
ring all these long years, Inis spared neither money nor pains to have a cure ef
fected. And when the skill of our local physicians had been exhausted, we con
cluded to try the science of professional men of Augusta, Ga., but all proved ut
ter failures, and iff the fifteen physicians, under whose treatment she has been for
the last tweffly years, not one was able to chock the ravages of this dreadful
■disease. *
When you came to our village, and promised us a cure, I confess that my con
fidence in its snccess was very small indeed, but 1 am now thankful to an Allwise
Providence for the happy doliveranee, and am anxious that others who are simi
larly afflicted in their families, should be made acquainted with all the facts, aud
at least give you a trial. If they do, lam sure they will bless lire day, and thank
me for this statement.-
It may appear s'rufige to every one, to learn that, although my niece has had
from three to eight Epileptic Convulsions a week, for a period of nearly twenty
years, accompanied by excruciating headaches, that your remedy should be Able
to cause a visible improvement from the start, but such is nevertheless the case,
and can be substantiated by all the neighbors in our settlement You began your
treatment early in February, and improvement was evident after the second treat
ment. Her fits were getting milder and milder, and nice the 13ih day of last
March, she has not had any tits nor symptoms. Her mind is now as good as ever
it was before her first attack, and she is not only able to take care of herself,
which 6he could not do before, but she is competent to perform a great many do
mestic duties, and undergoes a good many fatigues.
I hope and liust Doctor, that you may continue in your successes, relieving the
afflicted, and reiwttin, gratefully, your friend, Mks. SARAII E. HiLL.
SrARTA. Ga.. June 15th, 1869.
Du. Lichtexstadt— Dear Sir: In appreciation of your new method of treating disease, I
cheerfully bear testimony to its great efficacy ia relieving Buffeting wherever properly applied
and persistently continued.
My wife has lor some 3'e,irs complained of unpleasant sensation, and h«3 often felt sudden
pains about the heart, 'this was not continuous, but occurred at any time, eve . when she wa»
seemingly well Early in January last, she began to expeiictice much excited action of the
heart, and the whole artel-inf sxstein, accompanied with great, nervous excitement, which daily
increase), distressing and weakening h-r v.vymuch, until ahoit’the middle of February, when
she had hceome completely prosti-al• and, both in body and mind. I called in a family f'lijsician,
a man of skill aid nuenve, but she ronllMlted to gu.w wore >. until i began U) -ttss-patr, and-uon
sidered her case almost, hopeless. Hearing of yo-r treatment. { prevailed upon her to have yon
called in. She consented with gieat reiv.cmnee, aid on! to gratify me, but the result has been
rematkable. Your first visit was in April lirth. when she was so feebtc that she had to tost
three times during a very slight application of your remedy. I ■ ould sue that she improved
after every application, and after the fourth treatment her c<mvaleseei ce became evident to all.
for she began to walk without as-istanee, at and eottld take some nourishment, which increased her
strength rapidly. Khe has now been under your treatment two mouths, mid although she is
not entirely well, and perhaps may never be in perfect health again, yet she is so much ira
proved as to be able to ride and walk about wiib-much comfort to herself, and can ettei and to
many of her domestic duties. Her appetite and diges.ion are good, and her sleep gieatly im
proved.
With many thanks to you for your suoce sful treatment (und-*r a kind Proviucnee) of her case,
and sincere good wishes for your professional success, 1 am, with respects, vours.
