Gate.
[ ,-'y old lilac hashes showed
That there a house bad been ;
they k*p‘ a brave front to tbe road,
And ebut tbe footpath in.
Aml bid and bed by tangled w.-lgkt
(If stems and root?, the fuUut* gat*.
ttith auddiarsense of common right
To ooiuaion homes and ground.
| ki**lt and wrrotled with my might
Until the Memo unwound ;
Tien tenderly. A next of-kin.
1 .wrung the old gatevut uud in.
1 lien down the bill I went my way.
Thinking, with smiles and tears,
H w joy* are of day and day,
But grave* are made of year*:
When midden fell, I know no where,
A s.und, like voice, which filled tbe air.
A aound. which was not voice nor sound,
Although it filled tbe -air ;
"Ami stranger still, no terror bonnd
Me, when I turned, and where
The old gate swung, saw spirit child,
Who shook her golden hair and smiled.
And vanished as she smiled, and gave
Her place to maiden sweet,
Who bore-her features, but more grave,
•With happiness complete.
Aid stood, as Psyche stood, the morn
Her wedded sou l was newly born ;
/Then, swinging noiseless still the gate,
The spell moved on. and set
‘The maiden’s face to mother’s fate,
.With, jyyfiiittears all wet.
"And hankie that stretched to heaven from earth
In blessed travail of child-birth ;
Then, noiseless still, jsnd still- tbe sir
Ail filled with spirit sound.
The lonely mother, old. yet laic,
LooMd patient to the ground,
Liat-ning for feet so slow to bring
A Silver Token from the King ;
■Then came a cloud, a stir of feet,
The shadow of a pa II;
The gold-haired child, the maiden sweet,
'The mother, one in all,
And all in one! * * *
In vain will wait
Tbe bou'e. Tn vain the open gate.
< With reverent step I nearer drew,
But ail stood as before ;
And nothing stirred whll« I passed through,
And tenderly once more,
A< If I had next kinsman s right,
I'left the old gate fastened tight.

Tea and Coffee.
Taking into account thte habits of the
fieopln, tea and coffee for supper and
ireuklast add to human health and Hie,
it a single cup be taken at either meal,
■and is never increased in strength, fre
tjnency or quantity. If they were mere
stimulants, and were taken thus in mod
eration and with uniformity, they would,
in time, become either inert, or the sys
it<m would become so habituated to
their employment as to remain in the
«anre relative, position to them, as if
they had never been used; and conse
quently, as to themselves, they 4hml ’bet
ter never been used, as they are-so ftia-i
hie to abuse. But science and fact
unite in declaring them to be nutritious
as well as stimulant; bonce they wit l ! do
anew good to the system every day, to
the end of life, just ns bread and fruits
do; hence we never get tired of either.
Bui the use of bread uud fruits is daily
abused by multitudes, and dispepsia
and cholera morbus result; yet weought
tint to forego their employment on that
account, nor should we forego the use
ot tea and coffee because their inordi
Tiate use gives neurulgios and othei ail
molds.
liut the habitual use of tea and cos
fee, at the last -aud first meals of the
day, has unother high advantage—is
productive of incalculable good in the
wuy of averting evils.
We will drink at our meals, and if we
do not drink these, we will drink what
is worse—cold water, milk, or alcoholic
mixtures. The regular use of these last
will loud the young to drunkenness; the
considerable employment of simple milk,
at meals, by sedcutary people—by all,
except the robust—will either consti
pate or render bilious; while.cold wa
ter, largely used —that is, to the extent
of a glass or two at a meal, especially
in cold weather —attracts to itself so
tiiiich of the heat of the system, in rais
ing said water to the temperature of
the body (about one hundred degrees)
that the process of digestion is arrested;
in the meanwhile, giving rise to a death
ly sickness oi stomach, to twisting pains*
to vomitings, purgings, aud even to
crumps, to fearful contortions, and sud
den dealii; which things would have
been averted, had even the same amount
of liq iid in the shape of simple hot wa
ter been used. But any one knowing
these things, and prejudiced
against the use of tea aud coftee, would
subject himself to be most unpleasantly
stared at and questioned, if not ridi
-misled, were he to nsk for a cup >»r glass
of hot water. But as tea and coffre are
now universal beverages, are on every
table, and everybody is expected to
take one or the other as a in alter’of
course, they are unwittingly the means
of safety and of life to multitudes
They save life where a glass of cold wa
ter would have destroyed it. ,tjo that
the use of these beverages is not mere
ly allowable, it is politic, it is a necissi
ty.— Hall's Journal of 1 ealth.
A Strong Case—A fat old gentleman
who had been bit in the call of his leg
bv a dog, came to Jonah in a towering
passion, declaring it was Jonah’s dog
who had bitten him. Expecting an ac
tion for damages, the wag drew up the
following articles as the ground for his
defence:
1. By testimony in favor of the gen
eral good conduct of my dog, I can
prove that nothing could make, him so
forgetful of his dignify as to bite a
“calf.”
2 He is blind, and cannot see to bite.
3. Even if he could see to bite, it
would be utterly impossible for him to
go out of the wav to do so, on account
of his severe lameness.
4. Granting his eyes and legs to be
good, he has bo teeth.
5. My dog died six weeks since.
6. 1 never had a dog.
rsr “What do you come here af
ter ?” enquired Miss Susan Nipper of a
bachelor friend, who made her a call
when the rest of the people bad gone
out
*” “j C ome to borrow some matches,” he
meekly replied.
“Matches ! That’s a likely story.—
Why don’t you make a match ? I know
what you came for,” exclaimed the de
lighted Miss as she crowded the old
bachelor into a corner : “you came to
kiss and hug me almost to death, but
you shan’t—without you are the strong
est, and every body knows you are.”

fore George L Brown, our American
landscape painter, bad reached the
acute ui* nU m h tht -/'•-»»’ oiirnr ,»f
the modern school, he opened a studio
in Worcester as a portrait painter, and
met with many instances similar to the
above. Od one occasion, he was called
Upon to paint a family gn.up’for a far
mer of the vicinity, who was a choir
singer of some note in bis neighborhood,
and who insisted upon being -trimsfer
red to canvas with bis rnouili open and
a note hook in his hand. His better
half was about as artistic in her tastes,-
and us happy in her illustrations She
’Wrought out all her jewelry, which she,
wished’to have representeJ, to let her
•children know, if they ever ‘‘got a baek
set," that time was when their folks hud
•somethin’ to brag on. In addition Krt
this,'she wished to be represented with
a knife in one band and a p ate of ap
ples in the other ; of which fruit, as she
was careful to announce, she was “un
cotnrnou fond ” The grandmother, who
was fond of her knitting work, —as what
.grandmother is not, bless their dear
aouki ? —had better taste than the oth
ers, and decided to be looked apon by
future generations with knitting-needles
in her hand. To cap the climax, the
.grandfather, who§e eyesight -was defec
tive and who wore huge green goggles,
wished the artist to paint him first with
blue eyes, “like my da te’rs, and then
put on thei-pecs.” This was too much
for the hightonod young artist; he ex
ecuted the order sullenly, was careful,
not to put his mime or even initials in
the corners, end never could be persua
•ded to puint another portrait.
Count a r Girls. —The farmers’ daugh
ters are soon to be the life as well as the
pride of this country —u glorious race
of women which no other land can show.
I seek not to flatter them ; for before
they can become this, they will have to
make an effort of'one or two kinds.—
There are some who depreciate -their'
condition, they demand more -considera
tion limn they merit. A want of intel
ligence upon all the subjects of the day
and of a refined education is not excus
able in a country girl, iu these days of
many books and -newspapers.
Many girls’uie 'discouraged because
tiny cannot be srint away from home to
boarding schools; but tnen of superior
wind and knowledge of this world,
would rather have for wives women
well and properly educated at home.—
Anti tins education can be-bad whenev
er tbe desire is not wanting. A tasfco
for reading does wonders; and an earn
est thirst alter knowledge is almost cer
tain to attain a sweet draught from the
Pierian Spring, 'there is a farmer’s
daughter in ttiis very room in which I
am writing—a beautiful, refined and
intelligent woman—in whose girlhood
books were not so plenty as now, and
who-obtained her education under diffi
culties that would have discouraged any
but oue who had a true love lor study.
There is no greator blessing for
a man than to have acquired that heal*
thy and happy instinct which leads him
to take delight iu his wor k for his work’s
sake; not slurring it over, not thinking
how soon it will be done and got rid of,
not troubling himself greatly a trout
what men say of it when it is done, but
by putting his whole heart ahd miud
into it, feeling that he is master of it,'
feeling the thing that he has turned
out, be it a legal argument, or a book,
or a picture, or anything else, is con
scientiously perfected to the best of his
power.
“Dear me,” exclaimed Stiggins,
“that new surgeon gave Squantum’s
boy anew lip from the child's own
cheek ! What a painful operation it
must have been 1” “I’ve had a pair of
lips taken from my cheek more than
once,” replied Mrs. Stiggins, “and it
wasn’t a painful operation at all.”
