That woman lives to sanctify,
To grace and to endear.

By mingling in the fray,

To win her own sweet way ;

A Contented Farmer.
One® upon a time, Frederick, King
or Prussia, suiriarned ‘O and Fritz,’ took a
ride and espied an old farmer plough
ing his acre by the wayside, cheerily
singing his melody.
‘You must be wfiil off, old man,’ said
the King. ‘Does this acre belong to
you, on which you so industriously la
bor V
‘No, sir,’ replied the farmer, who
knew oot that it was the King ; ‘I tint
not so rich as that; I plough for vva
ges ’
‘flow much do you get a day ?’ #6ked
the King. . :/
‘Eight groschen,’ (about twenty
cents,) said the farmer.
‘This is not much,’ replied the King ;
‘can you get along with this?’
'Get along, nnd huVe something left.’
‘How is that ?’
The farmer smiled and said :
‘ Well, if I must tell you, two gros.
chen are for myself and wife ; two 1
pay my old debts; two I lend away,
and two I give away for the Lord’s
sake.’
‘This is a mystery which I cannot
solve,’ replied the King.
‘Then 1 will solve it for you,’ said the
farmer.
‘I have two old parents at home who
kept me when I was weak and needed
help; and Dow that they are weak and
need help, 1 beep them. This is my
debt toward which 1 pay two groschen
a day. The third pair of groschen,
which I lend away, 1 spend for my chil
dren, that they may receive Christian
instruction. This will come handy to
me and my wife when we get old.—
With the last two groschen I maintain
two Nick sisters, whom I would not be
compelled to keep; this I give for the
Lord’s sake.’
The King, well pleased with his nn>
swer, said : ‘Bravely spoken, old man.
Now I will also give you something to
guess. Have you ever seen me before ?’
‘Never,’ said the farmer.
‘ln less than five minutes you shall
see me fifty times, and carry in your
pocket fifty of my likenesses.’
‘This is a riddle which I cannot un
ravel,’ said the farmer.
‘Then I will do it for you,* replied the
King.
Thrusting his hand into his pocket,
and counting him fifty brar. new gold
pieces into his baud, stfimped with hia
royal likeness, tie said to the astonished
fanner, who knew not what was coin
big :
‘The coin is genuine, for it also comes
from our Lord God, and I am his pay
master. I hid you adieu.’— Ger.nan Re

Thk Senate Under a Cunjp. — The
Washington correspondent of the Balti
more Gazette, describing the crowd
which filled the galleries of the Senate
on Wednesday, when it was expected
that Revels would deliver the speech
which had been concocted for him by
Bullock and others, says :
“The charcoal anfl milk-and-molasses
colored individuals rather predominated,
and produced in the public gallery near
ly a total eclipse. Some likened the
scene to a flock of crows devastating a
corn field. In the ladies’ gallery there
was much more color and brilliancy.—
Scarlet of shawl, or of sack, and rain
bow-hued ribbons, set off faces of ebony
aud of saffron, as well as those in which
mingled the tints of the lily and the ro
ses. As the moments slipped bv, and
the morning hour n3ared its expiration,
the crowd increased and grew blacker
and blacker, untl night seemed to have
descended in the corners of the galleries,
and the mass of black faces obscured i.l
outlines and merged into a dusky sea of
humanity.”
The same writer stys Bullock was
uWited with Revels several hours on
the previous night.
Sunken Lake, in the Cascade
Mountains, is one of the greatest cari
osities in Oregon. It is ten by twenty
miles, and seems like a gigantic well
scooped out in the heart of the moun
tain. The walls are nearly perpendu u
lar, averaging 2000 feet in height and
rua sheer into the water, leaving no
beach at all. The lake is never ruffled
by the wind, and its depth is unknown,
as thus far no person has been upon its
surface.
WS* A Young lady contemplating
matrimony was one morning handed fe

‘He who giveth in marriage doeth

She immediately returned it with the
following reply written underneath
‘Dear father, I am content to do well;
let those do better who can.'
*@- ‘Now, my little boys and girls,’
said a teacher, ‘I want you to be veiy
quiet,-—so quiet that you can hear a pin

In a minute all was silent; when a
little boy shrieked, ‘Let her drop !’

that it is a more relia

fectual remedy than any other-. Those who have
tried it, kuow that Reared them; those who have
not. know that it cures theirneighbors and friends;
aud all know that what it does once it does al
ways that it never fails through any fault or neg
glet-t of iti composition. We have thousands upon
tnousands of certificates of their remarkable cures
of the following complaints, but such cures are
known in every neighborhood, and wo need not
fmblish them. Adapted to all ages and conditions
n all climates; containing neither calomel norany
deleterious drag, they may be taken with safety
by anybody. Their sugar-coating preserves them
ever fresh, and makes them pleasant to take, while
being purely vegetable, no harm can arise from
their use in any quantity.
Thoy operate by their powerful influence on the
internal viscera to purity the blood and stimulate
it into healthy action —remove the o list motions
of the stomach, bowels, liver, and other organs of
the body, restoring their irregular action to health,
and by correcting, wherever they exist, such de
rangements as are the first origin of disease.
Minute directions are given in the wrapper on
the box, for the following complaints, which these
l‘ilie rapidly cure:
yorl),miiF|Mlu or Indigestion, Listless*
ness, Languor and Loss of Appetite, they
should be taken moderately to stimulate the stom
ach, and restore its healthy tone and action.
For Liver Complaint and its various symp
toms, Hilton* Headache, Sick Head*
ache, Jaundice or ttnisa Sickness, Oil.
lons Colic and Uilious Fevers, they should
be judiciously taken for each case, to correct the
diseased action or remove the obstructions which
cause it.
for Dysentery or Diarrhoea, but one
mild dose is generally required.
For nheniMdtWia, fciout, Gravel, Pal*
Sltation of the Heart, Pain in tlto
Isle, Dack aud Loins, thoy should be contin
uously taken, as required, to change the diseased
action of the system. With such change those
complaints disappear.
For Dropsy and Dropsical Swellings
they should be taken In large and frequent doses
to produce the effect of a drastic purge.
tor Suppression a large do'e shonld be
taken as it produces the desired effect by sym
pathy.
Asa Dinner Pill, take one or two rule to
promote digestion and relieve the stomach.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach nnd
bowels into healthy action, restores the appetite,
and invigorates the system. Hence it is often ad
vantageous where no serious derangement exists.
One who feels tolerably well, often finds that a
dose of theso Pills makes him feel decidedly bet
ter, from their eleansiug and renovating effect on
the digestive apparatus.
