Mr. H. S. Parks, conceived the idea
that the barrels might be put t'» another

he took one of his barrels to a cotton

greatly lessened, the cotton being tight
ly encased in wooden packages. The
cost will be less than bagging and ties.

A Horrible Murder.
A correspondent of the N. Y Sun,
writing urtder deie <rf April 12th, from
Maryville, in E*al Tennessee, gives the
following particulars of a most brutal
murder near that pTafte :
A terrible tragedy was enacted on
Thursday of last week, in one of the up
pdr districts <>f Sever county. A poor
-widow woman of the name of Stratton
had been to Knoxville to receive pension
money to tire amount of eighty-five dol
lars. On her return she sought and ob
tained lodging on that Thursday even
ing at the house of one >oe Burkhi.nl.
in the border of one of the mountain
settlements.
Being much worn with the long jour
n»y pet formed on foot, the woman re
tired at an early hour, occupying a bed
with Burknurd’s wife. The man him
nelf went oat nnmediately after supper,
aed did not return until the hour at
which tire women were going to bed —-
He sut beside the fire a short time, and
then tinkered about the room a few min
utes, and finally departed the second
tito \
Some time in the night Mrs. Stratton
awoke from an unpleasant dream. She
was greatly disturbed in mind, aftd evi
dently apprehensive of danger. She
tried to e-aliii her agitated thoughts and
sleep again, but found it im}»o*aible. —
'Hie oppressive sense of peril became
intensified. The room was silent and
utterly dark; yet the woman fancied
she heard sounds without that boded
no good. The money In her pusseSatbn
was no com forte t then.
Finally, unable to endure this state of
> sfittpence longer, she awakened Mrs
Bnrkhard and begged to lie permitted
la occupy the Iwtck side of the bed,Sav*.
iiig she was af aid to lie in fiont, Mrs.
B. evidently consider Mg this a freak of
Handily, at once changed places with
the woman, and in a shoit time Was
asleep again.
Not so the other, however. Weary
as she was, she cohld not tfhjep fjor drive
fear from her mind. An hour passed vfi
usual silence. Finally a movement was
heard without. The mufflil tread ol
feet sounded before the house The door
was softly pushed open, and two human
figiues stetdlh ly entered the apmtrnent.
Noiselessly they crossed the puncheon
■ft »br, and approached the bedside where
the two women were lying Mute and
breathle-s with terror* Mrs. S. saw one
of the ruffians lay Ins hand <in the face
of her Httcon'eoiuhs eumpahion, while
with the other hand he drew a long
knife across her throat. She distinctly
heard the low hissing sound made by
the keen blade as it cut its way through
the yielding flesh ; then the dud grating
as it crossed the bone, and felt the warm
blood of the victim as it spurted across
the bed and fell up n her time.
Overcome with the horror of tttia
bloody an ent*, enacted by her very side
in the inidsi of s leiice and darkness, the
fear of a similar fate paralyzed thepo r
woman, ami she thought she was tiding.
Daring not to move or make' a sound,
yet scarcely able to control herself, she
lay with closed eyes, and wildly beating
heart, helplessly awaiting the termination
of the fearful druma.
The murderers laid hold of the 1 feless
body of Mrs. B , believing it of course
to bo that of the stranger, and dragged
.t on to the floor, and thence out into
yard, n<» doubt to search for the money
wiiiob Bnrkhard knew Mrs, $, carried
in her bosom.
The latter, the moment she rhw them
disappear through the open door, sprang
t.om the bnl, in the hope of making her
escape. She well knew that as soon as
the assassins discovered the mistake
they had made, they would destroy her
without mercy, the miserable cabin

fireplace.. Il was built of timber,
lined with mud,' and outside extended
up, perhaps, a foot above the level of
the mantel log.
ThnKigh tins broad opening Mrs.'S,
saw the light shining from without, and
there sue sought an exit. Plunging
through the hot ashes and buried coals,
with feet unclothed, she clambered over
the low wall of the tire place, and find
toward the neatest house, a hull' mile
distant. 4
The ad arm was given, and in a re
markable short space of time a small
company of citizens assembled and pro
ceeded to the scene of the murder
Tiny happily reached the place in time
to surprise and Capture Bin kfiard, who
was engaged in packing tip a few artfr
des of clothing, preparatory to flight.
His daughter, a girl of seventeen years,
was assisting him in this operation.
'Hid hardened wretch manifested very
little, if any, concern for what had train*-
piied, and seemed only to regret the
failure ot his original design. His ac
complice had escaped, but every effort
is being made to secure his arrest.—
The unhappy victim of this revolting
crime was found partially secreted lie
side the corn-crib, some distance fruin
the rear of the houv.
