the fire, the widow divid and them equally,
ypid they promised themselves a feast.
■: ‘ J ust then came a knock at the door.
“Do you go, Lucy, ’’said Rhoda, thw

apples out of my lap. I wonder what
people always coiue for when you don't
wont them !'
Lucy put her apple# out of her lap
on the table, and opened the door
There was a tiny old woman. Very wiih
eted aod brown, in a brown cloak and
hood.
* Rest yon and save yon, ’’ said the old
woman. ‘Let a poor creature in that is
almost frozen to death.’
Lucy opened the door wide, and the
old woman hobbled in and sat clo-'o in
Lucy’s chair, warming her hands by
the firo. And seeing Lilly’s apples on
the table; she said.—
“That is just what, I want,” said sh>*.
“1 have not tasted on apple ties year.”
And, pulling the table toward her, she
begyi to cat.
“ What impudence I” said Widow
Nancy and Rhoda.
“ Hush !” said Lucy She is almost
■tnrved She can have tltrm.”
Just then came a second knock.
“ Oh,” said the old woman, “it mii't
be one of my little’ family. The poor
children nre almost starved.”
Lucy hurried to open the door ; and,
without a word, another little old woman
iartod in, but Very much smaller than
the first.
“Come here, chilJi” said the first old
woman, “here is a fire, and some nice
r#d apples.”
Sir there »at the two by the fire,
munching and crunching at Lucy’s
Bpplf*.
, “ It is not very pleasant,” said Lucy,
lo herself, “but they looked nearly
utarved, and I can spare them the app
lies.”
At that moment she heard a third rap.
The old woman said precisely the same
thing as before; and b.fort* Lucy could
jrct ic door fairly open, a third little
old woman jumped in, still smaller than
tint other two.
“Cow# here, mother's darling baby,”
laid th« first old woman, tak ng the new
comer in her lap
So there they all sat, one little old
roman holding another tiny little old
woman, and a second one beside her,
fating at Lucy's nice red apples, ti I
there was not one left. As soon .is the
ipples wore gone. ih.*y fl.'l got up and
riarctied out, without spying a word,
caving poor Lucy storing.
“Well, you’r the queen of funis,” said
iof mother ; “and to punish you for yoi.r

“And yon shall have none of mine,’'
helmed her sister, Rlioda. “You ure too
silly.”
“She will not need your apples,’’said
Ihe first old woman, who had come hack
ifter her staff, “or be sorry for her kind
ness of heart. After this, whenever she
combs her hair, sho shad comb sunbeams
rom it.”
“ Likely strange,” said Widow Nancy;
“and even if it decs happen, l can’t see
what good it will do her ”
The next motirng, however, as she
began to comb and brush lnr long hair,
t was full of light; and ns she brushed,
all the room and the cottage was lull of
ho warm, lovely light.
"I should not like to be rent from
other people,” said Rlmda. “If I were

So one day, there came riding up a

Then 6he said to the messenger.,—

On hearing that Lucy went with the

And presently a light showed on the

Hair Vigor,
For restoring Gray Hair to
its natural Vitality and Color,
tis at once agreeable,
healthy, and effectual
for preserving the
hair. Faded or gray
hair is so<m restored
to its original color ,
with the gloss and
ened, falling hair cheeked, and bald
ness often, though not always, cured
by its use. No’hing can restore the
hair where the follicles are destroyed,
or the glands atrophied and decayed.
But such as remain can be saved for
usefulness by this application. Instead
of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi
ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. Fire
from those deleterious substances which
make some preparations dangerous, and
injurious to the hair, the Vigor can
only benefit but not ham it. If wanted
merely for a
HAIR DRESSING,
nothing else can be found so desirable.
Containing neither oil nor dye, it does
not soil white cambric, and yet lasts -
fcmg on the hair, giving it a rich, glossy
lustre and a grateful perfume.
