Z9b Harding’s Haraa Trade-
Yankees are proverbial f>r •cutr-m-a*,
and it is generally conceded that where
a Yankee tails to make the beat <»f a
bargain, genus of (dher nationalities had
better take back seats,; yet there are
cases on record where Mr. .Innaikan
baa been known to come out second
best. Speaking of this i-xschliuy pba**e
in Yankee character, remolds rite -fa

went into, accompanied with an envia

that the “man wasn’t born who could

A short distance out of Nashua,
there lived a biped of Teutonic descent
who worked a beetle drunk ga tuns,’ us
ho expressed it. Hi* name sun Uaiis
Gerweichtormeiude. By steady appli
cation to his ‘dmck ganeii',’ and a lib
eral display of economy and prudence,
Hans had managed to scrape togcthei
a considerable sum of money, sufficient
to permit him to indulge in speculation
occasionally.
Nov/ it so happened that among the
members of Hun’s household, was t»
daughter, as buxom a lass us could tie
found for miles around, having been
•*born, raised, and had her schooling’ in,
around, an I about Nashua. She lei
naturally enough, attracted the ntteii
timi of the young gents of the city.—
Whether ; t was Mary, or HanV money,
that had the greatest claims, 1 cannot
say; yet Joe Davis, a handsome, rich,
talented young geiilleniui of leisure,
discovered at Hans’ ho iso,
Jtfrd might be always found there w.mn
ho was not at the ln>toi in the ei y.
Now Joe was a wag. Hans was a
wag, and Murgy was lull ol fun en nigh

core ct. &o Joe-, tnse bright tu-.ri.ing,

of the same day returned and brought
with hitn a splendid black horse 4 it be

to a livery stable without being seen by
any of his acquaintance*
'flu* next morning he hitched the new
black horse to a showy buggy, ami star
fed -out for a drive, taking the route past
Zeb’s. is ho drew near the house ho
«aw his victim leaning against the gale,
post, smoking as ieisur. lv as if ho did
not care whether the world moved on,
stood still, or reversed its court*. Hu
no sooner saw Joe, though, tiian lie
mentally exclaimed, —
*1 do declare I that’s .1 nice stepper !
What a nice team two of them would
fellows would make !’
And as Joe came up Zeb accosted
biro with, —
'Oood-morn'n,’Joe; nice hose that!’
Joe, with an air ol noncha'aice, gently
inclined his head forward, as much us
to say, ‘Yes, I think so.’
•‘Where’ll thunder d’ve get that boss,
Joe V
Joe replied that be got him down at
MoGinis’ stables.
‘Wonder if Mack wants to sell that
boss ?’ said Zeb.
‘Guess so,' answered Joe.
‘Dy’o know what he asks for him ?’
interrogated Zeb.
‘Three hundred and fifty dollar- 1 , Ibe

you jump in ai.d see bun move.’
Zeb, nothing loth, mounted the car*

city to tha stable, where after a llmr.

And thus Joe left him, and. returning
to the stable, saddled the hoi so, ami
taking a short cut ‘across lots,’ soon ai

ter instructing Hans bow to dispose 0!

take in exchange for the horse u note
for four hundred dollars, which be had

l*y a man who hail n’t a dollar at his

not worth the paper it was written on
McGinis know ±his, and, of course, re*
fused to trade, but told Z*b that he
could have the horse lor three hundred

Zeb, seeing no chance f->i u tra«i« ex

off, and started for home. Now, in ol
der to get home, it was necessary that
he should pass directly by Hans’ house,
where be seon arrived, and seeing u
horse in the door yard, ho .thought he
would look at him. How his < y«s did
stick out as he examined that hoise !
What a match for McGinis’ black one !
And while thus ruminating, Hans ap
preached and said, —
‘Good obening, Mishter Ilarting.’

and his chagrin can bitter be ’imagined
than described when he learned the
facts, nor was tbe same lessened when
Hans, a f-w days later, dem ind**«l the

had it to pay.
I need not add, to make the story
complete, that Joe, -m the course of time,
