Teukibus Conflagration. —lt becomes our
melancholy duty to chronicle the ptuticulars ol
the most di aetrous fire which has ocemred in
our city for mauy years past.
On Tuesday night, at about 3, P. M.. just when
a'l animated nature was wrapped in the deipest
repose, the dreaded alarm broke upon the Bt.ll
ness of the hour, ssebdiug a thrill of apprehension
to every heart. *
In an instant the bright light which, radiating
from the public square, cast its lord glare upon
the entire city, revealed 100 clearly the nature
anj extent of the calamity.
The crowded block of buildings lying east of
t he Court House, W isin flames, aud all of the
usines- portion of the city in m uiu'.it danger
Brief indeed wis the interval which elapse*!,
ere the cl ink of the engin •, and the cheers of
‘our gallant boys iu red, weie beard Upon the
Iftie. Our citizens turned out rapidly en mass

gether to stay the devouring element.
A sufficed to gho.v that the whb’e
blojk was irretreivably lost, and every eff ,rt
must be directed to arrest tbe pro ress of the
flames at either end.
. On the North side was situated the large two
story wooden biiild''ng owned by H. li. Jones,
which was occupied below as a store, and above
as a printing office. This was separated from
the burning mass by a street only 25 feet in
width.
In that narrow lane, Mr. Lehman, the brake
foreman of the Company, took his slat'd, and
directed a powerful stream of water upon the
imperilled premises. Nothing save the most
Spartan fortitude aud herdism, could have Enabled
this devoted mail to maintain his position so long,
amid the crackling flairtos and intedse heat, which
threatened destruction to all within tbeir re.idi.
Aud rigid nobly and bravely did bur amatitor
firemen rally at the command of their leader,
aud face danger in evejy form. The fat pitch
from the reeking walls oozed lortti in large drops
Under tbe tremeudous heat, and the water falling
upon the smoking surface, sizz-il and hissed as
though coming in contact with molten iron.
Nor were the by-slanders idle. Ladders were
rented upon the adjacent buildings, relays of
water Carrie** established to each well a nd pump*
and the engine pressed to its utmost capacity.
A slight shift ami increase in t&e wind placed
Mr. Gunn’s immense establishment in danger,
and the firemen were then forced to draw off and
play upon his store. Nor did they arrive a mo
ment too soon, as tbe forked fi * rn\s reached ven

it was impossible to face stock a heat. Then
were buck -ts of water dashed upon those who
guided the hose, and a rampart of wet blankets
improvised, to screen in some measure the devo
ted firemen from the blistering flames.
Several times the the Wooden portion of Mr.
Gunn’s store caught, ami blazed fiercely, in close
proximty to large slopes of lard aud uacoo, aud
lie and many others believed all hope of saving
the structure wa3 over.

as almost all of its capital must have perished
in the flames, which no power could have aVrest
ed. But agaiu did our gallant firemen and stal
wart, cfihned friends come t > the rescue, and by
Herculean efforts, the fire was stopped at this
point, with but s.igltt damage to Mr. Gunn’s
premises.
Io the meantime, however, nn explosion of
gunpowder from one of the burning houses, had
hurled a mass flame direct upon the roof of
the Apceai, offline, situated as before stated, iu
the Jones building.
In an instant the shingles were on fire, and
the flam s, which had again encroached in that
quarter, communicated with the store owned by
Jacob Darts, and fiercely consumed the palings to
the garden of Jones’store.
It Was at thiftCritical juncture that the wh!l>

The alarm was promptly given, a hole cut iu
the roof of the printing bfflie, A doz mi sturdy
hau ls mounted the roofs of both buildings, and
being Well supplied with waiter from below, in a
very few minutes the danger was over, and the
fire extinguished. s
A section of firem n bgain came to tbo fescue '
also, and pound a rivulet of W*ter oYer tire
smoking a ret.
Thus terminated this disaster, which lias car
ried sadness and invock to many hearts and
homes.
To our noble firemen, and faithful colored
friends, does the City owe its preservation. The
latter have shown tliem-elves brave, zealous and
reliable. We are happy to state, in this connec
tion that active steps are on foot for the forma
ti m of a colored hook and ladder comp oiy.
Nearly one hundred names U ive already been
i nrolled for tli it purpose.
What citizen will now dare avouch that he is
opposed to the fire organization, and unwilling
lo be (axed for its support? Such men should
be treated as General Jackson did the French
m in at New Crh ans, who applied for a guard lor
Hf cotton. “Take this musket,’’ said tl e old
hes-o. ' and defend your own prop- rty. So when
the alarm of fire isTaised, let these worthies be
chained to the engine, and made to pump for deal
life for the public benefit.

Sad Homicide.— - It gives us real sorrow to re- j

It appears tf.at some altercation occurred fit

The elder Freeman interfered in behalf of the

proved fatal in a few hours. Freeman was
promptly arrested by the Sheriff, and after a pre
liminary examination before the Mayor, held to
bail in the sum ot SoOJ OJ, to appeal 1 and staud
his trial before tbe Superior Court.
The deceased was a man of excellent charac
ter and bad worked like a hero at the late fil e.
His death cast a gloom over the community,
and every effort was made to convince our Col
ored citizens that they have the strictest
justice throughout this unfortunate affair, and
tbftt theft services at the fife had beeu highly
appreciated.
Daniel Taylor was burried on Wednesday af
ternoon. and the Fire Company turned out in
uniform, and marched in’procession to the grave,
accompanied by a large number of our citiletft.
This was a meet testimonial to the services aud
worth of the deceased, and will do much to as
sure our colored brethren that the respectable
portion of the whites are indeed their friends,
and willing to accord them all the respect to
which they may lie entitled.
