A Body and Mind Disease. —Such is dys
pepsia. The stomach and the brain are too
iutim*t«ly allied for the one to suffer without
tile other, so that dyspepsia and despondency
are inseparable. It may be added, too, llmt
irritation of the stomach is almost invariably
accompanied by irritation of the temper.
The Invigorating and tranquillizing opera
tion of Hostetler’s Bitters is most powerfully
developed in cases of indigestion. The first
effect of this agreeable touic is comforting and
encouraging. A mild glow pervades the sys
tem, tlie chronic uneasiness in the region of
the stomach is lessened, and the nervous rest,
lessness which characterizes the disease is
abated. This improvement is not transient.—
It is not succeeded by the return of the old
symptoms with superadded force, at is alwavs
the case when uumedicated stimulants are
given for the complaint Each dose seems to
Jtppart a permanent, accession of healthful in
vigoration. But this is not all. Tlte aperient

are scarcely secondary in importance to its

the secretion is soon brought withiu proper

surface which is particularly desirable at this
season when sudden spells of raw, uupleasutit

against all diseases is bodily vigor, and this
the great Vegetable Restorative essentially
promotes.
Ordinaries, Attention.— We
Would advise the Ordinaries in the
State to appoint none but eligible
tnen election managers, to hold the
entyiiug election, for we have heard
it Intimated that the Bullock fac
tion' will endeavor to prevent an
election in the oounties where men
t»ro appointed to those positions,
who before the war took an oath to
anppofi the Constitution of the
United States, and afterwards gave
aid to the war. Their plan is to ar
rest such managers as soon as they
have been sworn in, upon the charge
of holding oflice contrary to the
Fourteenth Amendment, and by
other jugglery defeat an election.
Wo see how such .a game can be
played. An election manager is an
officer “ under the State,” and if a
person has taken an Oath as a mem
ber of Congress, or of a State Leg
islature, or as an executive or judi
cial officer, and afterwards t ided in
the war, ho cannot hold such oflice,
and may be arrested by United
States warrant, at any time; for
that provision in the State Consti
tution exempting electors from ar
rest, does not apply to United
States warrants.
Let the Ordinaries be • careful;
to select none but eligible men ;
pnd let these managers who have
been appointed, and who are ineli
gible, promptly resign, and let their
places be filled by none but eligible
wen. —True Georgian.

The past year has sufficiently demonstrated
the utility and necessity of such an organiza
tion. Indeed the gallant “ Watchful ”in its
brief career, lias already covered itself with
glory, ands ived thousands to our citizens.
Albany has just received a steam fire en

protect its property and curtail tbe onerous

salutary measures as are now proposed.

him success and prosperity in all that he un

Cotto:\ continues to rule low, despite
the intelligence from Bombay of a reduced
acreage nndcr cultivation in India. This
may be attributed iu part to the near ap
proach ot the dull Christmas holidays, the
heavy receipts at the ports, and the continu
ation of the war. It is some consolation to
know that as the fivtUiriti in bulk meats has
been heavy a little money will go a good
way in purchasing. IJetter raise your own

With a s ngle exception, destitute of alt
schools for boys. Cuthbert opens an Inviting
field to some popular aud responsible educa
tor of youth.
With proper buildings and a suitable
corps of t.'achers, several hundred pupils
could be gathered without difficulty Jrom
the town and surrounding country.
Our girls are amply provide! for, but the
boys most shamefully neglected.
Aside from the incalculable benefit which
such an institution would confer upon tiie
rising generation, it would greatly augment
the materia l prosperity 6f our city.
It would be premature at this time to en
ter into any particulars, but the public are
assured tbe school will not be controlled or
hampered in any way by sectarian or de
nominational influences.
Col. Charles C. Jones, formerly of
Savannah, delivered a lecture recently be
fore the Long Island Historical Society, up
on the Indian Mounds of Naucoochee Valley,
Georgia.
Many deeply interesting statements were
made, relating to the aborigines, as deduced
from a careful excavation of these mounds.
The presence of copper utensils is especially
remarkable. Col. Jones has collected a ma.
scum of Indian relies aud antiquities of great
extent anil value.
Tbe Brooklyn Eagle contains a sketch of
his lecture.
A Visit to the Baptist Church.— On
Sabbath, it was our prsvllege to listen to a
forcible and interesting discoursj delivered
by the pastor of this cburcb, Rev. Mr. Dan
iel.
His theme was the existence of a Supreme
Being as shown from the light of nature.
Having no notes, it would be unjust to at
tempt any sketch of the argument and re
marks of the speaker. Concise, well chosen,
and to the point, however/they must have
staggered ttie atheist and proved eminently
consoling to the true believer. The mani
fold works of creation, the springing com,
tbe blade, the tar and ripened gtaiu ; man's
mysterious and wonderful organiaatioe, the
testimony of pagan writers, the natural relig
ion of tbe untutored savage, aDd the abso
lute necessity of the case were all drawn up*
on with graphic effect, to prove that a great
“ first cause ” must have preceded, and spo
ken into existence, the world and all upon
its surface.
Mr. Daniel possesses a sweet and power
ful voice, and is a faithful and devoted ser
vant of God. We rejoice L> state that bis
lot will be cast in our midst the ensuing
year.
The Baptist church bds recently under
gone thorough and extensive repairs, aud
several important chauges have been made in
its interior.
An addition to the building, has been con
structed at the north end, which affords a
neat study for the pastor, a dressing apart
ment. and a baptismal fout which is located
directly under the platform upon which the
pulpit is situated. box form of the lat
ter bus been abolished, and a beautiful and
chaste table or altar coustructed, open be
neath, and handsomely carved out of black
walnut.
An arched recess in the rear, and the beau
tiful pannel work froutiug the stage, preseut
a pleasing and striking appearance.
Theeutire plastering ot the house has been
renewed also, and the uusigbtly gallery at
the end taken away. When the painting
and varnishing have been completed, no
congregation in South-western Georgia will
possess a handsomer or more convenient
house of worship.
We cannot close this notice without a pass
ing tribute also to the music, instrumental
and vocal, which added no little to the in
terest of the exercises.
The choir is large and evidently in good
practice, while a powerful and sweet toned
cabinet organ exquisitely managed, fills the
apartment with sweetest melody.
This church edifice is an honor to our city,
and augurs well for the taste and prosperity
of our Baptist friends.
Doxa. —We askj a careful perusal of the
timely and well considered article of the
writer who thus signs himself.
He is a ripe scholar, and a gentleman of
the highest world and intelligence. This
whole labor question is one which cannot be
evaded, and must soon be regarded as one of
the greatest moment to the South.
Our farms cannot be allowed to be over
run by brambles aud broomsedge because the

As far as heard from, the experiment''

Our freedmen will learn to be more indus
trious and reliable, when others cun be found

A New Court House.— We trust our citi
zens will remember to endorse upon then
tickets at the approaching election the words,
“ New Court House,” as recommended by
the Grand Jury.
The Ordinary will await the decision Os
the question before commencing to repair
the old structure.
Every motive of economy and convenience
demands the erection ol anew edifice, while,
as has been shown in a recent article by lo
cating tbe same at some eligible point on the
square, aud converting the lower story into
stores, the investment might be made a pay
ing one to the county. Remember, it is pro
posed to meet tbe expense of tbe undertaking
by the issue of county bonds at a reasonable
interest, running twenty years.
This will relieve our overburdened tax
payers from any immediate outlay, while the
projected repairs of the old building must be
met by taxation at once.
Let every one vote affirmatively on this
important questfon.
