He who is not lor ns is Against
us—There is no Middle Ground.
It is a matter of exceeding great
regret that a few individuals in
Dougherty county persist in al
loWing'their personal prejudices to
control their judgment on questions
involved in thd approaching Con
gressional election. For personal
they decUre their purpose
not voce fhl nominee of the
party, and some talk their objections
in such a way as actually to benefit
the Radical noi/.inee. They claim
to Ire'lh-mocrats, and to feel deep
interest in the successor that party ;
and yet they are pursuing "a>cofirae
th§t xuust hazard the success of the
most important candidate before
them. We can better afford to
loose Jpalifhe members to the Leg
islature, in tliis District, than the
Congressman. It is in the Nation
al Legislature tliat the battle for the
rescue of our rights and the restor
ation of our liberties is to be fought,
arift It is absolutely criminal in us
to4hil or neglect to exert the ut
most of our strengtli and resources
tojend to Congress one who is in
accord with the party of the Con
stitiftion and the rights of all the
people.
lion. Nelson Tift was the unani
mous choice of .the District Conven
tion, —and there was no packing ov
management to produce that result.
Ther# has been, and there eaa be
nonobjection urged to his political
course since the war. ■ln perfect'
harmony am} Sympathy with his
people, he has stood by them in ev
ery 7 emergency, fought for their in
terests and their honor with all the
vim, energy, ability an<L adroitness
he possesses. This all men must
admit, and even those who so indis
creetly and sb bitterly assail him
cannot gidusay it WiA truth.
What, then, is the duty of Dem
ocrats in this perilous hour? Can
they withhold their support and
feel no personal accusation of dere
-1 iction of duty ? Du they not sec aud
feel and know that not to vote for
the nominee of their party, is in ef
fect, giving aid and comfort to the
Radical candidate ? Are they so
blind,to the vital issues between the
two National parties, and so deaf to
the appeals of an outraged and op
pressed people, that they pan, with
out s remorse of conscience pr dread
of public censure, become the vol
irofary mstruments/for the defeat of
their party ?
Colonel Tift, as the nominee of
thagpemocratio party 7 , isuotUolonel
commission merchant and
bridge proprietor. Ilis private
character and private affairs have
n >thing to do with his public and
Representative character. In the
latter character ho embodies the
character, sentime its, rights and
obligations of the constituency that
invests him -with representative au
thority. Therefore voting for him
for Congress, as the regular and
legitimate nominee of the party, is
voting for tiie party and the princi
ples it espouses, and not to vote for
him is equal to casting one vote for
the opposite party and its principles.
So that, gentlemen who claim to be
Democrats, and refuse to assist their
friends in electing their candidates,
should not overlook the force and'
truth of the old proverb that—“he
who ifc not for us is against us,” and
that there can be no middle ground
in this contest. They might as well
openly embrace radicalism and vote
for Major Whitely, 60 fhr as the ef
fect is concerned, for Democracy 7,
like religion, cannot brook luke
warmness, arid will not hold fellow
ship with those who desert her
standard or stand aloof from her
lines in the hour of danger. —Albany

)jv Harnessing a Horse.
Very few of those who are ac.
cnstomed to use horses from year
to year, perform the operation sci.
entifioally. It is true that many
get a harness on the horse, and it
may fit well, and it may fit like fath
er’s boots on the little boy. It re
quires much more science than many
persons imagine.
I will mention a few material
points important to be secured.—
The collar is the first point of im
jjortance. That huge thing that
will admit a bundle of straw be
tween it and the neck of a horse,
is totally unfit for a horse to work
in. The collar should fit as neatly
and closely to the neck as a pair of
boots to the feet. It will then sel
dom gall the skin if the hames arc
properly made and correctly adjust
ed. The hames should not be too
far apart at the top; this is often
the case. See that the staples
which hold the side strap and traces
a#c not too far up at the lower end?.
It is impossible for a horse to
draw with ease when the traces are
attached near the top of his neck.
It will invariably gall the upper pan
of his neck. Should this be the
case, tajte out the staples and place
them lower in the hames. If the
•back hands are right for a wagoc,
they will be too short for plowing,
and they will be very liable to gall
the hips of the team. Let the hip
straps be prodcrly adjusted, other
wise they will gall parts of the
horse.
While the horses are at the plow,
thero is not that relief in drawing
as when attached to wheels. On
tlite account the necessity of a hu
ness fitting properly is imperative.
TniNos to Remember.— Remem
btr, that our great business in this
world is to prepare to “get well out
of it.”
Remember, that dishonesty never
makes a friend, but that a dishonest
man will no more trust one of his
kind, than an hor.est man will trust
him.
Remember, that “shrouds have
(<v no pockets.”
Roineinber, that you ean say
more against your neighbor by a
6hrugof the shoulders, or a signifi
cant look, than you could say by
words.
—lt is always in our power to
make a friend by smiles; what a
folly, then, to make an enemy by
frowns.
